Cleanser 101: How Do I Know Which to Choose?

Danielle has been a Licensed Esthetician treating Clients since 2012.

Cleanser: The building block of skin health.

Cleansing is a crucial part of an effective skincare routine regardless of skin type, condition or gender. Without a complete cleansing step, other products are not able to properly perform.

But what does an effective cleanse do? During cleansing dirt, oil, dead skin cells, makeup, mites and bacteria are removed. A truly great cleanser will also begin treating targeted skin conditions.

Knowing your skin is essential to treating it.

Step 1 to choosing your cleanser or cleansers is knowing your Skin.

  1. Determine your skin types. Are you an oily, dry, combination or normal skin type? Where do you fall on the Fitzpatrick Scale? These can be determined by a skin professional or yourself with a little help. (more articles to come on this soon)
  2. Determine your skin conditions. Do you have blackheads, pustules, or cysts? Do you have flaking, dryness, or dehydration? Do you have skins of aging? hyper or hypopigmentation?
  3. Determine your skin goals. Are you wanting a more youthful glow? Are you looking to clear your skin? Do you want to get rid of your hyperpigmentation?
  4. What's your lifestyle like? Are you always in the sun? Pre or post menopausal? Pregnant? Going through medical treatments? Wearing heavy daily makeup?

All of these factors contribute to finding the right cleansing routine. For example, someone who spends all day in the sun would want to limit photosensitive causing actives.

What's next?

If you are a makeup wearer, a double cleanse model is necessary!

Your first cleanse will be a makeup removing cleanser. This is the one of the few times where consistency of product matters. Here an oil-based cleanser will remove makeup, dirt and oil. The oil melts makeup to remove it easier from the skin. (Product recommendation Doctor Eckstein Azulene Oil Cleanser). If you prefer to stay away from oil use whatever your comfortable with that thoroughly removes makeup.( Water based recommendation Glymed Plus Mega-Purifying Cleanser)

Double Cleanse is performed by first cleansing and washing off your makeup removing cleanser then moving on to the second treating cleanser. Double cleansing is only recommended once daily as it can be overstimulating.

Picking your Cleanser: What actives are right for me?

While most cleansers have one of these actives, this list is by no means extensive.

Extra tips to take cleansing to the next level.

Now that you know your skin, and picked your cleansers its time to make sure you have all the tools.

  1. Always wash your hands before cleansing!
  2. Lukewarm to cool water is best for skin health.
  3. Use circular of massaging movements to really clean for 1 minute.
  4. Wash the cleanser off with water not by rubbing a towel over your face.
  5. Pat extra water off with a clean towel but leave some moisture for next steps.
  6. Bask in the glow of your fresh clean skin!

When in doubt contact a professional!
