Who Is Currently Winning The Hundred Cricket Tournament?

Among her other interests, Katie is a cricket obsessive. Although she doesn't play herself, she avidly supports her home team, Northants.

In the UK, The Hundred tournament has become one of the biggest competitions in the country at the moment. As a new format of the game of cricket, it is aimed at bringing new, younger fans into the game, whilst also marking a huge milestone in the promotion of women's cricket.

How does The Hundred work?

Being a new competition this year, in 2021, not many people know what The Hundred is. There are eight teams from different locations in the UK, and each puts forward one men's and one women's. They will all play each other once, as well as playing their closest team geographically twice.

The main aim of the game is to score as many runs as possible without losing all ten wickets on the team, but the twist is they only have 100 balls to do it. The game has been created mainly to encourage big hitting and a fast-paced game in the hope that more people will gain an interest in cricket.

Who are the eight teams?

In the competition, 8 teams are currently playing, and team is given a home ground where at least four of their matches will be played (or more if they qualify for the eliminators and/or finals day). They are:

  • The Oval Invincibles, based at The Kia Oval, Surrey
  • London Spirit, based at Lord's Cricket Ground, London
  • Southern Brave, based at The Ageas Bowl, Southampton
  • Welsh Fire, based at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff
  • Trent Rockets, based at Trent Bridge, Nottingham
  • Birmingham Pheonix, based at Edgebaston Stadium, Birmingham
  • Northern Superchargers, based at Headingly Cricket Ground, Leeds
  • Manchester Originals, based at Old Trafford, Manchester

To add to the fun, every team is sponsored by a different British snack company, and their team kit is designed around the packaging of the chosen savoury.

These tables only reflect the tables as of the 8th August 2021. They will change as the competition continues, although it looks like there may not be many variations as we move towards the eliminators.

If you haven't been following The Hundred so far, I strongly encourage you to pick up a match every now and then in your free time. The competition is such a great way to enjoy cricket if you're a first-time viewer and you may even find yourself attending T20, one day and even test matches in your local county if you become obsessive like me!

All women's matches are being streamed for free through the Sky Sports Cricket youtube channel, and some of the men's games. There are 10 men's matches being shown on BBC 2 and recorded on iPlayer, as well as all of the eliminators and finals day.

Every match is being shown on the Sky Sports: The Hundred TV channel (subscription only), and you can also listen to commentary on every game for free on BBC 5 live sports extra and the BBC Sounds App.

Enjoy!
