Calamansi (Calamondin) for Beautiful Skin
Calamansi (Calamondin) for a Healthier and More Beautiful Skin
I was always carefree when it comes to outward appearances. I used to just take a bath, comb my hair and I was good to go. I remember when my grandmother used to chase me just to ask me to put powder on my face every time I was going out. I have dark skin and here in the Philippines, girls with dark skin were not beautiful, were teased or bullied so I guess she wanted to make sure I always looked good, albeit my color. It is only now that I realize, having dark skin does not matter that much. One other thing I remember was that my grandmother used to lecture me about the good things “calamansi” (local name) or calamondin can do to your skin. Of course I was not listening. She used to tell me about a certain actress whose only beauty regimen was rubbing calamansi on her skin. And she looked good. You could see she was really beautiful with that smooth skin of hers.
I never realized how smooth skin can really make a woman so beautiful until one time I was watching a talk show on television and I saw young actress who one can say is beautiful not because of her face, but because she just is. She was being interviewed about her beauty regimen and how she maintains her really smooth and flawless skin and she said her mother taught her to use calamansi. It was her nightly ritual; rubbing it all over her body especially on face, elbows and knees. This she started when she was eight years old. This prompted me to do some research about the benefits of calamondin/calamansi to our skin.
Citrofortunella microcarpa, the Calamondin or Calamansi, is a fruit tree in the family Rutaceae native to the Philippine Islands and has been dubbed the calamondin, golden lime, panama orange, chinese orange, acid orange, calamonding, or calamandarin in English. It is believed to have originated from China and has spread throughout Southeast Asia, India, Hawaii, the West Indies, Central and North America. The plant is characterized by wing-like appendages on the leaf stalks and white or purplish flowers. Its fruit has either a spongy or leathery rind with a juicy pulp that is divided into sections. It resembles a small, round lime. (Sorry, forgot the source.)
Calamansi has vitamin C which enhances your beauty, by rejuvenating skin from within and thus bringing a glow on your face. That's because vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is key to the production of collagen, a protein that aids in the growth of cells and blood vessels and gives skin its firmness and strength. It is an antioxidant that slows the rate of free-radical damage -- free radicals are unstable molecules that damage collagen and cause skin dryness, fine lines and wrinkles so it helps skin to recover, prevent premature ageing and can protect it from future damage. New research shows that ascorbic acid 2-phosphate, a derivative of vitamin C, not only neutralizes free radicals, but also reverses DNA damage. Research suggests that vitamin C may also reduce sunburn caused by exposure to ultraviolet B radiation and prevent the consequences of long-term sun exposure, which can lead to skin cancer.
One of the natural benefits of calamansi juice is it acts as a natural skin bleaching agent. It is good for treating dark spots or discoloration of the skin, it helps erase scars and other blemishes for a more even tone. In fact some skin whitening soap manufacturers use it as their main ingredient for soap. It is also a popular main ingredient for facial cleansers and toners nowadays.
The extract reduces oiliness in skin, thus clearing up skin problems such as pimples, acne, blackheads and freckles. It also moisturizes and increases skin hydration. The Vitamin C in the juice penetrates the skin so it is more effective than commercial products which can be rubbed off or removed when washing or taking a bath.
Thanks to all these information, I now believe my grandmother. Better late than never! I now make sure my daughter uses it instead of chemically made products which you can buy over the counter. Aside from being cheaper, it is better to use natural ingredients for skin care because of lesser risks of irritation and other harmful side effects. At her age (she is only fourteen), it is best to be safe. She has been using facial wash for her pimples for a long time with no effect, but since she used calamansi, we have seen positive results. Next time I will ask her to rub the juice all over her body thirty minutes before taking a bath especially on her elbows and knees. I will ask her o do this twice or thrice a week. I don’t want to overdo it for fear of over acidity.

Miss Kriza, a friend's daughters rub calamansi on their knees and elbows every night and there's no bad effect. My daughter uses it on her face and so far there's no bad effect. She sometimes asks me to rub her back with. I guess if it does not have a bad effect on the face (facial skin is sensitive) using it for the whole body is safe unless you are really sensitive to citric acid.

Is there any bad effect if I used calamansi on my skin ? Not only in knees , toes . But all of my body ?

Ive been struggling with my stubborn pimples and i came to a resort of using calamansi, my pimples dried and the scars are fading away, with of course continued use or rubbing of calamansi in my face at night, im just trying to be patient because rubbing calamansi in the face is really irritating (so hapdi..hehe) but it is effective truly.

Rinse after 15mins 'coz your skin can burn if you use it overnight. Your pimples will dry, im sure!!!
James on May 31, 2013:
Calamansi completely removes blackheads overnight, I've tried it, and was surprised that it truly works. But as to pimples, using calamansi overnight would just dry and darken the red coloration of the pimple, much like rubbing alcohol.

i havn't used calamansi because every time i used something which others advised me so to get rid of my pimples, i got disappointed and it stresses me a lot. but after some readings i did, i partly believed and try calamansi later at nighttime. i hope i would not get disappointed again:)
