Large Size Sweatpants for Tall Men

Finding a Great Pair of Sweatpants for Tall Men

You would think it would be easy to find sweatpants for big and tall men, since basketball is a tall guy's sport, but that's not the case. I've tried both Adidas and Nike sweat pants, and their XXL sweats are designed more for large waists than long legs.

The Ideal Sweatpant

If I had my choice, I'd wear sweats every day. I often do, though for the occasional business meeting where sweats are too casual, I wear jeans. I have a 36-inch waist and a 36-inch inseam. I like my sweat pants to touch the ground, and have a break in the pant leg where it touches my shoe, if I'm wearing running or basketball shoes.

Where to Find It

The problem is, it's hard to find a brick-and-mortar store any more that carries sweats in big and tall sizes.

Fortunately, Lululemon makes excellent tall sweats, available online and in their stores. They are known for their yoga athletic wear, but they have a couple styles of men's sweat pants that are 36 inches long and are amazingly comfortable. The fabric is super-soft, stretchy, and breathes well. The pants have an elastic waistband with a drawstring to tighten them up if needed, though they will easily expand to be comfortable for a large waist.

Since big and tall clothes are hard to find, I am less price-sensitive than I might be. Lululemon men's sweatpants are expensive at around $88 a pair. But at least you know where to go, if you need a really great pair of sweatpants.

Nike and Adidas Aren't Long Enough

Not all manufacturers make pants for people with a 36” waist and 36” inseam. Nike pants, for example, have a 35 ½ inch inseam maximum, in their 3XL size, which is for people with a waist measurement of 47 ½” to 52 ½”. Adidas pants, according to Dick’s Sporting Goods, have a maximum inseam of 34.75” (in their 3XL size, which is for people with a waist measurement of 40-43”). That’s probably why Nike and Adidas pants don’t fit me!

Other Brands of Long Sweatpants

Size charts at online stores that carry multiple brands of “big and tall” pants—Dick’s Sporting Goods, Davis Big and Tall—suggest that several manufacturers, notably Russell and Reebok—have been making sweat pants with a 36-inch inseam and a waist measurement near 36”. Columbia used to sell long sweatpants that got good reviews, but doesn’t seem to be making them now.

Also some store brands—For the Fit, Sears (Canyon Ridge), and Old Navy—look likely to combine a 36-inch inseam with a small-enough waist, though I haven't tried them.

Russell says their pants are “guaranteed to shrink 1+ inches.” Maybe this is a possibility to keep in mind for other brands, though Sears says their house brands are preshrunk.

Fabric for Russell pants is on the thin side, not luxurious in feel. It's hard to tell at a distance what fabrics called "Jersey" or "Fleece" feel like.

I wonder why designers and retail buyers haven't noticed this yet. I know plenty of men 6'4" and taller. Why won't they make hardly any 34", never mind the desired 36 and 38" inseams? Seriously. This is rediculous. Nike customer service told me that I should "take it to alterations". Yeah righ! As if we can find ANY 34", and AS IF their 34" would have even enough fabric for a seamstress or alterations person to be willing to open up the seam! There is NO extra fabric. Hey designers: is this really worth pissing off tall men for? Another 1 cent for a little more material to enable alterations, folks? Hello...anybody out there?

I recently stumbled into Marmot Brand lifestyle clothing. I haven't tried the pants, but the tops have really long sleeves. The XXL fits me in my body (I'm tall, not really fat) and is long enough in the arms. This is my new favorite brand. Just thought I'd share.

Curious what brands other tall people like that fit well.

I know this is old, but you may want to check out Dastockroom as they carry the longer Nike sweatpants. When looking for longer sweats you need to look for the XLT (3XLT or 4XLT). My son is a little over 7 feet and he has ordered 3XLTT from them which is even harder to find.

Just found out that Reebok makes a pretty decent pair at a good price of tall sized sweats.

Thank you for presenting this Hub. For the larger person, it is often difficult to find fashionable and sporting type clothing. I am forwarding this to my friends.

Paul Edmondson (author) from Burlingame, CA on October 08, 2010:

but I don't recommend ordering the pants online. Go into the store and try them on. Some cuts are longer than others.

chrislittleus on October 07, 2010:

I am running out to Lululemon to get a pair right now.

Robin Edmondson from San Francisco on October 07, 2010:

I love the Lululemon clothes for women as well. It's expensive, but the quality is the best!

wow paul you write about everything! how do you become an authority on so many things? do you research just for each post as the fancy takes you or do really just walk around with all this knowledge in your head?

It is always good to read hubs like this especially when I am looking to buy gifts for my friends who are of larger height.

Debra Allen from West By God on October 05, 2010:

Thank you for this hub. My husband is tall and I can't hardly find him the right length pants to wear at a reasonable price. Most time you have to get the length with a wide waist and he doesn't have a wide waist either. Could you possibly put the link for the store you mentioned in your article...please?

I would sew him some, but I don't have the room or the time now. Sewing used to save some money but with the price of material now it is not as thrifty as it used to be. I voted this up and useful.
