The Simplest and Easiest Recipe for Boilies to Catch Carp

How to Make Boilies for Carp

In this article, I will reveal the simplest recipe for boilies—that is, homemade bait for catching carp. I'll give you a handful of tricks and tips for making your own boilies at home.

If you're new to carp fishing and want to save money, making boilies at home is a great start and also gives you an opportunity to experiment with different flavours and colours to give you an edge over everyone else.

Don’t Overcomplicate Your Base Mixes

Nowadays it seems to be so complicated—the more ingredients the boilie recipe has, the better the boilies are supposed to be and the bigger carp they will catch. However, in my experience, this is not the case. Personally, I believe the simpler the boilie base mix recipe is, the more you can concentrate on the liquid part of the boilie-making process.

So Where Do I Start?

If you're new to boilie making, I would start with a simple base mix like this recipe below, leaving you room to customise it however you wish.

Ingredients for 500 g of Boilie Base

  • Semolina 230g
  • Soya Flour 125g
  • Maize Meal 65g
  • Milk powder 40g
  • Wheat Germ 40g

A 500g batch of base mix use would usually use around three eggs, depending on the size of the eggs you're using. When you're mixing in the eggs, add any liquid attractants to your mix. This also helps lock in the flavours and help leak out the natural stimulants that carp love.

So You've Created the Simple Basemix, What's Next?

Once you have created the simple base mix above, it’s honestly up to you what you want to add to it. Great places for base mix ingredients and liquid attractants online are AA Baits or CC Moore. Both sites have a large range of ingredients so you can make any type of boilie you wish.

Below is a list of my top favours used in carp fishing to give you an idea of what favours to try out when making boilies.

Test, Test, and Test Your Boilies

Testing homemade boilies can help you find the right recipe for you. Making your own bait gives you a unique advantage, as no one else on your lake will be using it.

The easiest way to test your homemade baits is to take them to a highly stocked commercial fishery and catch a few fish on them, which will build your confidence to use them on a lower stocked specimen lake for much bigger carp.

For pop-ups microwave instead of boiling... spread out on a plate, high for 1min, then 30sec at a time until they seem done.

Whats the ingredient that makes pop ups buoyant... yeast ? Bicarbonate of soda ?
