Are Unhealthy Beauty Standards Associated with Animal Crossing?

Animal Crossing is a popular feel-good game from the age of 3 and up. With the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons on the Nintendo Switch, the game series has seen an increase of new fans. But with these new fans, came a trend on hating "ugly" villagers and a want to have the most attractive island as possible.

Why You Should Think Before Speaking

The point of this article isn't to say stop hating on other people's favourite villagers. Of course saying you hate something isn't very nice but everyone is entitled to their own opinions. What this article IS about however, is the reasons why people hate on certain villagers and why it can affect people more deeply than one expects. High standards of beauty is more often than not a bad thing as it can make people feel really insecure about themselves.

Why You Should Stop to Think Before Dismissing Something as Undesirable

Now it is time to discuss why unhealthy beauty standards in Animal Crossing isn't as harmless as people would like to believe. First of all, let's look at some of the traits villagers may have that people are deeming "ugly".

  • Unibrows, eg. Hazel
  • Beards, eg. Rodney
  • Eyebags, eg. Egbert
  • Large mouths, eg. Barold
  • Beady eyes, eg. Limberg
  • Beauty mark/mole, eg. Chow
  • Prominent teeth, eg. Cole

These are all genetics and other things that a lot of people in the world could have. Saying that you don't like a villager because it's ugly and has a unibrow can likely hurt those out there who do have unibrows and may already feel insecure about it. What's even worse is that some villagers could bare literal resemblance to real life people. I, myself, can recognize some people I know in a couple of villagers. I know I'd hate to see people insult these villagers that remind me of my loved ones!

Value Connections Over Beauty

Some people out there have an eye for beauty and an appreciation for it which is great! But at the end of the day, it's connections that really matter. In Animal Crossing, start accepting villagers that you may not have wanted before as you deemed them "ugly". From there on, try to take this new outlook to real life. Instead of judging someone by their looks, take interest in their personality and who knows, maybe you could make a lifetime partner or friend you could have otherwise overlooked.
