My Story of Acne Through My Life
I got complimented on my skin today. It completely took me by surpise because I have never been complimented on my skin. I have been complimented on my eyes, ambition, and style. But, never my skin. Since I was in 7th grade, I have been plagued with those bumps on my face. They take on many forms and go by many names including pimples, zits, boils, spots, breakout, cysts, and my least favorite: acne vulgaris (the name just sounds horrible!).
I have been through many dermatologists, each one striking both my ego and my wallet. It was humiliating sitting in front of each one as they crinkled up their nose studying the one thing I spent 30 minutes that morning trying to hide. They would prescribe it all: antibiotics, face creams, gels, Accutane, and soaps. I dreaded my follow up appointments even worse than my initial appointments. I knew they would be disappointed in my progress and make a snide remark doubting I was following their regimen, which, truthfully, I did.
Then I would be off on my hunt to find a new dermatologist, hoping to find the one that could both help my cause and not make me feel even more insecure about my face than I already was. I never found "The One". Defeated, I resorted to over the counter medicatons, Benzoyl Peroxide, daily masks, and Salicylic Acid. One time I was in such dispair that I bought the Salicylic Acid for wart removal since it was more potent. But, before you try that, it does absolutely not work - well, unless you count a stinging feeling followed by no progress treatment! I tried all of the name brands, the 3-step informercial systems (you know the ones), and store brands. Each would work for a bit then the acne would fight back - and come out in full force.
I was now in my early 20's and completely envied anyone with clear skin. I made a comment at work that I would need to run home and fix my foundation before attending a happy hour. The receptionist was astonished that anyone needed to fix foundation during the day. I had one friend tell me that I always looked like I had foundation caking near my nose (uh, thanks?). I had one very rude colleague deliberately tell me that I had pimples and her boyfriend loved her for her beautiful skin. She was older than me and had no excuse for saying something so hurtful. Goodness, I am 35 now and sadly, those comment still haunt me.
Finally, in my late 20's it stopped. I have no idea if it was a combination of every single treatment throughout my life or the simple fact that I was getting older. I still had small surface ones, but they were the exception rather than the rule. Then, shortly after the age of 30, I switched to Bare Minerals from their fabulous late night commericals.
I loved Bare Minerals. It didn't itch my skin. It felt so light and made me look glorious, even in pictures. I would sometimes mix it with moisturizer or water for an ultra sheer look or just do the "swirl, tap, buff". After a few weeks, I started developing hard knots under my skin. They were deep, painful, had no head, and sometimes would swell up my face. I had never had this type of acne before and I was puzzled. But, I didn't visit another dermatologist. I just dealt with it. I tried new treatments and soaps. It never occurred to me it could be my pure Bare Minerals.
After wearing the makeup and battling cystic acne for for over four years, something made me do some some research. In this, I learned that other women were having bouts of the cystic acne when using mineral makeup. There were two possible culprits: 1) a person could be slightly allergic to the mica and bismuth oxychloride and 2) it is so finely milled and goes in your skin to give its great appearance. While this is a top selling point for those with naturally great skin, it can cause microscopic tears deep inside and clog deep pores with bacteria, causing large, ugly cystic masses for those prone to acne (and I was never gentle about putting it on - I pushed it into my skin).
So, I quit using Bare Minerals.I switched to a cheap drug store brand, Cover Girl Clean, simply because after hours of internet research on foundations, I realized that there was no "perfect" foundation. So, if it's a "crap shoot", why not try the $6 one?
It obviously doesn't go into my skin like the Bare Minerals did, but it doesn't give me cystic acne either. It looks good. The tea tree oil cleared up the rest of the masses beneath my skin's surface and I haven't had any new painful boils, cysts, whatever you would like to call them since I made the switch. The Walgreens Alpha Hydroxy Acid has been fabulous, and honestly, its the best bang for the buck, at keeping my skin soft and eliminating my old dark marks and scars. I will hopefully have a revew on that soon.
I can't say I have thrown my Bare Minerals away, even though I know I should because I'm sure its past its expiration date!! It does have a place in the back of my bathroom cabinet. I feel as if I do owe it some homage. I do wish my skin loved it as much as I did.

thank you so much for your story after going into my local mall I've been dying to try bare minerals I let the girl put some on my face later that night I noticed my face is burned my hands are itchy my face on the side of my face on my eyes were red and look burned, I have contacted bare minerals and they tell me that no one else is ever reported this type of reaction I am thinking about contacting a lawyer and filing a lawsuit if this doesn't go away. I don't usually wear makeup like that but I have tried other foundations and I've never had that type of reaction, I have pictures and I look horrible.

