Caduceus History And Associations
The caduceus is a Greek symbol, often thought to be the symbol of medicine, but it actually is a staff that's carried by Hermes. The staff is entwined by two serpents or snakes, sometimes containing wings. The caduceus has been a known symbol since the 5th century BCE, today, it is one of the more unique tattoo designs available. The caduceus is associated to Hermes and Mercury, in return, it symbolizes balance, negotiation, and commerce.
Many people believe the caduceus is the original symbol of medicine, but that is actually the rod of Asclepius. The rod of Asclepius is the symbol for medicine, containing only one serpent entwined on a staff. Today, the caduceus has become a national symbol of practiced medicine and has many associations in medicine.
One myth associates the caduceus with "peace." Greek myths suggest that Hermes came across two fighting snakes and brought peace to them with his caduceus. According to Greek mythology, another myth explains how Hermes stole cattle from his half brother Apollo. Hermes offered Apollo a lyre fashioned from a tortoise shell as payment for the stolen cattle. In return, Apollo gave Hermes a caduceus for his honesty. The caduceus can also be found in the Greek story Tiresias.

Hello Teaches. Thanks for your visit and comment. The caduceus tattoo would be great for medical students, a good medical tattoo. I also like the fact that this medical tattoo design can help others know that you have a medical issue of some type. Thanks again for the comment and your time Teaches, best wishes.

I didn't know this symbol as called caduceus. Very interesting background on this topic. I don't think that I would wear one of these tattoos, but know some medical students that probably would enjoy it.
