Everywhere you look, you'll notice box braids are back! Not since the 90's have box braids been your go-to style for staying on trend. Fortunately, braids have come a long way since then and here are 7 tips to make your braids fabulous!
1. Braid in the Direction You Would Like Your Braids to Fall
For a neater appearance, braid your hair in the direction you would like your braids to naturally fall. You can achieve this by separating a U-Part or L-shape leave out, that you will braid last. Once you have braided the rest of your hair, pay special attention when braiding your leave out. DO create a defined part and braid in the direction you would like your hair to fall. DON'T braid all of your hair at once without a planned hairstyle.
2. Choose Hair With a Natural Looking Curl Pattern
When selecting your braiding hair, choose hair with a natural looking curl pattern that fits your hair type. For instance, if your hair is kinky, DO choose hair with a tight curl or yaki texture. DON'T choose unnatural looking textures such as water wave or yaki pony. Your braids should look classy and never tacky! The great news is you are not limited to the selection of hair from your local beauty supply, there are many websites such as hairsisters.com that provide a variety of styles and textures.
2. Try Ombre Colors
A great way to spice up your braids routine is to experiment with color! DO choose subtle highlights that compliment your skin. Try using ombre highlights for a modern twist on hair color. DON'T blend multiple hair colors on your own. Avoid two-tone or rainbow braids by selecting colors that are already blended in the package.
4. Try Thick Braids for a Throwback Style
To achieve the "Poetic Justice" inspired style, you will need to use at least 10 bags of hair for proper length and fullness. DO apply baby oil to your braids and dip them in boiling water to tighten your braid pattern and add shine. DON'T use heavy braiding hair because 10 bags can strain your neck or cause headaches. Be sure to select a lightweight brand of hair.
5.Frame Your Face With Layers
To achieve a modern style, try adding layers to your braids. If your braids have loose ends DO cut layers in your hair for flowing movement and to frame your face. DON'T leave your hair "as is" after braiding because the curls may look unruly and uneven. You want to cut your braids in the same fashion as your natural hair or hair extensions.
6. Use Natural Oils on Hair and Skin
When wearing braids, one of the most important things you should do is keep your hair moisturized! While there are many moisturizers on the market designed for braids, they are not all good for the health of your hair. DO invest in natural oils that are good for both your hair and skin. DON'T use cheap oils that contain a mixture of fillers, alcohol, and fragrance. If you would only use the oil on your hair and would never put it on your skin, don't use it. In addition to natural oils, remember that water is the best moisturizer of all. So be sure spritz your hair and scalp!
7. Rock Your Braids With Confidence!
Now that you have your sexy new braids, be sure to rock your hair with style! DO look and feel fierce when wearing your new do. Let the world know that braids are back and are not going anywhere! DON'T let your braids get old and sloppy! Braids can look unprofessional and unappealing when not maintained. Like all hairstyles, you want to keep them looking new! That way braids remain your hot hair style rather than your "break" between styles. Now rock your hair with confidence!
