Opening day of baseball season is right around the corner. You still have time to create a new league and start playing. What are you waiting for? Start planning your 2019 fantasy draft party now!

What's a Fantasy Baseball Draft?

...and why does it need a party?

The draft is when all the managers in your fantasy baseball league meet to pick their team's players before the start of the season. Since this may be the only time the whole league gets together it's a good reason for a party with lots of trash talk and fun.

The league's commissioner usually organizes the draft and party, but it could be done by anyone in the league.

Tips for a Successful Draft Party

  • Plan early. Pick a draft date and location that will work for your league. Then send invites out to everyone. Make a reservation early if you're having the party at a restaurant or bar.
  • Find someone to keep time and record picks. This is an important job that helps the commissioner keep everything on track and fair. It's best if the timekeeper is not one of the league managers so that everyone can stay focused on their draft.
  • Plan for food and drinks. These could be provided by the commissioner, catered or have everyone bring something pot luck style. The commissioner could include the cost of food and supplies for the party in the league's entry fee.
  • Get a fantasy baseball draft board. A good draft board will help you track the league's draft picks. This makes it easy for all managers to see which players have been claimed and avoid the embarrassment of picking a player that's not available.
  • Play baseball videos. This helps get everyone thinking about baseball and looking forward to the season. Have a baseball bloopers or greatest plays video playing with the volume muted. Or schedule the draft during an MLB pre-season game and play that (remember to focus on your draft and not the game).
  • Plan breaks. Most fantasy drafts take 2-4 hours so plan for at least one bathroom break. Let everyone know when the break(s) will occur.

Fantasy Draft Party Location Ideas

Host your draft party at a place where your league can have fun and get loud during the draft. That makes the library a bad choice and your favorite sports bar a good choice.

  • Home - Having the party at your house or another league member's house is a popular choice because it's easy, free and you have a lot of flexibility with your party planning.
  • Bar or Restaurant - Most bars and restaurants have space for private parties. Look around for places that offer fantasy draft party packages and discounts.
  • A Baseball Stadium - Contact your local minor or major league ball park and ask if you can rent a luxury box, dugout or any other part of the stadium to hold your draft.
  • Draft Getaway - Make your fantasy draft part of a road trip or friends night out. A trip to Spring Training would make a great draft party getaway!

More Fun Baseball Draft Party Ideas

  • Post the final standings from last year. This is an easy way to refresh the rivalries from last season and get the league excited for the draft. Print the standings and display them where everyone can see.
  • Display the league trophy. For leagues with a championship trophy the draft party is the perfect time to show everyone what they're playing for. Ask the defending champion to make a little speech about their past greatness.
  • Wear a baseball jersey or funny fantasy baseball shirt. Dig your favorite team or player's jersey out of the closet and wear it. Or get yourself a fantasy baseball t-shirt to wear.
  • Make predictions. Have each manager make a prediction about the season before the draft starts. Record them to compare against actual results at the end of the season.
