Raise your own Live Bait for Fishing

Using live bait for fishing is a great way to catch some nice fish. Nightcrawlers are a favorite with many fishermen. But did you know that you can raise your own nightcrawlers? Yep, and it is easier than you might think.

All you have to do is think about what it costs you to lose a nice lure as compared to losing a worm.

The Material for your Nightcrawler Bin

There are several ways that you can raise nightcrawlers and have live bait for fishing excursions. A crawler bin is one way that you can do it right at your own home. There are a few different types of bins you can use. One way is to use a half wine barrel that you fill with a good quality soil. You can also use a wooden planter.

It is best to steer clear of any unnatural materials. It is best not to use plastic or metal. These types of bins are not the best place for your nightcrawlers because they are prone to heating up to fast and reaching a temperature not suitable for growth of nightcrawlers. Don’t forget that they like to live in the dark so using any material that is transparent is not suggested.

Where to place your Nightcrawler Bin

One of the best places to keep your nightcrawler bin is buried in the ground. This helps guarantee that the crawlers are in a location that they like. If you keep it close to your house it makes it easy to grab some for your fishing excursion. Make sure that the soil in the bin does not go all the way to the top or your worms just might make an escape.

Feeding your Nightcrawlers

Feeding your nightcrawlers is a breeze. They will eat all your scraps like a garbage disposal. You can throw in your vegetable and fruit peelings and scraps. You can also add lawn trimmings but this is best to do only if your grass has no chemicals on it.

If you want some help there are many companies that supply food supplements and bedding. Doing it yourself is more economical but this is another possible way to keep your nightcrawlers happy.

Live Bait for Fishing Update

I've had a huge success with my live bait for fishing this year. My success has been in how my nightcrawlers have done so well and how my fishing this spring and summer has been great.

I like to think that my fishing with nightcrawlers is because I have raised a great bunch of them and that I am superb at fishing. A fishing match made in heaven. It may be a combination of those things but I imagine some luck played into it also.

Have any of you had great success with using your own live bait for fishing? Let's hear some success stories!

Fishing trip this weekend. Live bait here I come. I'm already having trouble sleeping and I have 3 more days to go!

Thanks tinavita. I see the fishing fanatics are uniting. I love fishing with live bait. There's just something about a squishy worm. I would rather fish with a worm than a minnow!

I love fishing too and have always liked using nightcrawlers for bait. Not sure if I want to raise the little suckers but it's a good article and something to think about.