Thank you so much for posting this! I have been crying myself to sleep many nights the past 3 months because of a sudden onset of cystic acne. I started using BM a few months ago but I didn't think it could be the cause. I blamed it on my clairsonic brush. I have now stopped using the BM and it already feels better. Thank you!

I understant that a few people may be sensitive to ingredients such as bismuth oxychloride contained in mineral makeup. I am lucky I have not had any problem using bareMineral, which has actually helped my skin clear up from clogged pores and cysts on my chin. I also wash my brushes (both natural and synthetic) every night so that they are clean and ready to use by morning.

I use Citrus Clear's face wash before applying makeup. It has definitely helped reduce my acne, and leaves my skin refreshed. On occasion I will use Citrus Clear at night after removing makeup, if I wore my makeup for longer than usual. It should work for you too - and it has no harmful chemicals and is super gentle!

I was recommended BM by a college recently and decided to buy it. I have only been using it for just over a month and already my skin is dry anf flaky. I've also come out in little bumps all over my face and my cheeks have become red and itchy. Would not recommend it to anyone

I've been using BE for years and I would have an occassional pimple. Approximately 3 months ago, my face started breaking out in cystic acne along my chin and jawline. I went to a dermatologist and got a prescription cream and medication. I am really glad that I am not the only one although I am confused as to why my skin chose now to break out since I've been using the products for a long time. I am definitely not going to be using it any longer.

Incredible. I can't believe I just stumbled across this hub! I have the same story, obviously, as the rest of the commenters here.....I'd never heard of mineral makeup causing cystic acne, though I suspected that was the culprit! Now I feel more confident about switching to a different foundation than before I read this!

I thought I was the only one. Thank you for writing this post.
I'm not a girl who wears makeup usually. I used to wear makeup years ago, but quit altogether because I had self-esteem issues, and I told myself the best way to fix that is to STOP beauty altogether. No more covering my face up. Well, I am fine now.. I'd say I have fairly good self-esteem much of the time and I feel okay about myself. I went to Vegas on a vacation, and decided I wanted to wear a little makeup. I had bought Bare Minerals previously after all the hype of it being "natural and better for your skin". I put it on my face, for 4 days (I'm not kidding here, I wore it for 4 days), and when I got back home, swore off makeup again for a bit, and looked in the mirror. I looked worse than I ever have before. Big, red, swollen bumps everywhere. I cried.
I thought it was makeup in general, that I could just never wear makeup again to any type of event. Then I realized, when I USED to wear makeup, my Covergirl liquid foundation years ago, I never broke out with acne like that. When I wear heavy duty concealer to cover my bumps, it doesn't make me break out more. It was Bare Minerals.
Never again.. I have learned my lesson. I'm sure it doesn't do this for a lot of people, but if you have acne-prone skin, I do not recommend this. At all.

Hi Ladies; I wish I'd seen your reviews earlier as like most of you I'd started using BM because I believed it was natural and I liked the look and feel on my skin. I bought the medium starter kit and then quickly after bought eye make up remover, deep cleansing wash, eye shadow and a full size Prime Time. I now realise 2 things; I must have more money than sense! and that I must be an "ad man's" dream!!
I had teenage acne (classic T zone) which thankfully I grew out of; since then I've always tried to have a good skincare regime which has paid off over the years as I get th occasional spot but nothing more until about 2 months ago! I'm now in my late forties and thought I'd have a change of look so I booked in for a "Make Under" I was then hooked.
I have then seen a real downward spiral in my skin's condition; red blotchy cheeks, chin and forehead, flaky itchy patches around my mouth and small headless bumps. I realised it was the BM products but thought it was just the skin care range so I took the eye make up remover and face wash back to the shop and got a refund. I'm now going to take back the Prime Time and then chuck out the rest of my BM purchases. I'm in the UK so I've already been to Boots (our Walgreens) where I spoke with a a really helpful assistant who gave me free samples aand lots of help to find products without additives. I will definitely be more causes in the future so thanks for sharing your experiences and GOOD LUCk!

