Blunt Bangs - How to Cut & Style Them

If you're looking for a dramatic hairstyle change, blunt bangs are a great option; bangs can completely transform your face! Blunt bangs work extremely well with round and oval face shapes.

I personally have extremely curly hair. I got blunt bangs a long time ago and could never figure out how to style them and, more importantly, how to keep them straight. I grew out, cut, and grew my bangs out again multiple times, but I continue to pursue the fringe look; I just love it.

Through an excruciating 10 years of trial and error, I have devised a great system for cutting, styling, and maintaining my blunt bangs.

Cutting Your Bangs

The most important thing to remember when cutting your bangs is: less is more. You can always cut more hair off, but you cannot put it back (I've tried). If you have the time and the money, going to a hair stylist is a great option! But as someone who gets a professional haircut twice a year at most, I simply refuse to go get my bangs cut every few weeks. If you're like me, then you should definitely learn how to cut your own bangs. It's actually quite simple.

If you are cutting fresh bangs, keep reading; if you are simply maintaining your current bangs, skip to step 2. Using a comb, cut a line from temple to temple; you can play with the thickness of your fringe. If you are going for a wispy look, you will not need much hair. If you have curly hair, I would definitely suggest a thicker bang; about half an inch of hair. Once you have sectioned off the hair, the fun begins

1. Trim your hair to the tip of your nose

2. Using your index and middle fingers, flatten the hair and twist over once

3. Transfer the hair to the other hand and twist again.

Tip: You will want the hair to be remain relatively flat.

4. Begin trimming your hair in short increments. You want to trim from left to right and right to left to keep the hair even.

Tip: Trim, release, and repeat the process; it may take multiple rounds.

5. Once you have achieved your desired length, repeat steps 2 through 4, but snip upwards to create more dimension.

If you're going for a slightly more edgy look, cut your bangs short!

Styling your bangs is easier than you might think! All you need is a paddle brush, a hair dryer, a hair straightener, hairspray, and, the godsend of bangs, dry shampoo.

As I said before, I have curly hair. You can play with these ideas and decide what works best for you!

You will want to begin with wet hair; not damp hair, wet hair. Using your brush and hair dryer, brush the hair from side to side while directing the hair dryer to down.

There is simply not always time to style your bangs. But, it's a pretty simple fix! I like to gather my bangs, twist them, and pin them to the side; it has a nice retro vibe and puts a fun twist on the classic bump.
