The 15 Hardest Sports to Play

The 15 hardest sports to play.

This is my opinion of the 15 hardest sports and a little bit about why. Some of them have cool videos to go along with them. Take the poll at the end to let me know what your opinion of the hardest sport is.

#15 Volleyball

Volleyball requires leg strength and some agility. There isn't a whole lot of endurance or real physical challenge, that's why it is number 15.

#14 Baseball

What makes baseball hard on the skill side of it, is actually hitting a ball pitched 90 mph or faster. Baseball both batting and playing the field requires very fast reflexes. Baseball players also must be able to sprint very fast. Lastly I think core strength and upper body strength is crucial to the game. Half of your time though is just spent sitting down and watching. That is why baseball is only 14.

#13 Tennis

Tennis can be a very long game. tennis also requires speed and agility. While playing tennis you need to be able to turn on a dime. I don't feel like tennis really pushes you to the limit in more than a few parts of your body.

#12 Basketball

Basketball is a very draining sport to play. Don't get me wrong, you can work up a pretty good sweat playing. But you really only have to push yourself 100% when you have the ball. Also due to the size of a basketball court, you don't have to run more than maybe 30 or 40 yards at a time. Basketball also because of its positions does not require everyone to be lightening fast or have the ability to jump really high. Basketball can be an intense workout, but not enough to be ahead of these next sports.

#11 Football

Football requires a lot of sprinting. The skill required is catching the football and throwing it for one player. One of the things that make football the hardest is you must have the ability to think on your feet and make or change decisions in a split second to make the play work. You must be able to read the other team and adjust as a team accordingly. You have to not only watch what the other team is doing as a whole, but you have to be on the same level mentally as your team so that you think just like they do. Football is a hard hitting sport and requires great strength and agility and speed. However not ALL of the players need to be Iron men.

#10 Lacrosse

Lacrosse has an extreme amount of running and sprinting involved. Lacrosse on the other hand does not require a whole lot of physical strength. Lacrosse can be very rough at times and does require a great deal of athleticism. You got to run, jump, catch, throw, block, and defend. Lacrosse physically is almost on the same level as soccer.

#9 Rugby

Rugby will get you roughed up. It's harder hitting than football and you don't wear pads. Rugby also requires great lower and upper body strength. Rugby however does not require a lot of speed. You do need to be fast but not as fast as other sports may require you to be.

#8 Bull Riding

Bull riding obviously does not require you to be very strong or fast or even in that good of shape. If you look at a bull rider though they usually are, and for good reason. The stronger you are the better you chances of holding on are. Bull riding requires a lot of core strength as well. You have a 2,000 pound bull that is pure muscle trying to buck you off. You will be using your abs and lower back the whole time trying to keep your balance and stay on. You also better be fast for when you do get off the bull unless you want to become a skewer.

Scroll to Continue

#7 Nascar

Nascar is a little under rated in my opinion. Most people will say that all you do is drive a car in circle, but it is much more than that. Think about times you have gone on a long road trip. How did you feel at the end of it? I know that when I drove from South Carolina to West Virginia I was tired, eyes wanted to shut, my body was sore from sitting in the same position, my legs were stiff, and your drained mentally from being at a high state of alertness. Now imagine driving 500 laps at speeds around 200 mph. Since you are going that fast then you must pay even more attention and the car is that much harder to control. Your whole body must be tense just trying to steer it. The heat that fills the inside of the car is extreme, not to mention your wearing a nomex suit and racing helmet and your head is virtually immobile. The sweat and fatigue that will overcome your body is much more than you would ever probably imagine. The other reason I put Nascar as #7 is because of how hard it is to actually win.

#6 Golf

Golf requires a lot of physical strength and flexibility. I played 18 holes of golf before and did a lot of driving on a range. I'm not a golfer though. I have no club, no golf balls (i almost left out the word golf, ha ha), and can only name like 3 golfers. Like i said though I have played. I can't tell you how many times my body snapped, crackled, and popped playing. I sound like a fresh bowl of rice crispy treats, and I think i pulled several muscles. Now driving the ball 400 yards requires both strength and perfect swing. Did you know Tiger Woods can bench press 300 pounds? The main reason golf is #6 is because of the skill required to excel at it and how hard it is to play.

