Preview: Who Are the Favorites for the 2021 Tour De France?

The 108th edition of the Tour de France is scheduled for 26 June to 18 July 2021. Who are the favorites for the greatest cycling race in the world?

Tadej Pogacar was born on 21 September 1998 in Komenda (Slovenia). His nickname is Pogi. He won the 2018 Tour de L'Avenir (Tour of the Future), the most famous race for young talents. In 2019 he was a very impressive rookie in the world of pro cycling. He was the youngest cyclist ever to win a World Tour Stage Race when he won the 2019 Tour of California. His debut Grand Tour was the 2019 Vuelta Ciclista a Espana (Spain). Pogacar won three stages and finished third in the overall classification.

Tadej Pogacar amazed the cycling world in the summer of 2020. He rode the Tour de France for the first time and became the winner of the overall classification (yellow jersey), the mountains classifications (polka dot jersey), the young rider classification (white jersey) and three stages. Pogacar became the second youngest winnner ever of the Tour de France (after Henri Cornet who won in 1904). For many cyclingfans Pogacar is the big favorite in the 2021 Tour de France.

Primož Roglic was born on 29 October 1989 in Trbovlje (Slovenia, Yugoslavia). He was a talented ski jumper. In 2012 he shifted to cycling. Roglic became one of the greatest cyclist in the world. He won the Vuelta a Espana (2019 and 2020), the Tour de Romandie (2018 and 2019), Tirreno-Adriatico (2019), the Tour of the Basque Country (2018) and Liège-Bastogne-Liège (2020). Roglic was one of the favorites for the 2020 Tour de France. He rode strong and wore the jellow jersey for many days. Ultimately he lost to his compatriot Tadej Pogacar. Roglic is seeking for revenge in the 2021 Tour de France.

Geraint Thomas and Richard Carapaz

Geraint Thomas (Wales) and Richard Carapaz (Ecuador) are the leaders of the very strong Team Ineos in the 2021 Tour de France.

Thomas has won the 2018 Tour de France and was second in the 2019 Tour. Carapaz has won the 2021 Giro and was second in the 2020 Vuelta. They aren't considered the favorites to win the 2021 Tour, but they'll definitely play a big role in the race with the extremely strong Team Ineos.

Christopher Clive Froome was born 20 May 1985 in Nairobi (Kenya). This British cycling champion has won four editions of the Tour de France (2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017). He has won de Vuelta twice (2011 and 2017) and the Giro once (2018). Chris Froome is the most successful cyclist of his generation. On 12 June 2019 he was hospitalised after a high-speed horror-crash into a wall while training. It seems he never really recovered from those injuries. That's why many people don't think he's one of the favorites for the 2021 Tour de France. But maybe this experienced cycling champion can amaze the world with a ressurection in the 2021 season.

Bernal? No Tour in 2021

Egan Arley Bernal Gómez was born 13 January 1997 in Bogota (Colombia). He was very talented at mountain biking, getting silver (2014) and bronze (2015) in the Junior Mountain Bike World Championships. Later on he focused on road racing. In 2016 Egan Bernal was signed to the Italian Androni Giacattoloi Team. He began racing among the pro elites straight way, bypassing the usual 'U23' career route. Bernal won the 2017 Tour L'Avenir. Many World Tour Teams wanted to contract him. He decided to move to Team Sky for the 2018 season.

His first wins in the UCI World Tour were two stages and the overall classification in the 2018 Tour of California. Bernal was a very impressive domestique in the 2018 Tour de France for his team leaders Froome and Thomas. The young Colombian was the co-leader in the team for the 2019 Tour de France (together with Thomas), because of absence of Froome (who was injured). He won the overal classification of the 2019 Tour de France, becoming the first Latin American to win the greatest cycling race in the world. The 2020 Tour de France was a dissapointing experience. He dropped out of the race because of a back injury. Bernal was facing months of rehabilitation after being diagnosed with scoliosis.

He dediced not to ride the 2021 Tour de France. His main goals in the 2021 are Giro and the Vuelta. Bernal rode a strong 2021 Giro d'Italia and won the General Classification.

Evenepoel? No 2021 Tour de France

Remco Evenepoel was born 25 january 2000. He was called 'The Wonderboy of Cycling' and 'The New Eddy Merckx'. He'll won't ride the 2021 Tour de France. His main goals in the 2021 season are the Giro d'Italia and the Olympics.
