Wearing Navaratna Jewelry

Navaratna Jewelry is getting more attention these days because of its stylish looks and astrological benefits. If wearing astrological remedies, one can wear gemstone jewelry based their zodiac or horoscope, or wear a Navaratna or Navagraha jewelry which encompasses nine stones that represent the nine planets.

Navaratna refers to the nine gemstones related to the nine planets used in Vedic astrology. The word "nava" means nine and "ratna" means gem in the Sanskrit language. Navaratnas are considered auspicious and believed to bring good health to whoever wears it. It symbolizes health, prosperity, happiness and peace of mind. Also, it wards off negative energies and effects from planets, while strengthens the positive influences of the gems.

Navaratna ornaments can come in the form of necklaces, rings, bracelets, anklets, pendants, bangles, armlets, and other trinkets. These are all extremely popular.

  • The jewelry can be made with precious gems or semi-precious stones. According to Sri Garuda Purana, when buying navaratnas or any gem really, one has to ensure that the stones being used in the ornament are flawless.
  • It is also advisable to wear the ornament after cleaning and charging with Navagraha mantras. One can wear the jewelry before sunrise or any auspicious day at a temple.
  • To wear the rings the correct way, wear the blue sapphire gem (representing Saturn) pointing towards the body and on the ring finger. Women can wear the ring on the left ring finger while males on the right ring finger.

Hello, everyone,

The right hand is the male one - to give energy. The left hand is the female one - to take energy.

The ring finger is your solar finger that is the Sun place in your zodiac (I'm a Scorpio that's why my Sun is in Scorpio).

As I think you can use any finger for navratna, escpecially to diminish malefic effects of the precise malefic planet in your horoscope. For example, if you've got malefic (debilitated, afflicted) planet of Jupiter then you can wear Navratna on the index finger, according to the localization of the planets on the fingers and their phalanges. Thank you.

Ashley on August 10, 2011:

Hi Anaamika,

I am a regular reader of your blog.

I have a question regarding navaratan ornament. When one wears a navaratan ring, you have mentioned that the correct way to wear is the blue stone facing the body. This way,the emerald-diamond-pearl row would be facing away from the body/will be towards the feet/ground.

When a navaratan pendent is preferred, it is worn in such a way that the emerald-diamond-pearl row would be facing the body and the blue stone row would be facing the ground/ feet.

What could be the reason for this?

Should the ring also be worn in the same fashion as the pendent, with the blue stone row facing the feet or ground?

Please let me know.

Hi Ms. Anamika, This really a wonderful site. I wish to know about the sizes, treatment, color and clarity of the gemstone for navaratna. As I found that it is really difficult to get an unheated clear ruby and untreated clear emerald. Could you please explain a little about the emerald specifically? Thanks a ton.
