How Good Is It In Noise Cancelling?

When you’re buying a hearing protection, obviously the first thing you would consider how good it is in filtering out harmful noises. Before discussing how well it is in noise cancelling.

Let’s check out what is considered excessive noise?

Typically, excessive noise is defined as 85-90 decibels or more over 8 hour period. Here are some examples of noise levels considered harmful by the experts are lawnmower, a rock concert, firearms, firecrackers, tractors, power tools, and industrial machinery. All of theses can deliver sounds in excess of 90 decibels; even some of them deliver up to 140 decibels.

The Howard Leight R-01526 automatically blocks the noises in excess of 82 decibels. With a noise reduction rating: NRR 22. Now, how this noise reduction rating is calculated?

In simple word, as specified by the Environment Protection Agency, noise reduction rating (NRR) is the measurement, in decibel, of how well a hearing protection device is, in blocking noises. The higher the NRR number the greater the noise reduction.

And these shooting headphones come with a noise reduction rating NRR 22. Therefore, does this mean it will block the sounds above 22 decibels? No. In fact, while you are wearing these ear muffs your exposure to the noise is equal the actual noise minus 22. For example, if you’re exposed to 90 dB of noise and you’re wearing these ear muffs then your actual exposure will be 90-22=68 dB.

But being an electronic hearing protection, it works more than just a regular ear muff. It has directional microphones that listen first, and amplify the sounds below 82 dB, so while wearing these you can naturally listen and communicate, but for protection when the ambient sounds reach in excess of 82 dB this will effectively block all those harmful sounds.

A Brilliant Design

Without doubt, being the best ear protection for shooting for the price, it comes with a brilliant design. Their low profile design with cut-outs allows full clearance of firearm stock, and that eliminate interference while shooting.

In fact, they are adjustable the way you like and very comfortable to wear. Even they fold nicely into a small bundle. Therefore, they are super easy to store and carry around.

The volume knob is nicely placed where it need to be. Therefore, it is extremely easy to locate and operate.

Overall, the design of this electronic ear muffs is very professional, nice looking, and the way it works brilliant.

Do You Own Howard Leight R-01526 Impact Sport Electronic Earmuff?

Consumer on August 29, 2016:

These don't "block" sounds over 82DB, they just stop amplifying when a noise over 82DB is detected. The NRR is 22. The active part has nothing to do with noise reduction, it's amplification of quiet noises so you can hear things like voices and such with them on, but when a loud noise over 82DB is detected, they turn off the amplification. The number to pay attention to is 22NRR
