Mitzi Mueller, British Pro Lady Wrestler
While their promotions over there may not have been as big as the major professional wrestling promotions in the United States, wrestling in the United Kingdom has just as long and colorful history as the pro wrestling promotions do here in the United States.
British pro wrestling got it's big boost back in 1955 when the Independent Television station (ITV) began showing matches on Saturday mornings, then again during the week, late at night.
Of course like here in the US, they had their share of female wrestlers.
One of the biggest names in the early days of the sport was Miss Mitzi Mueller (sometimes spelled Muller) who ranks right up there with American female pro wrestling legends like Mildred Burke, June Byers and the Fabulous Moolah.
Mitzie was trained by her father, pro wrestler Joe Connolly and she made her pro wrestling debut at the age of fourteen in 1963.
In the 1970s she wrestled for promotions like All Star and took on opponents like Hellcat Haggerty.
Similar to parts of the United States, Britain had a ban on lady wrestlers for awhile (in London) and Mitzi (along with her partner Rusty Blair) were the first ladies ever to wrestle in a big venue after the ban was lifted, taking on Klondyke Kate and Nicky Monroe at the Royal Albert Hall in 1987.
Besides the UK, Mitzi wrestled all over Europe, working in Turkey, Sweden, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, France, Oman and Germany.
She won the British Ladies championship in 1972 and the European Ladies championship in 1975, a title that she held on to until 1990.
Sadly though she never made it to the United States.
I would have loved to see her go up against some of the greats here in the US.
Besides wrestling, Mitzi did some acting as well.
Okay...I know there is acting involved in wrestling but these we straight acting roles.
She appeared in British TV shows like Help!, Hallelujah!, Testimony, Minder and the cult hit, Red Dwarf.
Mitzi married All Star wrestling promoter Brian Dixon and they now run a wrestling school at the Bebington Civic Centre called All Star Training School.
They are involved heavily in Breast Cancer research funding and they have used wrestling events to raise money for the cause, specifically The Lily Centre, which is run by women who have themselves experienced breast cancer.
Brian and Mitzi have a daughter Laetitia, who is a ring announcer for the All Star promotion.