I was always the girl with beautiful skin. And then about 2 1/2 years ago I started using Bare Minerals and my face started getting these cyst that were unreal. Huge, gross and disgusting and would take forever to go away. I never could figure out why they were forming, I wash my face every morning and night since as long as I can remember and could never get them to go away. This makes so much sense to me, there mascara makes my eye lashes fall out! I will never use it again after what is on my chin right now. Im going back to MAC. Thank you for the knowledge, Im stoked to see if it works!

So interesting! Now I'm on the hunt for another foundation, to hide my redness/acne. Any suggestions? I always thought liquid foundation would be worse because it would seep into my pores, but was I ever wrong! I saw an episode on Dr. Oz about the DANGERS of mineral makeup. I should've stopped using it immediately, but I didn't. Now I have tiny bumps all over my face! I don't know what to do about it anymore.

I was just getting ready to order the starter kit... thank God I read this first. I had acne bad when I was younger and have pits and a huge scar on my cheek ( well, when I'm not wearing Dermaflage) ...I thought the BM would be good to use now that the dermaflage makes all the scars go away and gives me perfect skin for the first time in ten years. Wow, thanks to everyone who shared. God bless. Btw, dermaflage really does work and it REALLY does only take a few minutes to put on and it REALLY does last until you take it off.

I cannot even begin to describe how happy I am to have found your story. Like most people, I believed that using BM would improve my skin and NOT make me break out. It did the complete opposite. I'm 20, eat right, drink plenty of water, have a good skin care regimen that I stick to, and have had reasonably clear, smooth skin all my life. About two weeks ago I decided to give in to all the great reviews, infomercials and friends A+ reviews and bought a BM starter kit (Matte Foundation in Fair, Mineral Veil, Warmth all over face colour, Primer, a concealer brush and two other brushes). I didn't really put 2 and 2 together until reading this article. I don't like going out in public recently and that's just not like me. I also have the under-the-skin, headless acne spots... about 4 right now. I refused to believe it was the BM..especially since my sister uses it and swears by it/sleeps in it sometimes (she has acne prone skin as well). I would just re-apply when the makeup failed to conceal as much as they said it should, and now looking back.. I realize that only made it worse! I have tried a lot of things, acne treatment, over the counter treatment gels and creams and even Arbonne facewash/Acne lotion. Nothing worked! I was on the verge of ordering Proactiv, but was hesitant because there is apparently bleach in it. So last night I went to Shoppers Drug Mart and bought Almay Clear Complexion foundation and concealer/treatment gel (2 in 1). I woke up this morning and already the spots have decreased in size! I am so devastated that BM didn't work for me :( I wanted to get away from liquid foundations, but I think I will just go back to using Make Up Forever once this cheap drugstore brand clears me up.
Thank you again for your reassuring post! It made me feel a lot better, and reading the comments made me feel less crazy!

I am so happy to read all of these! I also have been breaking out BAD for the last several months and could not figure out for the life of me why??? I tried everything...keeping my hands clean and not touching my face, washing twice a day, different products, keeping my bed sheets super clean, sleeping with my hair in a ponytail, not spraying purfume near my face, etc. NOTHING worked. I always thought that I was "safe" using BM because it was a "clean" make-up. Apparently I was so wrong. After reading this I feel like I finally have my answer. I bought Cover Girl Clean Make-up tonight and I am going to toss my BM! So happy to move on in my life and get my skin back! Thank you thank you thank you for sharing.

I have a similar story. Never associated the two. Always thought it was a dirty brush, never the makeup itself. Going to the store now to purchase something different. Hoping it works. Thank you for your story. I am so frustrated with my skin that it take me over an hour to do my makeup, just trying to cover everything. I'm in tears now thinking I've been so stupid to neglect this change. Thank you thank you thank you. :::fingers crossed:::