#5 MMA

MMA is a very very tough sport. You have to without a doubt have complete full body strength, you have to know the moves, you have to be able to think fast about what you need to do as far as offensive moves and counters. Endurance and Stamina is everything especially when the fight goes to the ground. It is obviously a rough sport considering smashing someones teeth in is part of it. I'm also certain being kicked in the kidney does not feel so great. The conditioning and strength training these fighters goes through is absolutely brutal. If you have seen an MMA fight or some of their training you will see why I placed it here at #5.

#4 Swimming

It is scientific fact that swimming is the best exercise you can do. It is a great cardiovascular workout. You would be surprised how much you sweat swimming. You however don't know your sweating for obvious reasons. Swimming also gives your muscles a pretty good workout. The resistance and amount of cardio required for swimming gives your body a great workout and when you swim for competition your going to use as much energy and burn as much calories in 20 minutes than you would in an hour in most other sports. This is why I put swimming at #4.

#3 Soccer

If you have ever played soccer on a legit team in a legit league with a legit coach you will know that soccer practice is probably one of the punishments Satan makes you take part in while your in hell. The sprinting, jumping, drills, and other exercises in soccer is insane. You will fall into a narcoleptic type sleep immediately after a 3 hours soccer practice I assure you. Truth be told the practices are more running than an actual game, but the games are just as hard. During a game you use speed, agility, jumping, cutting, defending, and all sorts of things. If you have seen a professional soccer players legs and calves, you'll instantly know how much they run. I can guarantee you they don't lift weights to look like that. That is from pure running and drills they do for practice. The other thing that makes soccer hard is how far you have to run. You can run the entire length of the field throughout the whole game. Soccer fields are also larger than football fields in length and width. One more thing to consider is that EVERYONE on the team needs to be pretty much in the same physical shape and run the same amount. This is why soccer is number 3.

#2 Wrestling

I put wrestling as number 2 because you exert so much energy during a match. The practices are usually 3 hours, and the practices are in gyms with heaters that make the room 105 degrees. You need speed. Full body strength. No matter your size or weight class, you do the same training, and have the same things expected of you. Every person gives the same amount of effort and participation. It is not uncommon to lose 14 pounds every practice in just water weight. The reason I put wrestling as harder than MMA is because in MMA you have the option or ability to knock someone out or make them submit. In wrestling you have no choice but to grapple them, shoot on them, and take them to their back. You must out muscle and outsmart your opponent. There is no easy way around it. You must give everything you got to pin them. Six minutes of wrestling with someone will have you sucking wind.

#1 Ice Hockey

Ice Hockey is in my opinion THE #1 hardest sport to play. In ice hockey you will need to be in tip top shape. Your cardio has to be at a very high level. The whole game you will be skating back and forth and changing directions at 100% speed. Hockey also requires muscular strength. Hockey players are a lot stronger than you think. Most of the players, even the ones that look small weigh over 200 pounds of pure muscle. Hockey requires you to be fast, be able to accurately shoot the puck, be able to catch the puck, be able to read players, agility, endurance, toughness, the ability to jump, hitting power, and not to mention this is all done one Ice skates. Are you kidding me? You take elements from all of the other sports and then you have to do it all standing on two thin blades and standing on ice? There's no way any sport is harder or has better athletes than hockey. If you don't believe so i suggest you go play a local pick up hockey game if possible. Hockey like football and rugby is also a very rough sport do to the hitting or checking involved. While you do wear pads your body is still going to take a beating. I guess at least if you get hit really hard and get a bruise at least you already got ice on it. Oh and one last think. You can fight! That's part of the sport, they let you fight. OK so now you can be at a hockey game and a fight breaks out? and this is perfectly normal? I bet you will never be at a fight and have a hockey game break out. All of these reasons are why I put Ice Hockey at #1

Take the poll!

They didn’t say anything about hitting a ball in tennis which is extremely hard to control but I understand why hockey is number one. Besides that it’s pretty off

what about judo are u guys blem or something like honestly i would give judo #1

What about Rowing?

Hockey is by far number . To questions asked. If u think ANY sport is near it ... U might want to re think your whole life.

Great to see lacrosse make the top 10 list. nice work!

I know people say volleyball is easy to play and takes no athletic ability, but think twice, volleyball is very hard if you wasn't to win. I come home after every tournamentsore from head to toe. I want to proove to my coach I can keep my lebero jersey. Everyone who says volleyball is easy you are wrong.

