Book for crochet lovers:
Crochet, unlike knitting and many other types of crafts, is not something that can be replicated by a machine; crochet has to be done by hand. Because of that, most fashion designers don’t offer a lot of crochet in their collections. But crochet goes through periods of being trendy in fashion (we’re currently in one of those times) and as a result there are designers who have taken it upon themselves to include crochet items in the lineup of what they have to offer. Crochet items may not always be the first ones you look at from a famous designer, but because it’s rare and unique and you know that it’s handcrafted it’s just a little bit more special than their other offerings.
Here’s a look at seven different designers that I’ve seen do some really cool things with crochet over the years:
D&G Crochet Bags
1. Dolce and Gabbana
This brand has done quite a few things with crochet that I adore. My personal favorite example of their crochet work is a great black crochet dress that was worn by Madonna in a photo shoot. However what’s actually much more popular is their lineup of crochet handbags. In particular people have really taken to their Miss Sicily handbag, which has the traditional granny square crochet look that not too many other famous fashion designers have dared to put out there.
There haven’t been tons of Versace crochet items over the years. These items are very few and far between. But they stand out because they created one of my very, very favorite gowns to include crochet, a stunning asymmetrical black gown in silk and crochet.
Moschino has put crochet out there in stores and on runways multiple times and each time it is different. They’ve done crochet vest-dresses that have a very 1970’s chic look. They’ve done babydoll dresses that are so stylish you might not even realize at first that they’re handcrafted in crochet. And they’ve recently done some very bold crochet designs including putting neon twists on the traditional doily and adding that to a sweater.
4. Diane Von Furstenburg
This designer is so classy and stylish so I really love that she’s done some stuff with crochet. Her crochet items tend to have beautiful detailed stitch work and include a slightly openwork, lacy design. Dresses seem to be already lined to make up for this openwork design but tops are often kept unlined so that you can layer them over what you want to wear.
The Chanel brand, like Versace, hasn’t done a whole lot with crochet. It makes the occasional rare appearance on the runway and doesn’t return again for awhile. But when they do it, they do it right. I really love the great flirty white dresses they created in September 2010. I’d also like to note that Chanel is one of the few brands that I’ve seen really inspire the patterns of crochet designers over the years.
6. Donna Karan
This classy designer who makes easy-to-wear clothes does a casually beautiful kind of crochet in her work. Her crochet items are often loose-fitting and cozy and tend to be creamy in color. The neutrals make the crochet easy to wear.
7. Calvin Klein
This brand also puts out crochet that’s often in neutral colors and is easy to wear. The shapes that they choose are a little bit younger than what Donna Karan puts out but there are definitely some similarities. With this brand the crochet is usually in the trim, details and accessories rather than the full outfit.

Oh my goodness I have just fallen in love with the Donna Karan shawl. How beautiful. I love to crochet but I am nowhere near as talented as these designers. I am green with envy and jealousy. :0)

These are very pretty. When I was young, my Grandmother use to crochet us vests to wear. None of my friends had them and I hated them. The only time I wore it was to visit Grandma. If she had made me things like you have here, oh how different it would have been.

Love to see articles on crochet! I noticed a huge come back with it and have added crochet items to my business. I think our country needs to support hand created items and the businesses who create them!
