This weekend was the NFL Draft where teams selected players fresh out of college to help improve their teams. There were a lot of surprising picks but I am here to discuss how the Patriots draft went. We had some good picks and questionable picks. Here are each of their selections and how I felt about them.
Round 1 Pick 15
After the Bears traded up with the Giants to select Justin Fields this was the best move for the Patriots to make. Originally I didn’t like the move because I really Justin Fields but Mac Jones is a decent prospect. He has decent accuracy and his few knockoffs is that he is not very mobile. The Patriots had a dynasty with a non mobile QB in Tom Brady so if anyone can make it work they can. I expect him to fully take over the team in a year or two.
Round 2 Pick 38
I REALLY LOVED THIS PICK!!!!!! I was expecting Barmore to be gone in the first one since he was one of the most talented D-Line players in the draft but he fell to the second round and the Pats traded up to get him. The Patriots are building a scary defense and strengthening that D-Line is a great step. He will do a great job in generating pressure in the middle.
Round 3 Pick 96
Another pick to strengthen that D-Line. He could stay at edge rusher or maybe become a linebacker but he will join a defense group that gets back Donta Hightower and added Matthew Judon in the offseason. He will make his presence felt no matter where he is at despite a short season in Oklahoma.
Round 4 Pick 120
I was very confused about this pick. The Patriots already have Sony Michel, James White, Damien Harris, and other RBs on the roster so I don’t see the value in this pick. The Patriots seem to like Damien Harris a lot when he had some good games last year but this team is a run by committee so you never now who will have the hot hand every week. So adding to an already crowded RB room is very confusing.
Round 5 Pick 177
Another pick to add to the LB core. This was pretty much a depth pick to add to a LB core that has Donta Hightower and newly added Matthew Judon.
Round 6 Pick 188
With Devin McCourty getting high in age and Patrick Chung retired they needed to draft some safety help and they did just that. He will get the opportunity to learn from D Mac and be a part of the revamped Pats D.
Round 6 Pick 197
Another depth pick but this time for the O-Line. They still have one of the best O-Lines in the league despite losing Thuney. This will add to a very good rotation of O-Lineman in NE.
Round 7 Pick 242
I wish the Pats drafted Cornell Powell in the draft but at least they added some depth for the improved WR core. This WR core struggled last year but with moves to add Nelson Agholor and Kendrick Bourne it has improved. Hopefully Nkeal Harry can make that leap to become the number option the Patriots hoped he would be after they drafted him in the first round a few years back.
That was my recap of the Patriots draft and I am really looking forward to the season!!!!!! There was some picks I believe they should have made but I am happy with the draft. On to the regular season!!!!