What about rowing?

Noah on February 04, 2015:

Wrestling is easily the hardest sport, WTF were u thinking when u put hockey b4 it!!!!!try going in 3/4 of a squat and having someone push down on your head for 2 min with 10 sec break, 2 more min, with 10 sec break and then 2 more min. I have wrestled for a long time and im in great shape and I puked my last match because it was so hard, and I run every day of the week in a hot room. And in hockey you skate all out for about 2 sec then u glide, I play that too!and that forward think about how easy it will be for a defensive hockey player they just stand around, and your not even counting the goalie he barely moves!!!! And it hurts so bad when u get put in a hurting move. Ask any good wrestler you know to put you in the banana splits, you will be rolling around for about 5 min, they practically force you to do the splits no matter how flexible!!!!!!

Suzan on January 07, 2015:

I think that rowing should be added to this list because of the harsh demand it puts on the body. Just rowing one 2000 meter race is like playing 2 basketball games back to back

Bob on December 22, 2014:

Where is water polo? It should be on the list!!!!!!!

dulcie on December 14, 2014:

So where is horseriding? We risk our lives everytime we ride with an umpredictable animal.

anon on November 29, 2014:

This is all opinion there's no real way to say which is harder. The skills and the way people train for all these sports are different. They require different abilities and different focuses. Hockey requires a lot while having to skate which is a lot and that makes it hard. Most wrestlers wouldn't be able to skate AND be coordinated. ON the other hand wrestlers have to go through extreme conditioning and cut weight. Something most hockey players don't have to do. Gymanists need to have a lot of flexibility and coordination as well as conditioning, swimming needs a lot of strength, power, and the ability to use these things while not being able to breathe. Each one of these sports has something that the other sport doesn't that's why they exist. If in your opinion one sport is harder than the other fine but that's just it it's YOUR opinion not fact. ESPN can have tests that focus on physical traits but there's more involved than physical traits there's skill. So in my opinion there shouldn't be lists of which sport is harder because there is no real scientific way to judge which one is harder it's all just opinion.

weeeeeeeeeeeeeew on November 20, 2014:

wrestlings the hardest

Daniel on November 11, 2014:

Jean on August 13, 2014:

I couldn't have said that better myself. People just don't understand what wrestlers have to do before they even compete in a match. Wrestlers aren't allowed breaks ever. It's constant hard work for like 3 hours in 100 degree weather. And that's just the easy part. The hardest part is the time and work a wrestler puts in just to make weight. After practice, having to run another few miles. Lifting weights. All of this for months before you even compete against an opponent. Wrestling is by far the most challenging sport. It requires speed, strength, agility, and mental toughness above all things. You can't half ass your way through a match. It's 100% every time you step onto a mat.

Noah on May 05, 2014:

This is beyond isn't shit compared to wrestling. Hockey has the ability to be subbed out, gliding on ice, and timeouts! Not saying it isn't physical of technical, but it just isn't close to wrestling. Let me give you a rundown of a wrestlers day in season. You wake up at five, run for an hour just to burn off a little more weight to be able to snack on a granola bar or an orange! You go to school, exhausted, but you strive to remain focus. Lunch time you watch everyone enjoy their fries, burgers, fats, and calories while you state down a mean dry salad and an apple. You arrive to practice with your best sweats on and a grumbling stomach. You start with light stretching and a mile run, just to start the blood flow. You begin to bake in the 95* degree room as you and your partner drill at 75% then with still about an hour and a half left of practice you start live. It's shark bait, you go for 6 minutes straight, against 3 other sharks who sub out after each takedown. You hear the coach scream faster but you can't imagine faster as the sweat drips down your legs, and that's when you realize you must go faster, not for the coach but for yourself! It's not a fight for someone else, but a fight for yourself. Because you know if you don't move faster that man in front of you will kick your ass and he will do anything and everything possible to make you hurt, intentionally. Now that "practice" is done you get to condition with ladders, sprints, bear crawls, monkey rolls, and core. This is just one day, one of nearly the 100 in a season. But competition is fiercer than any other sport could dream of. You face unknown enemies all of whom have been training for months to break you, break you mentally, physically, and willfully, and when you're broken and it's the 3rd period he will end your dreams of winning the tournament, going to state, continuing your dream, and the only person who can get you there is yourself. There are no assists, there are no passes, there are no teammates! That's why wrestling is the hardest...

no on May 05, 2014:

I think no is an acceptable response to those who think their sport is harder than others. Lets say a cheerleader comes in and says their sport is hard, then a tennis player says theirs is hard. Obviously they are both wrong. Most people will say their sport is easy when they want to get people to play. Then they will tell people that their sport is harder, in an argument about that.

