United Chatter is an Opinion-based fan blog dedicated to the Manchester United football club. I have started this blog to share my opinions.
No matter how hard it is to digest, we have to admit that Manchester United football club is not relevant in the footballing world anymore. We used to be the Bayern Munich of England, the Real Madrid of England and perhaps one of the biggest football clubs in the entire universe.
But, since the departure of Sir Alex, things have only gone downhill for us. After that, the appointment of David Moyes was shambles, Louis Van Gaal was a mockery, Mourinho was rubbish, and Ole was a farce. And we kept on believing in the ‘reset’ that the club was planning.
Now, we are on the cusp of another reset which will be the fifth in the last 10 years. We are nowhere near being a club that would challenge for the Premier League or even the Champion League title. Manchester United is the new Arsenal of England.
According to the latest Man Utd transfer news and rumours, the current Ajax boss, Erik Ten Hag is all set to take over the job at Old Trafford from Ralf Rangnick who will take an advisory role in the club. Is this the reset that will make Man United relevant again in world football? Let’s find out.
Man Utd Creating Stars
One of the things that made me fall in love with this fantastic club was the ability to create players. The reason why Manchester United was the most successful club in England a couple of decades back was the class of 92 primarily. We took a group of young players and made them stars.
David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, and Nicky Butt were all part of that class of 92. Their stories fascinated me and the first footballing superstar that I fell for was David Beckham. So, when he left Man United, I was heartbroken. I thought no one can take his place and the number 7 shirt.
In comes Cristiano Ronaldo. And, we created perhaps the greatest footballer to have ever played this game. Along with him, we created Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra, Michael Carrick, and so many other fantastic players. Man Utd was a club that used to create stars and I was proud as a Man Utd supporter.
Man United Now Buying Stars
Even before Sir Alex left, during his last few years, he started buying stars. You can attribute this to the time when Glazers took charge of this club. They made Man United a money-making machine. So, they needed stars to sell shirts and get brand deals.
So, Sir Alex bought Van Persie. After that, we bought Di Maria, Pogba, Sanchez, Harry Maguire, and many other popular players who failed miserably. We even brought back Cristiano Ronaldo which I never saw happening at Man Utd before. Man United buying a player who left the club before.
I won’t say it was a bad choice. How I can say that when this man is carrying the entire team on his shoulders throughout the season? But, that showed me the intention of this club. They want stars and not the young players that they can nurture. Man Utd has now become a commercial organization; not a football club.
What Happens with Erik Ten Hag
Erik Ten Hag is one manager known to create stars from a young pool of players. Just look at the players like Donny Van De Beek, Hakim Ziyech, Matthijs de Ligt, and Frenkie de Jong. All of them came through an Ajax squad that was managed by Erik ten Hag.
Now, you can sense a similarity between Sir Alex and Ten Hag. Yes, he can create players and Manchester United needs a manager who can create world-class players from a young pool of players. Yes, we have a great group of young players that our previous managers never used.
The prime example of that is Anthony Elanga and the way he performed since Rangnick gave him a consistent run in the first team. That is why I believe that Manchester United has young players who can turn things around for this club. But, they should be nurtured properly.
With Ten Hag at the helm, I am sure that those players will be nurtured properly. And, also, the structure of this club will improve massively and we will truly go into the reset that the club needed a decade ago. And, we will also get rid of the players who don’t want to wear Man Utd shirts.
Erik Ten Hag and the Modern Football
One of the most exciting things about the prospect of Erik Ten Hag joining Manchester United is that we will be playing an exciting brand of football. When we see Man City, or Liverpool, or Chelsea play, we get Goosebumps because modern football is exciting. But, Man Utd’s playing style is boring.
We still rely on counter-attacks and we don’t press. The players we have cannot press properly and that is why Ralf Rangnick, the man who invented gegenpressing, is also struggling at Man Utd. But, from the next season, if we appoint Ten Hag early, we might see that change.
Ten Hag’s Ajax does play a pressing football. They play a high line and they are on the ball all the time. Most of the time, Ajax do have high ball possession and that is why Ten Hag’s system is so exciting to watch. I used to enjoy watching United play and I will enjoy it again with Ten Hag in charge of our club.
Before I conclude, there is one more thing that I would want to say. The footballing philosophy of Erik Ten Hag and Ralf Rangnick is the same. That is why Ralf wants Ten Hag. If they can work together and also bring in someone like Paul Mitchell to work as the director of football along with them, I think Manchester United will once again become a relevant club in world football. We are already an economic powerhouse in world football and with the new management in place; we can also become a footballing powerhouse. So, with Ten Hag, I feel positive about Man united.
