Everyone enjoys taking pride in their appearance, especially women. Having the opportunity to experiment with makeup products can increase confidence and make you feel good about yourself.

It's important to feel comfortable with your image and to embrace what you have. I'm sure if men could wear makeup without getting judged, they definitely would!

For those women who have small or not-so-bold eyes, it can be difficult to create a makeup effect that accentuates and makes your eyes appear sexier, more noticeable and smoldering. Eyes, they say, are the window to a person's soul, so why not make the most of yours?

Every eye is unique, and the shade, shape and pattern of one person’s eye can be totally different to another. By using basic techniques, it is possible to make your eyes appear even more beautiful.

You should learn what tones of makeup will complement the shade of your eye. When you feel proud of your eyes and wish to show them off, nothing can stand in your way. It boosts your confidence and makes you feel sexy.

What Is the Key to Sexy, Smokey Eye Makeup?

To get that sultry supermodel gaze, be sure to obtain the correct products to add to your makeup collection. You may already have these. You will need:

  • Eye shadow base (primer)
  • Dark coloured eyeliner
  • Deep coloured eye shadow
  • Light coloured eye shadow
  • Eye shadow brush
  • Lash lengthening mascara
  • Eyelash curler

Once you have these products, you should concentrate and perfect your eye makeup in a good mirror and in an area with a lot of light. This is so that you can spot any mistakes you make as you go along.

It can sometimes be deceiving when you don't have the right light to perfect your makeup in. (If you have ever done your makeup in the dark then you'll know what I mean!)

Step-by-Step Tutorial

To make that smokey eye appear flawless, you may need to practice a few times. This is okay, practice makes perfect. As you progress, you may even pick up some tips of your own! So anyway, let's begin.

Follow these steps to a successful smokey eye look. This should overall take you about ten minutes, but if it takes longer do not worry! The more time you spend perfecting your technique, the quicker you'll learn and the better the result.

1. Clean Your Face

Now that you are happy with the items you have purchased or found around your home, you should wash your face so that you start working on a blank canvas. Makeup, no matter what part of the face it is applied to, will always look better and stay on for longer when applied to clean, fresh and dry skin. Use a gentle face wash for sensitive skin. Try to exfoliate so that any dead or dry skin around the eyes is carefully removed.

2. Prepare the Eyelid

People who have oily skin may have to deal with eye shadow or makeup not staying in place throughout the day. The oil on the skin's surface will cause eye makeup to melt and leave unattractive smudges.

To avoid this, start with your eye shadow base, which is also known as a primer. Using a brush or cotton bud, sweep some of the eye shadow base across both lids. Leave it to dry before you continue onto the next step.

3. Apply Eyeliner

Depending on what look you're going for, the colours for eyeliner may differ. If you wish to get a deep smokey eye look, then opt for black, brown or deep grey.

If you want more of a jewelled tone smokey eye, opt for purple, blue or green. With your eyeliner, apply a thin line above the upper lash line. Start to make the line thicker in the middle of the eye; this creates fullness in your lashes.

4. Apply Eyeliner to Bottom Lashes

Now, you'll need to also apply eyeliner to the bottom lashes. As well as creating the effect that you have full lashes and a deep smokey look on top, you'll also need to do the same to the bottom.

Draw a thin line under the bottom lash and with a slightly damp cotton bud or your finger, smudge the eyeliner into a blurred line. A bit of deep eye shadow can also be added lightly with an eye shadow brush to create the same effect.

5. Apply a Light Base Colour

The key to creating a smokey eye effect is to contrast a light colour with a dark colour. Using a light coloured eye shadow and an eye shadow brush, lightly sweep some eye shadow across the eyelid and follow along to the brow bone. This creates a shadow.

Good colours are pearl or creams and the best consistency eye shadow would be a mousse, as this stays on for longer.

6. Apply Dark Eye Shadow

Apply the dark-coloured eye shadow you have chosen to your eyelid with the eye shadow brush. Use enough to coat your eyelid but be sure to stop below the brow bone where the light base colour was applied.

Blend the colour into the lash line where you applied eyeliner previously, and also blend carefully into the line that separates the dark shadow from the light.

7. Do a Double Take

Compare both eyes in the mirror by a window. This way, you can spot any mistakes and make sure that both eyes look even.

8. Curl the Eyelashes

Using an eyelash curler, line your eyelashes carefully and press down on the curler to create a beautiful curve in your lashes. Hold for ten seconds on each eye. This is important as it allows your lashes to be nicely shaped and compliment the blending you have done so well!

9. Apply Mascara

Now you have done the basic smokey eye look, but no smokey eye is complete without some seriously long lashes. Using your lash lengthening mascara, wiggle the brush from root to tip to coat evenly. Do a few layers until you're happy that they look dark and mysterious.

10. Get Your Best Dress on and Show Off Your Eyes

Now you have the eyes that will catch everyone else’s eye, so go show them off! Next time, try to change the colours you use to see what other effects you can create!