I play golf for UF and if you never tried golf before then shut up it is the most frustrating sport and requires the most skill to be GOOD

Ps We workout with the basketball team and we have to add more weight on the bench when they finish

Mr llama on April 17, 2014:

I do a lot of gymnastics. In the gym i do 15 hours a week during school and 18 during summer. And we aren't even an intense gym. I have friends who do football and gymnastics and they say that gymnastics is way harder. Just watch some stuff people do in the Olympics and tell me that's not hard. If a football player tried to do the stuff i do, they'd get killed. I think gymnastics should be up there in the top 5

Swim_Chick on March 29, 2014:

All sports are hard, but if you want to get opinionated, sure.

Swimming, Gymnastics, and Hockey are BY FAR the hardest. And I don't mean just physically hard.

Let's start with swim. This sport requires soooooo much physical strength. Those of you who think swimming is just riding the waves at the beach You are DEAD WRONG. You football players wouldn't last through even the warmup. Swim challenges all part of your body. We also condition for half our practices, running and doing muscle training. WE HAVE TO DO EVERYTHING UNDERWATER. Has your coach ever told you to literally STOP BREATHING? I didn't think so.

Swim is also the hardest mental sport out there. Once your racing, you can't just ask for a substitution or a break, or have coaches tell you what to do next! It's all up to you.

Also, plenty of kids have injured themselves and swam in races. My teammate broke her arm and swam. Do you know how much casts weigh?

Have a cramp? That's nice, go do an extra 500 fly for whining. We only get 20 sec breaks MAX, so I don't know what you're complaining about...

Okay, why isn't gymnastics even up there? That's just crazy. I only did gymnastics when I was three, but geez, I can't even do a cartwheel!! How do you do that? It requires agility, strength, power, grace, precision, on top of everything that other sports need. Uh... During a gym push up

/curlup test who beats all of you? Oh yeah, a gymnast.

Ice hockey. For those who think it is easier than football, you need to get your eyes checked. Hello?!?!?

I have a friend who plays hockey, and WOW the dedication is extraordinary. From right after school, to ten at night, and her rink is an hour away! She can't remember the last time she had a friend over, or been to a school dance in three years. Yet, she's still a straight A student. I don't know how she does it...

So yeah. No matter what you say, I won't change my mind. Please note that these are my OPINIONS, so don't viciously type comments football players...;D

sport on March 25, 2014:

I think tennis is one of the hardest and saying you only use some parts of your body is RUBBISH. You have to train all parts of your legs for power , arms , shoulders, core and you have to be able to run around for a very long time. Also you are on your own you can't relie on any one else if you our having a bad day. It is supper quick and you constantly focused on the ball. You also have to anticipate where the opponent is going to hit the ball.

Mick on February 10, 2014:

Boxing/mma = #1. The rest of you can fight it out for all the rest.

Hockey on February 06, 2014:

Follow up from te last comment posted. In hockey you also practice from 1-20 hours a week, on some occasions more. I once went to 13 hours of practice in two days from camps and team practices . Practices can go from 1 hour to 3 and a half, and there are can be multiple practices a day. The warm ups and conditioning hockey players have to do is quite tiring. You do footwork drills (ladders, hurdles, etc.) and running tests (beep tests, laps on track, etc) you lift weights, do walls sits, lunges, squats, push-ups, sit-ups, crunches, bench dips, plank, leg lifts. Etc.

