The Showcase of the immortals Wrestle Mania is just around the corner. Over the years , the Wrestling industry has changed a lot and so has measuring the magnitude of a particular match , Some are the obvious contenders to be featured here just by the names and the star power involved , and others importance has risen with time as that once we see them back what benefits it did for the future of this industry. Before going further let me be clear that only those matches will be considered which went last on that particular show , so... here's my Top 10 :-
10) WWE Championship - Kurt Angle (C) vs Brock Lesnar - Wrestle Mania 19
A 25 year old rookie Brock Lesnar was having the best debut run of any wrestler before him. Went on a monster heel undefeated run , Won the king of the ring , defeated Hollywood Hulk Hogan , defeated The Undertaker , Won the WWE title from The Rock , got betrayed by his manager Paul Heyman and turned face, Won the Royal Rumble and got himself a spot in the main event of his very first Wrestle Mania. A perfect foil for him was the Olympic gold medalist and one of the best in ring workers of all time Kurt Angle. They went back and fourth for a good 25 minutes before the unthinkable happened and Brock landed on his head trying to do a shooting star press from the top rope (a thing that this match is famously remembered for today) before Kurt got the strings back together , took an F5 and finished the match. This botch however does not discredits the greatness of this technical masterclass and the rise of one of the greatest superstars of his time Brock Lesnar to the top , this time as a fan favorite.
9) Hulk Hogan and Mr.T vs "Rowdy" Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff - Wrestle Mania 1
The very first Wrestle Mania needed a main event which can catch the attention of the viewers present in the crowd and the ones sitting at home. The star power here was off the charts , The biggest heel in the industry Roddy Piper and another top villain Paul Orndorff were at the one side of the corner taking on the biggest wrestling star of the 80s Hulk Hogan and a famous television personality Mr.T. Not to mention the boxing icon Muhammad Ali was at ringside as a special enforcer. There's not much to talk about the in-ring action here as the babyface team picks up the win after 13 minutes but we can say that there could not have been a better main event than this to put the show on map.
8) WWE Championship - The Rock (C) vs Stone Cold Steve Austin - Wrestle Mania 15
Wrestle Mania 15 was an event that did not left much to talk about barring its main event. Stone Cold Steve Austin had became the biggest wrestling star since peak Hulk Hogan and his feud with the chairman of the company Vince McMahon was well liked by the fans and finally made the WWF to get an upper hand on their competitors WCW. His opponent here was the rising young starlet, The Corporate Champion The Rock who really came on his own after turning heel and aligning himself with the boss. The first of the three Mania matches between two of the biggest stars of the Attitude Era saw a lot of shenanigans and ultimately , the beloved babyface Austin came out on top overcoming the odds. The Rock also got a lot of cheers from the crowd during this match which was a sign of things to come.
7) WWE Championship - "Macho Man" Randy Savage (C) vs Hulk Hogan - Wrestle Mania 5
If Hulk Hogan was the biggest star of the golden era , Macho Man Randy Savage was a close second. After winning the WWE championship in last year's Wrestle Mania , Savage formed an alliance with Hogan called "The Mega Powers" with his real-life partner Miss Elizabeth acting as their valet. The plants for Savage's heel turn begin as he grew jealous of Hogan's closeness with Elizabeth and with Hogan eliminating him from that years Royal Rumble (albeit by mistake) was the final straw. A 17 minute back and forth match saw Macho Man's in-ring prowess and Hulk playing a perfect babyface with the latter coming on top in the end. The breaking up of The Mega Powers story line is considered one of the best ever Mania plots to this date.
6) RAW & Smack Down Women's Championship - Ronda Rousey (C) vs Charlotte Flair (C) vs Becky Lynch - Wrestle Mania 35
It took four years after the Women's revolution began for the ladies to get their Wrestle Mania main event. After they got their time to shine and with some new signings , Women's wrestling have constantly been the best part about WWE programming in the last 4 and a half years. The MMA star who did a successful transition to wrestling Ronda Rousey was the badass heel Raw women's champion while Charlotte Flair had the smack Down women's title in her grasp. The challenger, the biggest star in the company , male or female , at that time Becky Lynch was the crowd favorite heading into this match. Becky became "Becky two belts" after pinning rousey and the history of the first women's wrestle mania main event was created.
5) The Rock vs John Cena - Wrestle Mania 28
A match that no one thought they will witness. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson returned to the WWE after a 7 year absence as the guest host of Wrestle Mania 27. The seeds of an eventual match were born at that year's main event as The Rock cost John Cena his chance at the WWE Championship. A 30 minute match which was billed as once in a lifetime , until they fought again next year, saw the Attitude era star taking the win after a final rock bottom to the Chain gang soldier. How big was this match can be understood with this Mania becoming the highest grossing PPV event in professional wrestling history at the time.
4) Career vs Streak - Shawn Michaels vs The Undertaker - Wrestle Mania 26
Two of the biggest names you can associate with wrestle mania.. The heart break kid Shawn Michaels and The Phenom The Undertaker went at it for the second time at the showcase of the immortals ,this time rightfully so in the main event. They had an almost impossible task to top their match from last year's event but with the storyline and emotions attached to this match , it didn't came out looking as the inferior of the two battles they had. The Phenom came out on top after a 24 minute masterclass letting Mr.Wrestle Mania's career to rest in peace with a devastating tombstone piledriver.
3) WWE Champion Hulk Hogan vs Intercontinental Champion Ultimate Warrior - Winner take all - Wrestle Mania 6
What happens when an immovable objects meets the unstoppable force?? By the time 1990s rolled around , the plan was to give the beloved face-painted powerhouse The Ultimate Warrior more spotlight and a passing of torch match was made between him and the immortal Hulk Hogan. A winner take all match seems like the perfect opportunity to finally put The Warrior at the top spot as the crowd was going nuts with just a test of strength spot by the two 300 pound stars they were doing for the first five minutes of the match. The bout went on till 24 minutes and The Warrior ultimately, no pun intended, got the one , two , three after dodging Hogan's legdrop and hitting the Warrior splash.
2) WWE Championship - Hulk Hogan (C) vs Andre The Giant - Wrestle Mania 3
Many of you must be wondering why this isn't on top of the list?? Arguably the biggest attraction of a match WWE has ever put on. The Legendary Andre billed as an undefeated monster clashed against the immortal Hulk Hogan All of the 87000 people at the Silverdome , Michigan got a stunned look on their faces as they saw the Hulk picking up a 550 pound Andre and giving him a bodyslam followed by a legdrop to secure the win and fully cementing himself as the top star of the company. Other than that spot there wasn't much to discuss bout the actual match as Andre was past his prime by this time by the sheer magnitude of this match is enough to make it one of the most memorable Mania matches of all time.
1) WWE Championship - The Rock (C) vs Stone Cold Steve Austin - Wrestle Mania 17
Just six days to Wrestle mania 17 , The Monday night wars had finally ended as WWE purchased WCW. Heading into what is to this date , possibly the best Wrestle Mania of all time , two of the corner stones of the WWE The Rock and Austin had become , arguably, the two of the biggest wrestling stars of all time. The build up to this match was absolutely brilliant with Austin coming back from a career threatening injury , winning the royal rumble and getting a chance to headline Mania and The Rock , getting the WWE title in his possession at the No Way Out PPV to confirm the second main event between the two stalwarts. The match was an all out brawl that lasted almost 40 minutes with Austin shocking everyone by turning heel and taking help from the devil himself Vince McMahon to win the prized possession. I believe this match was also the peak of professional wrestling in terms of star power and the magnitude and it hasn't been equaled just yet.
