Introduction

The Fencers Club of New York has been around since 1883. It is the oldest continuous operating non-profit fencing club in America. Over its long history, it has moved about every ten years or so for various reasons. This year in 2021, we have finally found a home we own in the heart of Manhattan. This is due mostly to the generosity of our benefactor and long time member Jamie Melcher. His dream of a home for our club is finally realized. After years of planning and start stop and setbacks, we have done it.

Under the leadership of our current Chairman of the Board, Philippe Bennett, and a board of 18 members, under difficult circumstance of the pandemic, we have finally completed the renovation of this world class facility.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was conducted last week and we are open for business. We have a membership of over 500 with ages from 8 to over 80.

The COVID19 virus has created some new challenges for us. We have risen to the challenge with a facility of over 9600 sq ft of space. With 22 advanced engineered grounded strips, superior LED lighting, top of the line HVAC system with HEPA filtration and a ceiling with anti-virus paint.

We have ten of the top coaches in our country with three weapons foil, epee and saber.

About Fencers Club: Fencers Club is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to the pursuit of excellence through the sport of fencing. Fencers Club is a uniquely wonderful place where people of all ages, backgrounds, and beliefs can fence, learn, share resources, and make life-long friends. Fencers Club has a long tradition of producing outstanding scholar-athletes and life-long learners.

The Fencers Club will be joined by members of the Peter Westbrook Foundation and continue to be the site of the Peter Westbrook Foundation’s Saturday Fencing Program —the cornerstone of all the PWF programs. It includes basic and advanced fencing instruction as well as all academic programs for the underserved.

The Fencers Club’s coaches have trained fencers to become Olympians (including medalists) and World Team members (all categories). Our mission is to:

  • To provide the highest level of instruction and state-of-the-art facilities for the sport of fencing.
  • To promote the social and athletic interactions of our members through the sport of fencing.
  • To produce fencers of Olympic caliber through the active sponsorship of world-class training programs, competitions, and teams.