Anonymous on February 06, 2014:

It's true hockey is #1. As a player you have to have strength, flexibility, balance, endurance. You have to be able to skate, stop, and start moving quickly, you have to be able to cut around players, shoot, stickhandle, and know where you are supposed to be. As a goalie you have to have very good balance, leg strength, great core, and arm strength too, you have to be able to slide on the ice quickly without Falling over, and get up lightning fast. You have to know angles, how far out you should be from the net. You have to know where the puck is going to go and when, and you have to know where every one is. You also have to know how far you should crouch, whether you should stand up or go into butterfly position. You have to stay square to the puck, and move with it too.As a player, you play for most of the game in 30-45 second shifts, and as a goalie you are playing the whole 60 minutes. In hockey you can easily get cuts, bruises, cramps, sore muscles, messed up ligaments and limbs. You can break bones, get cuncussions, and tear muscles. If you pull a muscle or get a cramp, you have to work through te pain and keep playing anyway. You always have calluses on your hands and feet, and can easily get blisters too. Hockey is definitely the 1# hardest sport

Kyle wentsworth on February 06, 2014:

Alright this list is terrible.

I feel like people always try to buff their sport to be the hardest out there.

Okay so nascar intense and all bit it doesn't take strength stamina, or endurance. This list is about hardest sports to play not dangerous or skilled. Where's motocross? Rowing? I mean why is golf up there, they are too lazy to carry their own bags that they have people to carry it for them. Volleyball? Why the hell is that up there. The toughest sports are the ones where you can't stop until it's over. Football has breaks so even though it's rough, you aren't moving the whole time I think it's fairly ranked. Baseball? You barely even run! Things like swimming motor cross rowing are the kind of sports where you can't stop until your done. No time outs or substitutions or changing players on the team. This list is bullshit

anonymous on February 04, 2014:

First off, swimming is obviously the hardest, with an exception of some of the male sports. Swimming requires stamina, power, strength, mentality, calming of nerves, and more. I don't know about others, but speaking for myself, I through a three hour practice in the afternoon combined with a two hour practice in the morning waking up at 4:30 am. EVERYDAY.

'nough said.

P.s. why is golf on the list? Someone who plays golf tells me that it doesn't require stamina, endurance, power etc. at all...hmmm.

My opinion on December 21, 2013:

I don't think that espn has it right. The ranking for soccer should be higher then both basketball and baseball, because I've played all of them and soccer is definitely the hardest. And to the person who said that soccer is easy you just need high fitness anyone can build up their fitness.I definitely agree with the statement. Anyone CAN. But no one does. Know why? Because its hard!. In soccer you can run up to 9.5 miles per game, and In sports like basketball a player would only run up to 2.5 miles. And yes in basketball you need agility, but you are just catching and throwing and dribbling and shooting a ball with your hands. Which is a whole lot easier than passing and dribbling and shooting with your feet, while also weaving around players. Which I think requires more agility then using your feet to move and your arms to control the ball. And to the person who said that basketball players need to play both offence and defense, have you ever heard of midfielders? I agree with most of this list, but I must say that water polo is harder than soccer. I went to one practice with my friend who plays and it was incredibly difficult. But honestly the football and baseball players who say they're sports are harder just bug me. In baseball you spend half the time waiting around, and when you finally do sprint it is no great distance. You have to sprint farther than that to get from half to the box in soccer when you're defending. And football players only run about 1 mike per game, what with all the rests. You make the ball do the work.

madison on November 20, 2013:

I'm not saying volleyball is the the hardest sport, but it ahould be ranked higher than some of the sports there. There is a huge difference between club or sometimes highschool to a rec league. Competitive volleyball uses a lot of endurance. You are expected yo last all day working your absolute hardest keep the ball in play.I haven't played all the sports on thsy list, but the ones ohave played are not as hard as volleyball

iguidenetwork from Austin, TX on November 13, 2013:

I've tried tennis once and I thought that it would be as much easy as playing badminton. But man, it was hard! You must run that fast to be able to hit the ball -- or is that my age hindering me to do so? Hehehehe. Nice hub there, great work.

karol on September 30, 2013:

Have you checked up hurling? I am not sure at which spot it should be,, but surely it is one of the most challenging sports.

Jane on September 28, 2013:

What about cross country. That's the hardest

Avinesh Prahladi from Chandigarh on September 24, 2013:

I totally agree with you, HeavyGuns, these are some of the hardest sports. Well, if you are playing a particular sport for many years and you are getting trained for that day and night, then obviously it will seem easier to play that particular sport as compared to the other games which you haven't played. Yes, every game requires some particular skills and I believe every game can be mastered by the time.

Australian football for sure. much like NFL just no breaks between plays and no pads.