@ Rebekah- I'm in the same boat! I stopped using Bare Minerals about a week ago, and I haven't seen any improvement. Maybe I have fewer breakouts, but it still feels like my skin is being washed with razor blades. I'm hoping that it doesn't take very long for this problem to clear up. My mom does fine on the mineral makeup, too, but it's a killer for my skin. I see you posted 12 days ago, have things changed at all for you?
Rebekah on July 17, 2012:
Thank you so much for this post! I'm like you - I hate to throw out my mineral makeups because I paid so much for them, but this only cements my desire never to put it on my face ever again.
I wonder if all mineral makeups do this?
I started with the Bare Minerals, and loved it to death. I looked so natural! And then I started breaking out horribly, and would have to use more makeup to cover up the spots, and the cycle was just endless. Before I never had serious issues with acne, but I got what I called "cluster zits" around my temples and chin that were painful, red, and never went away no matter what I did.
So I switched to Cleure's bismuth-free brand, and dang it if the same thing didn't happen! Only now, I have these horrible cysts on my face, mostly around my cheeks and mouth, and I am mortified to go out in public without a lot of make-up on - even to the gym! - where once i didn't use it at all unless I was going to work.
It makes me want to sue, for products liability (I work at the court and see people suing for less...)
But my mom doesn't believe it's the mineral makeup because it hasn't given her acne. :\
Thing is, I stopped using all mineral makeups about a week ago and have still not seen any improvement. How long in general does it take? I'm about ready to scrape my skin off with a loofah and exfoliating scrub! Oh, and I have sensitive skin, so tea tree oil burns me and makes me look like a tomato. :( Any other ideas?

Good Morning Ladies, I received my samples of Everyday Minerals so yesterday I decided to give it a try. I requested a sample of the following: Buttered Tan Semi Matte Base, Golden Medium Matte Base, Fairly Light Neutral It Base, Natural Ivory Joboba Base, Dusty Miller Lucent Powder, Snuggle Blush for color and Finishing Dust finishing powder. Yesterday I went with Golden Medium Matte Base, it was a little light but to be fair I have been hitting the beach for a tan the last few days I'm sure it would have been a perfect match before the sun tanned my skin. When applying the make up it seemed a lot lighter and silkier than Bare Minerals (use to wear Golden Medium in BM) I applied it and it didn't cover the scars from the cyst or the new cyst I developed last week but it might be due to the lightness of the color. It did look good on the rest of my face. I applied it around 11am ran around town for a bit and decided to hit the beach, layed out from 2:30-5pm then headed to a local bar for a cold one. When I got there I went for my mirror to touch up and surprisingly I didn't need any touch up. All my make up was still on my face. Although I didn't get in the water completely I did go in up to my waist and for those who've been in a large body of water on a hot bright sunny day should know the sun reflects off the water burning under your chin and face. Well not with this makeup. My face stayed untouched, unlike Bare Minerals that would have ran off in some spots (oily spots). After showering and washing my face I once again went for my mirror and for the first time in a LONG time the redness on my cheeks were gone, I had no itching. This morning the large cyst on my face decreased in size since Friday. I'm so excited I cant wait to try the other samples to see what works best so I can order the full size. Yay! The matte looks great might try it one more time today so I can make sure it wont dry my face. Then I'll try the Semi Matte since it is summer a little shine or glimmer will look good. Have a Blessed Day Ladies.
Marie on June 24, 2012:
Hi Ladies, Ok I've been using BM for over 5 yrs. I loved it! Covered well gave my face a glow didn't get that cake face look with cracks from smile lines, shortly after my skin would itch and my cheeks would get red, didn't think it was BM. I had my share of acne but never had scars or the cysts I have now. About a year after using BM I ran out and went back to clinique it cleared my face but wasn't happy with the weight of the makeup or how it would break up with my fine lines. So I went back to BM, the past 2 yrs my skin has been getting worse, I blamed stress, hormones, diet, you name it I blamed it all except for BM because I love the lightness of it. Been doing tons of research the last couple of days and found Everyday Minerals you can order samples for only the shipping cost. I'm going to give it a try and let you ladies know how its working. Other women who switched from 'BM' to 'EM' are happy. They have the same ingredients except for one thing. Bare Minerals has Bismuth Oxychloride, a by-product of lead mining and can cause skin irritation in some women. Many women who think they can't wear mineral make-up because of itching and breakouts are reacting to bismuth oxychloride. Everyday Minerals doesn't use Bismuth oxychloride, they are all natural and Vegan friendly. I'll report back in a few weeks.

