What will the Rapture be like?

Why I'm making this page about what the rapture will be like:

The Bible plainly teaches that there will be a rapture of all those who have placed their trust in Jesus Christ. This is the glorious hope which believers have to look forward to. But have you ever wondered what the rapture will actually be like? I have, and thus, I'm making this page on "The rapture: What will it be like?" First we'll examine the scriptural basis for the rapture. Then I have posed a few questions which have come to my mind concerning what the rapture will be like, and I will try to answer them.

Scriptural basis for the rapture:

The rapture of the church is described in some detail in I Thessalonians 4:16-17. First the Lord (Jesus) shall descend from heaven, then the dead in Christ shall rise, and finally we which are alive and remain shall be caught up in the air to be with Him. And in Matthew 24:40-41, Jesus describes it by saying that among any two people, one could be taken and the other left. In I Thessalonians 5:2, Paul describes it as coming like a thief in the night, and Jesus uses the same imagery in Matthew 24:43, urging us to watch for that day. It could be any day now. Are you ready? (See also Are You Going To Heaven?).

How will it happen?

As to when the rapture could occur, there are different views on that subject and you might want to check out the first book in the sidebar (The Rapture Question) if you're interested. But not much is said about how it will happen. In thinking about the rapture lately, it occurred to me that with all the believers from all over the world, the air will certainly be full of believers and it might be hard to avoid running into each other. It also occurred to me that we could be anywhere at the time it occurs. We may be outside, in which case, it would be no problem for us to be pulled upward to meet our Lord in the air. But what about if we are indoors, or in our car or in an airplane? In our present bodily state, we are not able to go through ceilings of any kind. I suppose that is why Paul added the last phrase of I Corinthians 15:52: "we shall all be changed." He goes on to say in the next verse that it will be "In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye." And in verse 53 he states that we must put on immortality. John further states in IJohn 3:2 that "when He shall appear, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is." After the resurrection, Jesus had a new body and thus he was able to go through walls (Luke 24:36 simply says he stood in their midst and the next verse says they thought he was spirit. Yet, in verse 39, He told them that a spirit doesn't have flesh and bones as He has. It''s a mystery, but we will have a glorified body like His. We will be changed first, which is why we will be able to go through ceilings or walls of any sort and be taken up from our homes, cars or wherever we are at the time as well as bumping into each other without any hurt. It will be a glorious time for the saved, but, If you're not saved, watch out-- there'll be mass collisions and a massive pile up on the highways.

An artist's conception of what the rapture of the church will be like

As believers driving cars are raptured, many crashes are likely to occur. As believing pilots are raptured in flight, plane crashes may happen. The world will be in turmoil.

@jolou: I believe it will happen in this lifetime, all the signs match up with what's been going on lately. I'm guessing that God is waiting on that big number (1/3 of the Earth's population) and after the last one gets saved and accepts Christ into their lives, then the true believers will be placed into the rapture. So I think we all should make sure our family and friends are saved, and if not, we need to guide them and warn them. Many blessings, and see you in the rapture friend!

@davenjilli lm: Me to, we must stay strong in faith and I've been getting a feeling that grows stronger every night that God may be trying to tell me about it. So make sure your family and friends are right with God! The world certainly looks like it's nearing the end, if you go back and look at all the signs that will have to happen before he can come back, about all of them have happened, or are happening and coming to a close. I'm guessing now, God is waiting on that one big number (1/3 of the earth's population) to become Christians, and when the last one accepts Christ, we will be placed into the rapture.

I found most of this lens to be completely absurd. I was raised Catholic, but this is one of those things that drove me away because it really misses the mark.

Anyone not believing this event wont happen has already sealed your doom. I am waiting for the rapture to happen. I think that thinking about it helps us not to concern ourselves with what goes on in the world too mcuh and it is a comfort to know that one day we will be raptured up to meet and be with the Lord forever.

While I do believe there will be a rapture, I have never worried overmuch about the how, when, where etc. I did, however, read the entire "Left Behind" series of books. I found the authors take of possible events enlightening and though provoking. I do see several other books listed here that I believe I would enjoy reading.

I just want to encourage you to keep writing about what you believe in - detractors or not. I think you provided a very thoughtful lens. I'm a Christian and I do believe in the rapture. There will always be scoffers.
