What is a Chemical Peel?
We have all seen pictures of a Chemical Peel before and after and thought of how nice it would be to improve our over all complexion. Chemical peeling has been used for centuries to improve appearance. There are many different chemicals used these days for a face peel, the most common one is a TCA peel.
Egyptians used a form of chemical peel more than 5,000 years ago by using the acid from milk and fruit for skin conditioning. Cleopatra was known for taking milk baths as a way of undergoing a chemical peel treatment, and maintaining the look and feel of her beautiful skin.
Chemical peels are known to remove excess accumulation of dead skin cells from the top layers of the skin by causing superficial peeling.
Cell renewal factor, or cell turnover rate, is the rate of cell migration from the lowest layer of the skin to the top, slows with age. The average turnover rate for babies is 14 days, teenagers is 25 days, and adults are from 28-45 days, and for those who are over 50 it approximately 42-84 days.
Keeping cell turnover going is one of the goals of skin preservation.
Factors influencing turnover rate are genetics, the natural environment, medical history, lifestyle and personal care.

Deep Peels and Light Peels
The desired Chemical Peel before and after results you are looking for can be achieved if you know what type of peel is best for you. There are different levels of peeling, and depending on how severely damaged your skin is will determine what type of peel a dermatologist will perform for you.
If you are trying to simply refresh your skin, or lighten some brown spots, you may use an at home peeling system.
Deep Peels are administered by physicians and make use of phenol, or glycolic acid of 50% or more, and Jessner's peel (approximately 8 coats.) A Jessner's peel contains lactic acid, salicylic acid, and resorcinol which is an ethanol solvent. This is an extremely deep and very powerful peel.
A TCA is a medium depth peel that takes longer to recover from than a light peel. The skin will go through a tightening, and then the top layer will crack, and peel off. Many professionals suggest using a concentrated gel, such as petroleum jelly to avoid itching. Light peels are administered by an esthetician, or at home with one of the various kits that are on the market today. These are made up of glycolic acid of 30% or less, lactic acid of 30% or less,(usually much less) and enzyme peels, or Jessner's solution of 2 coats. The very lightest peels will not leave your skin looking read or flaky. They will leave your skin looking great immediately after treatment. A light peel that is closer to 30% will leave you will a few days of flaking.
Many women have gotten dramatic results by doing multiple light peels. It is considered safer than using a very intense peel, and there is no long recovery period of staying in the house and avoiding people.
Chemical Peel Results on Spots
Freckles and Acne Scars
Freckles and mild acne scars are greatly improved by chemical peels. To fade freckles and sun spots most patients have a series of peels that gradually improve the appearance of brown spots and uneven pigmentation. The skin heals from the first peel and almost immediately after making a full recovery it is peeled again. This works well because the skin has a chance to heal and the problem areas are more evident and each peel will be more concentrated in the problem zones in future chemical peels.
Another advantage of doing a series of peels is that the recovery time is not as tedious. Some women can wear makeup and look acceptable in a few days, whereas with a deep peel that gets it all done at once. a patient will look quite hideous for several days at least, and will not feel comfortable in public for at least one week, and even then it will require clever coverup makeup.

Peels improve the texture and increase the cell renewal factor, hydration, and intercellular, lipids. Peeling improves the barrier function, moisture retention, and elastin and collagen production. Peels also reduce fine lines, wrinkles, and surface pigmentation. After being treated, skin looks and feels smoother and softer. Peels are used to control skin conditions such as acne, hyperpigmentation, clogged pores, and dry skin.
