DIY Facial: Spa Treatment at Home

Coffee Ground Facial

This is possibly my favorite facial scrub. The caffeine in coffee grounds tightens your skin and the olive oil leaves your skin moisturized and glowing. The yogurt will help fight any current or oncoming acne with it's anti-bacterial properties. All three things reduce premature aging skin. I use this scrub once per week for glowing, healthy skin.

  • 4 tbsp coffee grounds (not instant)
  • 1/4 cup Plain Greek Yogurt**
  • 1 tbsp olive oil**

**You can substitute the yogurt with whole milk, and substitute the olive oil with honey or lemon juice.

  1. Mix all ingredients together in a bowl. The result should be a pasty consistency
  2. Apply to face gently, with a circular motion
  3. Cover your entire face, excluding the lips and let sit for 20 minutes
  4. Rinse with warm water and pat facedry

Banana Facial

Until recently, after talking to my beauty guru of a friend, I was unaware of the benefits of bananas on the skin. Bananas have natural ant inflammatory properties and can reduce acne. They are also excellent for softening the skin.

The honey in this recipe will help moisturize your skin and protect it from natural damage like the sun and aging. Plus, it smells sweet and feels fantastic on your face.

  • 1 ripe banana
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 4 tbsp oats

  1. Put all ingredients in a food processor
  2. Blend until you get a smooth texture with a small amount of grit
  3. Apply the mixture to your face, gently scrubbing to exfoliate
  4. Allow mixture to sit for 15 to 20 minutes before rinsing with warm water

Puffy Eye Treatments

Weather your puffy eyes are a result of your diet or from allergies, there are some quick remedies to whip up that can be easily found in your refrigerator.

Cucumbers - Everyone has heard of, or tired, cucumbers to reduce puffy eyes. It works! They contain natural astringents that constrict blood vessels, reducing puffiness. Put a slice of cucumber on each eye and relax for ten minutes. It feels great and is fun to try if you have never done it before. Recruit a few friends and have a spa day at home.

Egg Whites - Believe it or not, egg whites are good for just about everything, from facial scrubs, to nutrition and for puffy eyes. Whip up two egg whites until the are stiff. Apply under your eyes and let sit for five minutes.

Salt - Although eating salty foods can make your eyes, and the rest of your body look puffy, salt and water mixed together can drastically reduce puffiness. Mix one teaspoon of salt with 1/2 quart warm water. Let the salt dissolve, then take a cotton ball, dip it in the mixture and dab under eyes.

Frozen Veggies - If you have a bag of mixed vegetables in your freezer and a towel, you can get rid of those puffy eyes for the day. Wrap the vegetables in a towel and place the towel over your eyes. Let it sit for five to ten minutes and remove. It's refreshing, relaxing and effective.

Treat Yourself at Home

Don't pay hundreds of dollars to go sit at the spa when you can create a soothing environment in your own home. Use these tips to create the spa feel.

Light Some Candles - Dim your lights and light some fresh smelling candles. Natural scents such as Sandalwood or Ocean Breeze are soothing and smell wonderful.

Bring Out the Pillows - Line your living room floor with your biggest, fluffiest and most comfortable pillows. Sitting on plush pillows will help you relax.

Low Relaxing Music - Music that include piano and flutes are very soothing. Be sure they are instrumentals, with no words. You don't need any distractions.

Comfortable Clothing - Do you have comfortable robe? If so, put it on. If not, put on your most comfortable sweat pants and tee shirt. You don't need to feel made up to enjoy yourself at "your spa".

Have Some Champagne - Weather you prefer something cheap, or stuff from the top shelf, pick your poison and enjoy. Remember, this is your day and you are pampering yourself.

Egg White Mask

All you need for this mask is two egg whites. It's simple, yet effective. Simply separate your egg whites into a bowl and apply to a clean face. Rub into face and neck gently. Now, let it dry. It's going to be slightly strange feeling as it will get stiff and sticky. One it has dried rinse off the egg whites with lukewarm water.

Warning! People with naturally dry skin may want to avoid this mask as eggs dry out the skin further. If you do use it, apply a natural moisturizer after the mask.

Eggs are full of protein and nutrients that cleanse, lighten and exfoliate the skin, leaving you with a glowing and gorgeous complexion, and a silky smoothness you can feel.

You can do whatever you like during your spa day. Apply a facial, have some champagne or do whatever makes you happy and stress free. Part of looking beautiful is feeling good and getting plenty of rest and relaxation.

Come up with your own facial recipes. Popular ingredients include honey, eggs, avocados, olive oil, coffee grounds, yogurt, whole milk and lemon.