Precious Sanders from Kansas on September 08, 2013:

I'm curious about your definition of what qualifies as a "sport." I have to agree with the folks who've mentioned gymnastics... I was genuinely surprised not to find it on the list.

kevin on September 05, 2013:

to all you idiots saying gymmastics is more difficult than hockey... put on a pair of skates with blades that are 2 inches and go on the ice, yes ICE, for even 10 mins going as fast as a f'ing car with the power of 2 football players the hands of a brain sergeon and the hand eye of a baseball player. ON ICE!!! And think about a goalie... yeah that's 3 sports and 1 of the hardest proffesians in the world that takes about 7 years to learn and put that all together on ice with giant equipment and a stick. So yeah i would say hockey is the hardest sport on earth. If you think im wrong, try and top me!

Polocrosse Hockey on horse back)? Cross country (Created by the Military)? Dressage (Dancing with a horse using your legs to communicate)?

And everyone ignores us when we clearly are MORE than a sport, we are the people who have spirit in their BLOOD! Our world was built on horse back and if people ignore horses now then I never want the future to come.

Anonymous on June 23, 2013:

This list is crap. Most of the things the person said about soccer can be said about all sports. Also why does basketball get no respect? To be a basketball player, you HAVE to play both offense and defense. There's running, jumping, and cutting (what was said to make soccer so tough). Also people look at the NBA to point out faults in basketball when the NBA anymore isn't good basketball, just good athletes. Real basketball requires teamwork and doesn't involve standing around. Plus it's the only sport I know of where there's a hight requirement so not everyone can be a great basketball player while anyone can build up great endurance (which makes soccer so hard right?) I bet most the people that say basketball is easy or hate basketball are a bunch of bitter short people

Soccer on June 21, 2013:

-Gymnastics should be 1

-People who say soccer doesn't deserve to be here are stupid... Look at our legs, we have to run 90 minutes with one tiny break. You also get hits and tons of us get injured way more often than crappy football players who think they're so tough.

-Hockey is pretty tough

-I've swam and it's HARD.

-I agree with the ranking area for soccer but gymnastics and swimming should be higher and on and tennis should be switched with golf.

Dejan,Serbia on June 10, 2013:

fuck you over America, and that ESPN is a popular sport in America and who is not. I'm from Europe. I have trained more than 15 sports in my 34 years and I can confirm that the worst wrestling. In my country, soccer is much more popular than wrestling, and therefore is in a better level and I say with certainty that wrestling is the hardest .... That's what it says Espn'm not interested. They can not know better than us who have practiced the sport and you determine what is the most difficult. Sorry for my bad English. And sorry for for ordinary Americans.

Thea on June 09, 2013:

What about gymnastics? Gymnastics and swimming are BY FAR the hardest sports out there because they require a person to use EVERY muscle in their body.

Swimming on June 02, 2013:

I have a few things to say. Gymnastic is hard. I can agree with that. But those of you who say swimming is easy, you are probably talking about summer swim lessons. In one day of high school swimming we swim more then 1000 meters. And we barely get more then a minute of rest. So if anyone one will dis swimming, I dare you to try a high school team! It is Much harder then you think. I am talking to you, Meganthegymnast.

Chris on May 31, 2013:

Why is Formula 1 not on here?! I'm sorry but hitting every apex for 2.5 hours averaging over 100 MPH, all the while every single time you brake or turn a corner you weigh up to 3-6 times your own body weight because of the G's? THAT physically taxing! To put that into perspective, a driver probably weighs up to 200 pounds, in the fastest corners or hardest breaking point that means you weigh up to a half a ton, and you have to hold yourself up while thinking about what gear you should be in, how much pressure you should be putting on the brake/gas as to not lock up the brakes or spin out, and it lasts for 2 1/2 hours. That to me is absolutely astonishing and should be up there as far as difficulty.

Come on. Really? Have you even played volleyball? It looks easy because we MAKE it look easy. And some agility! We have to know where the ball is coming from and where to dig it when it's coming 50 mph over a net and if the blocker will touch it. We have to know where to go when to go and when to call it and if the ball is ours to pass. Volleyball requires more than just "some" agility and "some" physical movement. It's not some game you can play in your backyard and think you can play good. You have to be athletic, know what to do, and so much more. Volleyball is so much more than what you say it is. And really, you can't judge a sport by looking at the people play. YOU have to play for yourself and see the conditioning we do and how much effort we give. We have to move at 100% speed so we can pass the ball correctly. One millimeter off and the whole play is ruined.

