5. Vivant Revitafoam

Vivant Revitafoam is a product that has stood the test of time, with over a decade of use by people who suffer from dry frizzy hair. Many hairdressers stand by it because it works extremely well when dryness is the main cause of the frizz.

Revitafoam is a conditioning mousse that can be applied after towel drying hair. When used before blow drying and styling hair, it adds moisture to the hair shaft and smooths it out to tame frizz at the source. As it is a mousse, the product is particularly beneficial for thin or fine frizzy hair that would be weighed down by heavier leave-in conditioning agents.

Product type: Leave-in conditioner and repair product

Hair type: Most effective for thin or fine frizzy hair, but can be used on any hair type.

Best use: If you have damaged frizzy hair, use this product after shampooing to balance moisture levels and help restore damaged hair to fighting strength. For best results, use it prior to blow drying and apply it directly to damaged frizzy ends.

4. De Lorenzo Infinite Detangler

De Lorenzo Infinite Detangler is certainly true to its namesake in that it detangles your hair. It does much more than just detangling however, adding moisture and relieving dryness when applied to stressed hair. By treating dry hair, it can alleviate one of the main causes of frizz and prevent it from happening to begin with.

As with all De Lorenzo products, the Infinite Detangler is formulated with a combination of natural moisturizers to condition the hair and nourish it from within. If you have dry frizzy hair, spraying this product after towel drying your hair will greatly benefit the way it feels and styles.

Product type: Leave-in conditioning spray

Hair type: Dry frizzy hair that needs extra moisture to prevent frizz.

Best use: This product is best used before blow drying your hair to prevent tangles and smooth dry frizzy hair. It works to fix frizzy hair by treating dryness and smoothing the hair so that it doesn't knot up.

3. Redken Smooth Lock Cream

Redken Smooth Lock Cream is a leave-in conditioner from Redken's Smooth Lock product family. All the products in this group are designed to help smooth hair before, during, and after styling.

This leave-in conditioner is particularly useful if you have dry frizzy hair. Too much dryness can be a source of frizz, and the best way to treat this is to combat the dryness itself. Redken Smooth Lock adds precious moisture to dry hair, giving it the elasticity and condition it needs to look its best. Less dryness means less moisture, and smoother, shinier hair overall.

Product type: Leave-in conditioner

Hair type: Dry frizzy hair that needs extra moisture.

Best use: To treat dry frizzy hair, apply this product after you towel dry your hair, prior to blow drying. You can also use the product at any point during the day if you have hair that is prone to dryness.

2. Redken All Soft Hair Serum

Redken All Soft hair serum is simply one of the best hair products for dry frizzy hair of any severity. In fact, it's a product that has many uses other than just treating frizz, and can help you achieve straighter hair or relieve problems with dryness if you use it prior to styling your hair.

The All Soft hair serum is also a great way to protect your hair from the humidity in the air. It shields your hair from excess moisture or dryness, forming a barrier that locks in moisture where the hair needs it most.

1. Joico K-Pak Smoothing Balm

Joico's smoothing balm works in a slightly different way to help get rid of frizzy hair. Most hair products that are used to tame frizzy hair work because they treat the underlying dryness or assist in the hair styling process. Joico smoothing balm however, works kind of like a mini keratin treatment that is activated as you style your hair.

When you apply this hair product before straightening your hair, the heat will activate the keratin protein and seal the hair structure. This has a strengthening effect that can repair damaged frizzy hair, whilst the boost to the straightening of your flat iron helps to smooth out any remaining frizz.

The effects are temporary and only last until you wash your hair again, but if you use the smoothing balm in place of your regular straightening product, you will notice a vast improvement in how straight and smooth your hair looks. You can even use this product in combination with other products and treatments for frizzy hair if you need extra frizz-busting power, but the product is a styling marvel by itself.

Product type: Keratin treatment

Hair type: All hair types. Especially damaged or curly frizzy hair.

