A New Proposal For The Sport of Fencing

I am retired and a former epee fencer at CCNY Varsity and USFA. I have achieved the rank of A and have competed in National tournament.

The sport of fencing hasn't changed much in over 50 years. The last major innovation was electrifying the scoring system. With the advent of wireless technology, we are on the cusp of a new fencing format. One that free us from the fixed strip format.

Here is a proposal for a new form of fencing, one that is free format and with very few rules.

- Sept. 2020

The traditional strips were created to allow for easy harness attachment with reels. Since wireless technology has eliminated the reels, we can consider a different configuration. One that is more free format and perhaps more realistic.

The size of the current strip is 14m long by 1.5m wide, or 21 sq meters in area. What if we change this to a 6m diameter circle which will approx. be 28 sq meters.

Add a center column of 30 cm diameter and 2m tall to mark the center point.

New Fencing Area

Simple Rules...

  • current Epee rules apply
  • Both feet outside of circle lose a touch.
  • No turn your back to opponent - yellow card warning.
  • No physical contact with your opponent's weapon or body, unless a hit.
  • 3 minutes per period with 1 minute rest.

New Possibilities...

A new class of fencing can be established, called free format fencing. This will require the use of wireless scoring technology. It does not limit competition to indoors only. This format will attract kids of all ages to start and perhaps use a modified weapon as introduction to the sport. This practice weapon would be lighter and less rigid. In fact, the current VSM system allows for players to use a foil to fence epee. This version of VSM call Epee Lite will do just that. The lighter weapon is more suitable for kids.

This idea is a way to introduce the sport of fencing to the masses. It can help proliferate the sport and allow people to fence in their backyards and driveways. The free format is a more realistic rendition of sword fighting as in the movies, the Three Musketeers. The key to the success is a low cost entry version of wireless scoring technology and modified weapons and equipment gear. A simple plastic face mask and leather glove and a foil can work without heavy uniforms.
