Does this look Familiar?
If this looks familiar you have probably read my hub on Mens Fragrances for daytime. This hub goes over many of the same things, except it will go over how these rules apply to night fragrances. If you already get the idea; you can skip ahead to my top 10 list below.
Best Fragrances for Night
Every guy probably has a fragrance that they wear everyday. That is always a good thing, but it's important to realize that your cologne is part of how you represent yourself. Certain fragrances come off as strange smelling when you are in certain situations. When you go out at night it's important that your fragrance matches the situation. Night fragrances generally have richer, heavier notes that invoke warmth and masculinity.
Where to Start...
To understand which mens fragrances work best for night you need to know what to look for when buying a fragrance. There are certain trends that occur in mens fragrance that will help you determine which fragrances are best for night. These trends occur in the fragrance wheel, the scent accords and in the individual notes of the fragrance.
Using the Fragrance Wheel
In 1983 Micheal Edwards created the fragrance wheel to help people classify fragrance. The fragrance wheel has become one of the most popular ways to classify a fragrance. When looking to buy a fragrance for nightwear you'll want to stay on the right side of the wheel. Oriental and Woodsy scents are best for night.
As you move to the left side of the wheel the scents will become more like a daytime fragrance. When you start smelling a lot of fragrances the differences between a day time fragrance and nighttime fragrance becomes quite obvious.
Best Mens Fragrances of 2011
Check out what I consider to be the best fragrances for men in 2011. Hundreds of colognes were released last year and I narrowed it down to just 10. You won't go wrong with these, you'll love them and so will she.
Mens Fragrance Accords
An accord is a combination of several notes that make an entirely new note. Accords are often times the words you tend to use when trying to describe a fragrance. Most people who smell a fragrance cannot pick out the individual notes, but can pick out the accords quite easily. When shopping for a mens fragrance to wear at night you'll want to look for a fragrance that make you say the following:
Top Notes are what you smell when you sniff right from the bottle. These notes will only last for a short while after you spray your fragrance. Most of the time these notes consist of citrus type scents. In night fragrances, top notes are generally a bit spicier than day fragrances.
Middle notes are what gives each fragrance its individuality. These are the notes that will make you fall in love with a fragrance or make you turn your head in disgust. These notes are more obvious when you spray your fragrance and wait a few moments. A wide variety of notes can be found in the middle notes, but floral and spicy notes are often times found in night fragrances.
These are the notes that ground everything. If you have ever worn a fragrance for several hours and noticed that it smells significantly different than it did when you first put it on, that's because you are smelling the base notes. The base notes are used as a background for all the other notes to sit in front of. The stronger the base notes, the longer your fragrance will last. In Night fragrances the base notes in general play a larger role in the overall fragrance. Since night fragrances depend on the base notes more, they will seem heavier and last longer on your skin.
Which Fragrance Notes Work for Night?
Everyone will have a different opinion on this, because everyone has a different way of interpreting scent. I have tried to pick out some of the more common notes to look for when buying a fragrance for night. I have organized the notes by top, middle and base notes. All fragrances will have a top, middle and base. The top notes are what you smell first and often don't last long. The middle notes are the guts of the fragrance and are what gives the fragrance its uniqueness. The base notes are what holds it all together. I am also a believer in certain notes that fall between the other notes which bridge the other notes together. Bridge notes work as a transition from the various levels of notes and help create a more well-rounded fragrance.

Top 10 Mens Fragrances for Night
Now you understand what makes a good fragrance for night. The next time you go shopping for a fragrance you'll seem like an expert. The person behind the counter might even be a bit intimidated by your knowledge of fragrances. If that isn't the case, you're in luck because I've made a cheat sheet for you. Below are my top 10 night fragrances for men. If you buy one of these you'll be fine.
10: M7 Yves Saint Laurent
M7 was introduced in 2002 and became fairly popular. This is a intense and heavy fragrance that you'll either love or hate. This scent is extremely masculine with its strong, woody, oud note. Right out of the bottle you'll notice hints or rosemary and citrus. If your looking for a masculine fragrance this is a winner.
9: Lui Rochas Rochas
Lui Rochas launched in 2003 with their traditional fragrance. Right off the bat you'll be slammed with notes of cedar followed by some powdery amber notes. This Chypre is a great fragrance for a night out on the town.
8: 1 Million By Paco Rabanne
This fragrance was released in 2008 and has become extremely popular. The first accord you'll smell is the warm, spicy accord made of cinnamon and patchouli. The citrus notes pop in to lift the fragrance and makes it a bit sweeter. If you enjoy warm scents, you'll enjoy 1 Million.
7: Attitude Extreme Giorgio Armani
This is another great masculine scent. Attitude Extreme was released in 2009 by Giorgio Armani. It was meant to be a more intense version of Attitude which was released in 2007. The extreme version of Attitude seems a bit sweeter to me. Overall, this is a very spicy fragrance with hints of coffee to sweeten it up. This is another great fragrance to wear on a night out.
6: Givenchy Play Intense by Givenchy
Givenchy Play Intense was released in September of 2008; maybe you'll remember the Justin Timberlake commercials. Givenchy Play Intense is a very modern perfume with strong notes of coffee and balmy citrus notes. This sweet, warm fragrance is a comforting yet masculine scent.
5: La Nuit de l`Homme by Yves Saint Laurent
La Nuit de l'Homme hit stores in March of 2009, with its blend of warm spicy accords and fresh herbal notes that are perfect for a night out. This is the type of fragrance that's difficult to stop smelling.
4: Roberto Cavalli Black by Roberto Cavalli
In 2006 we were introduced to Roberto Cavalli Black. This fragrance is a bit different than the others on my list with its strong herbal and floral accord. Lavender, cedar and tonka beans dominate the fragrance to create something that is perfect for a night out. The bottle isn't very impressive, but it's worth checking out.
3: Jil Sander Man Absolute Jil Sander
This is a great scent that was released in 2008. This fragrance manages to be warm yet light. It has a strong Oud note blended with leather and lavender. Together it creates a fresh yet spicy accord. This is one of those fragrances that you'll find yourself smelling the bottle over and over again.
2: Dior Homme Intense Dior
Dior Homme was released in 2011, and became very popular. It actually made my list of top 10 fragrances of 2011. Its woody, powdery and floral accords make this a great scent for night. Dior Homme Intense has a strong Iris and Lavender note that sits in front of a woody background of cedar. This is warm and mellow fragrance that is great for any evening.
1: Prada Amber Pour Homme Intense Prada
Prada Amber Pour Homme Intense was released in 2011 and is probably one of the best fragrances released that year. I ranked it number 2 on my list of best fragrances from 2011. This scent appeals to those who enjoy traditional fragrances yet want a modern version of it. Amber Intense has a nice woody accord to it which makes for a warm, soft fragrance. This is basically the definition of a night fragrance if there was one.
Christopher Price from Vermont, USA on January 27, 2012:
Aramis has been my only scent for the past 40 years. It is still the classic aroma that has prompted comments and compliments from women lucky enough to get close enough. Nothing trendy, simply timeless.
Michelle Simtoco from Cebu, Philippines on January 24, 2012:
I love the woody smell in men :D
