Braids have become very popular in recent years. Did you know that hair braiding has been around since 3000 BC? It seems that this ancient hair style originated in ancient Egypt and Africa.

The Egyptians used to wear their hair short on a casual day. On special occasions, however, Egyptians had been known to wear black wigs. The women, not only had long hair wigs, they also had their wigs braided and decorated with ivory and gold.

In Africa, although there are no written history of braids, ancient stone sculptures and engraved images on wood and stone reveal the use of hair braiding by both men and women. In East Africa, the Maasai people reserved hair braiding for young men preparing to undergo the rite of passage to adulthood. Maasai women, more often than not, have their heads shaved clean.

In America, plains Indians, both men and women, wore the recognized long braids adorned with feathers. More artistic braided hairstyles were brought to America and Europe by immigrants from Africa, notably from French-speaking West Africa.

Today, braid hairstyles are popular choices for women of all ages. Fun braids are favorite casual hair styles, specially during summer. Braided updo is very chic and have been very popular among celebrities all year round.