Best use: Use before straightening or curling hair. This product needs heat to activate it, and it will also protect your hair from the heat used. Replace your regular heat protection cream or spray for this smoothing balm for best results.

Restoring damaged hair

Damaged hair

Damaged hair is especially prone to frizz because the hair's internal structure is compromised and the outer cuticle layer no longer functions properly. The internal damage to your hair can lead to weakness and breakages, promoting frizz as the hair is no longer smooth and healthy. Cuticle damage however, is the most significant cause of frizz in damaged hair.

A damaged cuticle layer no longer functions as intended, so the cuticle's function to lock in moisture, protect against humidity, and reduce friction on the hair shaft is not working properly when you have damaged hair. This leads to dryness, which in itself is a cause of frizzy hair, and the increased friction from a rougher hair shaft frizzes your hair up even more.

If you have damaged frizzy hair, the best idea is to address the damage first and use hair repair treatments like Redken CAT or Joico Reconstructor. It's easier to repair some of the damage than it is to fight an uphill battle against the dry frizzy hair it causes.

Frizzy hair product combinations

These hair products for frizzy hair can be used by themselves, or in most cases you can create your own combination. The key here when planning to use multiple styling products is to use smaller amounts and avoid mixing hair products that are in a similar styling family.

If your frizzy hair simply won't respond to even the most intensive therapy, you can go all out by tackling your frizz at every direction. The combination of a leave-in conditioner, Joico smoothing balm, and a hair serum won't conflict with each other, and the frizz defeating effects of the combination are stronger than each product alone.

To use this combination, apply Redken Smooth Lock after you towel dry your hair and work it in. Your hair should be properly prepped for the blow dry process by gently combing the treatment through your hair. To blow dry your hair in a way that will tame frizz, always hold the blow dryer down in the direction of hair growth. This seals the hair cuticles to help smooth your hair and prevent dryness from occurring. It does take slightly longer to blow dry your hair this way, but the benefits far outweigh the time.

Joico Smoothing Balm should be used as the next step, as this product needs to be used before straightening or curling hair because the heat activates it. Apply the product as evenly as possible, and style your hair, taking particular caution to use proper sectioning technique and styling thin layers of hair at a time. If you section your hair out and straighten it section by section, you catch far more frizz and improve results immensely.

Once your hair has been straightened or curled, the final step is to use Redken All Soft hair serum. The hair serum will smooth out any residual frizz, lock in the moisture from your leave in conditioner, and help protect your hair from humidity because it acts like a barrier cream for hair. With this powerful combination of products, you can treat even the most severe problem, allowing you to tame frizzy hair and look your best every single day.

Maffew James (author) on September 20, 2014:

Hi Antonietta,

The treatment you received is a chemical straightener and it's not uncommon for these to cause damage. Your hairdresser should have explained this to you. Usually the hair will maintain good condition, but hair that has been previously coloured or damaged is particularly prone to damage.

Also, even though your hair has been straightened, that doesn't mean it will be completely straight, or completely smooth. The frizz is the result of residual curl and even people with naturally straight hair tend to deal with this problem. The dryness is temporary.

For now, use a good conditioner after you shampoo your hair, apply a leave in moisturiser after towel drying, then either brush it out gently and let it air dry or blow dry it. If you blow dry it, use the blow dryer in a downward direction from the top of your head to the floor. This smooths the hair cuticles and straightens out frizz. Apply a serum like Redken All Soft and that will lock in all the moisture from the conditioners, helping to stop your hair from feeling dry.

Finally, if you notice increased breakage, that is actual damage. You can repair damage like this by using protein treatments. Redken Cat and Joico Reconstructor are too such products.

You can also completely smooth and straighten out your hair by finishing it with a hair straightener. Hair straighteners are easily the best way to smooth out frizz and eliminate puffiness. If you use one, do so after applying the serum, then apply a little extra serum after you finish.
