Fans for both the Denver Nuggets and Portland Trail Blazers have to be excited after game 1.
Damian Lillard proved to be too much for the Denver Nuggets to handle in game 1 of the Western Conference First round of the playoffs.
Analysts are already starting to digest what happened in the game and why the Blazers were so successful in game 1. The game was statistically lopsided in favor of the Blazers. The Blazers dominated from 3-point range, making 6 more attempts than the Nuggets. With Jamal Murray out due to injury, this was to be expected going into the series.
The Blazers played better defense than usual. Jokic was not able to get others involved and only had 1 assist in the game. However, he was still able to score 34 points. Jokic is expected by many to be the 2020-21 NBA MVP for how he carried the Nuggets after Murray’s injury. Not only did he not miss any regular season games, but his play was exemplary in getting others on his team involved. He is a model for how NBA players should play the game of basketball.
The Blazers' success in game one, however, was largely due to their bench. Their bench outscored Denver's bench by 14 points. And this was the margin of victory for the game. Carmelo Anthony, who scored 18 points in game one, was a big part of it. One could argue that the Blazers could not have defeated the Nuggets without Anthony.
The Blazers fared much better in the second half than they did in the first. In the second half, they outscored the Nuggets by 17 points. Towards the end of the fourth quarter, ardent Nuggets fans started to question their ability to recover. However, with Jokic anything is possible. And, given everything that has happened this season, this is undeniably true.
Portland fans should continue to support the Blazers this season, as they have the potential to make a deep playoff run. Unlike many other NBA teams, the Blazers are healthy, experienced, and cohesive. The Los Angeles Lakers' season is in doubt, and the Utah Jazz are without Point-Guard Donovan Mitchell. And this is the Phoenix Suns' first playoff appearance for many of their players.
The Blazers should continue their winning ways in game 2 and take a two-game lead over the Nuggets. The Nuggets will undoubtedly want to win big in game 2. The Blazers must be ready for anything. However, as Portland Fans know, Dame D.O.L.L.A is capable of waving the Nuggets off in a series clincher.
