Despite the limited selection of clip earrings compared to pierced ones, Abby Slutsky has been wearing clip earrings for more than 30 years.
The inspiration for this article came to me because I had pierced ears when I was 13. My mother never had or wanted them, but my grandmother loved her pierced ears and only wanted her granddaughter to have them too. She would always say that she couldn’t leave my mom her earrings when she passed, so she wanted me to have them.
I remember going with my grandmother to get mine pierced, and she bought me my very first pair of gold post earrings. Unfortunately, I had many infections and eventually closed them. Nevertheless, in memory of my grandmother, I wear earrings almost daily.
The sad thing is clip-on earrings are difficult to find because jewelry manufacturers cater to pierced ears. Nevertheless, I have been successful at finding some lovely and comfortable clip earrings. For those of you that are looking for them or want to buy them as a gift for someone, this article is for you.
Pro Tip for Buying Clip Earring
Consider The Possibility of Earring Loss When Determining Your Price Point
I buy costume clip earrings. When I lose an earring, I don’t want to be upset that I lost an expensive piece of jewelry.
Know The Style of Clip That Maximizes Your Comfort
Clip earrings have different backs. A screw back generally allows you to turn the earring screw and adjust it, so it is more or less tight. Despite the convenience of this style, I personally do not find it as comfortable as the hinge style, which usually has a wide back that comfortably fits most slide on cushions. Know what style is comfortable for you before you buy clip earrings online. It also helps to read online reviews as many prior customers will discuss the comfort of the earrings.
Remember, briefly trying on clip earrings at a store does not guarantee that your ears will be comfortable when you are wearing the earrings for hours instead of just a few minutes. Check the store's return policy.
Places to Buy Clip-On Earrings
Marjorie Baer Earrings
If you like classic or modern style earrings Marjorie Baer offers a selection that is outstanding. They offer gold and silver tones of earrings in many styles. You can find large, small, dangling or earrings that hug your ears and stay flat against them. I have found most of their earrings comfortable, and the back clips are flat and wide enough that you can insert pads if you prefer a cushier feel against your ear. I prefer the Slide On Cushion Pads, which slide easily on all the earrings I have that have this style clip. They are not the cheapest cushions out there, but they are comfortable and stay on my earrings well, so they do not fall off or get lost. I have tried other varieties of clip pads that merely stick on to the interior of the clip, and they are not nearly as comfortable or as durable. Since I wear clip earrings all day, these add to my comfort.
Gallery or Museum Shop Clip Earrings
Over the years, I have found that designers want to sell their products and are often willing to customize an earring or change an earring so it becomes a clip on. Woodmere Art Museum in Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania has a lovely selection of clip- on earrings that you can purchase online or in the store. One nice fetaure of this museum store is that the offerings change often. l I have seen clip earrings at other galleries and museums, as well. If you do only see pierced earrings at a museum shop near you, ask the salesperson if they will share the designer’s name or contact them for you. Designers can often convert pierced earrings to clip or create them upon request.
Hands down, for department stores, Nordstrom is my favorite for finding clip-on earrings. In particular, I like the Karine Sultan brand they carry. Most of these earrings feature a wide back clip on style that works well with slide on pads. This brand offers earrings in gold and silver tones. Some earrings have faux gem embellishments. Nordstrom also has Vince Camuto clip-ons, which can be casual or glitzy, depending on the style you choose. The Camuto and Sultan earrings are mid-priced (in the $40.00-$60.00 range). If you are seeking more expensive clip earrings, the store also carries Swarovski and a few other lines that offer earrings upwards of $150.00 a pair.
No matter the reason you choose to wear clip-on earrings or your budget, it is possible to find earrings you like if you know where to look. Happy shopping.