Where is iron man training!!!!!!! they do Swimming, Running, and biking!!!!! Where is biking also. Gym honestly is the hardest known to science facts!!!But I honestly think it matters how much of an effort you give.

W on May 21, 2013:

Horseback riding without a doubt. Physically and mentally is the most demanding. If you think that controlling a 1200 pound animal with a mind of it's own is an easy thing to do you're insane. Remember this is an animal that can kill you within two seconds. You don't have pads, or time outs, or sit out due to injury, you suffer through it. It is incredibly dangerous. I fractured my kneecap from falling off and had to get back on and ride for another 30 minutes. Also, i am pretty sure its the only sport where you have to have your medical info strapped to your arm

how long can you hold your breath? while giving 100% effort? Swimming is the only sport where you get YELLED AT for breathing. also, swimming is the sport that required the highest level of confidence and mental strength. if you are not mentally as well as physically strong enough, i can promise you that you would not make it through 30 minutes out of my 3 hour practice.

Luther on April 18, 2013:

Swimming is the most physically demanding sport easy. 3 hour practices with breaks of 20 seconds at max. 5-7 miles a DAY! It requires extremely high mental fortitude and physical fitness not one or the other.

Will Matz on April 18, 2013:

Swimming should be #1. Until all you football players or baseball players try to swim 7 miles a day or practice 9 times a week you have no idea how hard it is

waterpolo is # 1 on March 01, 2013:

Water polo should definitely be number 1 and for all of you who say swimming is easy you obviously don't swim because it is no where near easy. I swim and play water polo and I have played a lot of other sports and they are by far the hardest. Water polo has swimming, wrestling underwater, a lot of uncalled fowls cuz the refs can see what people are doing and you also have to pay attention to the ball and all the other players in the pool.

Horses r my life on January 07, 2013:

REALLY! No one mentioned horse riding?!?! It is definitely the hardest sports . Have u ever fallen 7ft up at 35 mph have u ever been stomped on by a 2000 pound animal have u ever felt like a butterfly wold determin if it's a ride through the woods or a ride to the hospital ya football is hard baseball swimming soccer are to but no sport involves an ANIMAL with a mind of its own. SO SAY WHAT U THINK ABOUT MY COMMENT!!

Farcry3 on December 20, 2012:

Wrestling is way harder than swimming....

Mitchy the swimmer on December 02, 2012:

I think swimming should be number one. First it burns the most calories, no breaks for you football players out there. I used to play water polo and honestly it wasn't as physically demanding as a 10 thousand yard swim practice. As for the gymnasts I think depending on your level it can be extremely hard just like swimming. I don't know about u guys but after watching first position I think ballet should be up there. The people practice 5 hours plus and mangle their feet beyond repair and I know someone will kill me for saying this but are also the most flexible. Srsly watch the movie

Yup on October 27, 2012:

Julian on October 02, 2012:

Surfing is a pretty tough sport. You have to have strong arms to paddle through the water and waves crashing around you. You have to have strong legs to stand up and carve through the water. And you have to have good balance. Not to mention you gotta be a good swimmer. Surfing isn't the hardest sport but it should be on this list because it takes dedication and lots of energy to do it.

Jaden on September 13, 2012:

I don't think football is very tough because they get a break every four downs

sam on September 13, 2012:

Yes boxing is the hardest sport in the would followed by hockey and then football and then basketball and then wrestling that is what ESPN said and i believe ESPN.

Jaden on September 13, 2012:

Boxing= hardest

hockey on September 13, 2012:

Ya hockey is harder mma and hockey are so different for a other so just stop it hockey and mma are both hard.

So hockey is harder for so many resources. Mma is cool and hard but hockey is harder ESPN says so and no matter what you says about mma being harder then hockey does not matter hockey is harder then mma ESPN says so and i believe them and not you.