So happy I found this article, I have been using bare minerals for a little over a year now, I went in, got my make-up done by one of the sales women there and it looked amazing, I fell in love, so I purchased it right then and there. I cant remember when the cystic acne started but not until a few months afer starting BE, I tried blaming EVERYTHING else except BE, my face started to look worse with makeup on, I hated going out because of how it looked. I have never had problems with acne or my skin in general until i used bare minerals, my jawline, chin and around my mouth were covered with cysts and flakey dry skin (also something I had never had trouble with) I would take the makeup off at night go on with my skin care routine and my skin would fully repair itself, put my makeup on the next morning and go through the day with pimples coming up slowly in the same spots. I feel so dumb to not have thought it was BE this whole time, all the signs were there, I just did not want to admit it because of how much i loved the stuff. Thank you so much, not using it again starting today! :)

I have tried the matte and original foundations and haven't had reactions to either. I do know someone who reacts to it though. I don't think there's necessarily anything wrong with Bare Minerals' formulations. People simply have different skin chemistry and react to different products. My skin does very well with Bare Minerals, but reacts to any types of liquid foundation, especially those with perfumes.

I am hoping that anyone considering using Bare Minerals will read this review. I have always had acne prone skin, but found it cleared as I grew older. Wanting to experiment with new makeup, I bought a Bare Minerals kit. My skin became so dry and scaly that no moisturizer cleared it up. I also started experiencing deep cysts again. I felt like I lived at the dermatologist having cortizone injections. It was embarressing and expensive. I finally came across an article describing the allergic properties in Bare Minerals. I also started taking Spirolactone every day, which has been a lifesaver. I currently only use Clinique oil-free products, but when I need foundation, I turn to Benetint Fabulous Make up faker. It is oil free and provides great natural coverage. My 18 year old wanted to try bare Minerals and I discouraged her from buyimg it. She uses Benetint and Clinique as well and has pretty good skin for a teenager. If you are considering trying this makeup- just don't unless you are willing to risk ruining your skin.

I have had bad cystic acne on my chin since I was about 15, I'm now 18, and haven't found anything (other than expensive prescriptions) that would clear the break outs and keep them away. I then read about using the Lady Soma Antioxidant Masque and have been using it for about 3 days now and am amazed. The stuff totally dried up my pimples and they are now scabbed over and healing.
I would not, however, recommend using the masque all over your face as it does dry out skin. Only use it as a spot treatment.

I've been using Bare Minerals since I got acne, and it never helped or worsened until this last year. Now I have huge, painful cysts on my face that I can't get rid of. I started using a remedy that my mom found where you have to put Apple Cider Vinegar on your face after washing and drink two tablespoons of it mixed with whatever you want to balance your pH levels. THANK YOU! I did some research and yours was the most well written and easiest to identify with. Everyone was telling me I was crazy for thinking such an amazign make up could be ruining what was other wise fairly nice skin. I just switched last week and already...relief! And no more dermatologists!

Thank you so much for posting your story here - i thought it was just me! I too started using Bare Minerals a few weeks ago and have started coming out in cystic acne. I have become really frustrated and depressed with it and suspected Bare Minerals was causing it.Now i have read your story im throwing the pot in the bin! Thank you so much xx

I am so glad to hear that my story helped! It was so personal and had some painful memories, I almost didn't have the courage to write it.

I am SO relieved to read your story. I had very good skin up until about a month ago when I started using some Bare Minerals samples I got for free. I went from having completely clear, smooth, even skin to developing hideous cystic acne (I currently have 7-8 cysts on my face) on my forehead and chin. It is so embarassing, especially since I just started a new job, and I kept putting more Bare Minerals on to cover it up. Now I'm starting to realize the Bare Minerals might be causing it! THANK YOU for sharing your story - I'm throwing out the rest of my Bare Minerals right now! I'm praying these horrible cysts don't leave scars...I just want my skin back!

Your welcome!!! I have found that Walgreens Alpha Hydroxy Acid Cream mixed with a few drops of JASON tea tree oil every night really assisted in my "road to recovery". :) The tea tree oil will clear and prevent blemishes and the AHA will keep your skin turning over. It will cost like $16 and last for 2-3 months.

your story literally sounds exactly like mine. Im 22 and reallly sick of my acne and would do anything to get it away. I am buying new foundation but cant bear to throw away my 30 dollar bareminerals yet. THANKS

I don't know. All I know is that when I stopped using it, my cystic acne stopped. I know so many people have had reactions to the mica. I am positive it was the mica for me as well.

So what happened? Was the Mica an issue?