Jaden on September 13, 2012:

Are u stupid? In mma your r constantly moving and yea there's only one person to blame if u make mistake and that's yourself.

hockey on September 13, 2012:

And you no what happens wen you relie on your teammates you lose if 1 player does 1 thing wrong it can affect your hole team hockey is a team effect if 1 player 1player screws up you can lose. single sports are not harder then team sports you have on idea you are 1 f up loses. O and if hockey players did not have breaks there heats would explode and you are always moving in hockey and it is 3x harder to skate then to run and in mma you are not constantly moving so no you have no idea what the hell you are taking about

Jaden on September 13, 2012:

Ya that sounds about right i do not no much about mma but i no a lot about hockey and wrestling and those are the hardest sports hockey is probably 1 and for number 2 mma or wrestling i think wrestling but like i said i do not no much about mma so.

1skating so hard

2 skating backwards

3 soothing accurately

4 soothing hard

5 hitting hard

6 being able to teak a hard hit

7skating fastest

8 playing goalie is the hardest position in all of sports

9 position

sam on September 13, 2012:

No ESPN says the same ting that boxing is 1 hockey is 2 football is3 basketball is 4 and wrestling is5 ESPNs list hasn't changed at all and just because hockey does not hurt as much doesn't mean it is not harder. hockey is a team sport and mma and wrestling are not and wen you try to score a goal they are trying to hit you and if your on the other team you are trying to stop the puck and it huts a lot. You have no idea what the hell you are taking about mma and wrestling are not as hard as hockey ESPNs list is the same look up 4hardest sport and it is the top of the websites. ESPN hasn't ganged anything on their list and hockey is harder then wrestling and mma hands up and down. Only people that have played reel hockey would understand.

West coast on September 13, 2012:

In my opinion I believe mma is they hardest sport your getting punched and kicked in the face and also in hockey the goal is not to hurt someone but to make a goal and in wrestling is to make the most points. But in mma the goal is knock the other person out

Jaden on September 13, 2012:

Espns research was wrong, they even said so a week later that the test they were redoing we're not accurate so I believe mma is way harder and to me I believe wrestling and hockey are tied.

halo king on September 12, 2012:

Hockey wrestling no hockey is way harder then wrestling. I play hockey and wrestling and hockey is harder skating is so hard way do you think they have 3 to 4 lines because it is so hard to skate it is about 3 to 4x harder to skate then to run. And in hockey you have to be reel strong and quick be able to shoot a puck fast and lift it off the ice and be able to shoot accurately. And be able to hit hard and be able to take a hard hit do not even start saying this and that about wrestling you just do not understand. ESPN says that hockey is harder then wrestling and they are right and your not i m saying this from personal experience that hockey is harder and not wrestling ESPN of crying out loud says that hockey is harder then wrestling believe them they are experts on sports they no what the hell they are taking about.

hockey on September 12, 2012:

You would get dropped if you played high school hockey they would f you up so bad you would be on the ice bleeding crying and throwing up with so many broken bones in your body you would need a stretcher. You would be in a wheelchair for the rest of your life.

sam on September 12, 2012:

That is your opinion that wrestling is more fun then hockey. And yes we have to cut weight. What do you think we hockey players are doing siting around at practise it is 3x harder to skate then to run. We have to do a 30 min run and a 6 min lag lift and 100 situps and poshups and a banish of other tings all before practice and then go on the ice and start a 75 min practice. Do not tell me that we do not work hard you do not no what the hell you are taking about we work hard to win high school hockey reeley hard. All the players won't to win to see the trophy in they school. So shut the f up if you say hockey is easy you have no idea whet the hell you are taking about.

bill is bill on September 12, 2012:

Hockey players aren't built like wrestlers so what. And we never said that wrestling sucks we just said that hockey is harder then wrestling and it is. Stop getting so offended. And wrestlers and hockey players in a fight i do not no how would win hockey players can fight good and so can wrestlers and what does it matter i liked wrestling but then i played hockey and i fell in love with it. O and hockey is like the biggest winter olympic sport and hockey has a hole country devoted to it Canada that is all they play. So just stop fighting plz this is about the hardest sport. And i think it is hockey.

hockey on September 12, 2012:

Sorry but ESPN says that mma is like number 4 or 6 and wrestling is number 5 and hockey is number 2. And ESPN is right and your not

You can play hockey but not wrestling what ever if i can't play wrestling then you can't play hockey. And you do not get concussions as often in wrestling you get way more concussions in hockey hockey is harder faster and more dangerous then wrestling. In wrestling all you do is grab and throw eachother on the ground and it looks a little gay.
