The 12 Chakras

Activating the 12 Chakra System

Most people are used to working with the 7 chakras, but in this time of increased spiritual growth and ascension, it is important to look towards working with the 12 chakras.

Chakra healing is now a widely known method of energy healing, and although most people are familiar with the 7 chakra system, there are in fact many chakras.

The 12 chakra system works with the 7 familiar ones - root (base), sacral, solar plexus, heart, throat, third eye (brow) and crown - as well as 5 additional chakras. These five additional chakras vary among teachers but include the transpersonal chakras - those of spirit.

This page looks at the earth star, navel, causal, soul star and stellar gateway chakras, but also includes references to other 12 chakra systems as well. Enjoy this introduction to the other chakras and learn about their importance, as well as how to balance and activate them.

Chakras are energy centres within the subtle body. In addition to our physical body we have an aura made up of layers, and the chakras are centres of spiritual consciousness within our energy bodies.

If you are not familiar with energy anatomy and the concept of chakras, I will be adding pages on understanding chakras and auras soon. In the meantime, a good resource to check out is this Introduction to the Chakras on the brilliant How to Raise your Vibration Blog.

The word chakra translates as "wheel" and these energy wheels spin when open and activated. They act as an exchange of energy, moving it about within your body and psyche. The ultimate aim of balancing all the chakras is for the ultimate spiritual energy known as kundalini to rise up through the body.

The 12 Chakras - What are they and why 12?

There are, as previously mentioned, many chakras. In the past, working with the seven main chakras has been sufficient. Balancing the lower chakras allowed kundalini to begin to rise up through them, moving through all of the chakras as they were balanced and activated, bringing the person greater spiritual insight.

During 2012, the Earth will be raising her vibration and causing a large energy shift into higher global consciousness. More and more people are experiencing increased spiritual awareness, and it is important to work towards activating other vital chakras in order to connect to both the Earth and the Source, or God.

That said, it is vital to have activated and healed your seven major chakras first. Only when these chakras have been worked on and kundalini energy has risen from root to crown can the additional chakras here be activated.

Opening the twelfth chakra, the stellar gateway, allows us direct access to Source, allowing Divine spiritual insight to enter us. This is filtered down by the soul star chakra, but can only be activated in conjunction with the earth star chakra, in order to ground and connect us to the Earth.

Each chakra deals with different emotions and issues that we need to release and let go of, in order to allow us to experience Oneness. Although referred to as the 12 chakra system, you can work with other chakras as well. For example, the feet chakras help to balance the root and earth star chakras.

Here are the 12 chakras that I work with in this system:

Useful Books on Chakra Healing

While there are, as yet, few books touching on the subject of 12 chakras, there are excellent resources on the 7 chakras and how to work with them for healing and balance. This is a key thing to do before moving onto the remaining 5 chakras within this system.

The best way to activate and heal your chakras is by healing and overcoming the issues that they represent. This can be aided by energy healing, crystals, meditation, mantras, yoga, exercises and affirmations, among other things.

Allowing the mind and body to become relaxed through meditation and other techniques allows you to connect with your inner core, and begin to process and understand any issues or patterns that need to be released.

Over the coming weeks I will be adding pages about each chakra along with meditations and healing techniques for all 12, along with information on the other chakras not mentioned here as well.

There are some wonderful meditations currently available to help you balance and activate your chakras. The one I have found to be most potent in terms of awakening the earth star, soul star and stellar gateway in particular is the 12 Chakras Meditation from Diana Cooper.

Information and Meditations on the 12 Chakras - by Diana Cooper

This is a wonderful and insightful recording that not only contains a meditation for activating the 12 chakras and 12 strands of DNA, but also provides background information on each chakra, some of the corresponding crystals for the new chakras, and how the chakras and DNA functioned in the time of Atlantis.

There is very little available on the 12 chakras at present. However, there are some excellent books on the seven major chakras, which is the essential starting place for chakra healing. These books contain excellent advice, meditations and exercises for balancing the seven chakras.

I've worked with someone who has worked with my chakras. It's interesting and I've learned a lot. I would like to know more.

NickOct on February 03, 2013:

I'm studying a healing technique known as Quantum Touch level II which uses the 12 Chakra model. I'm still a newbie at it though

NickOct on January 28, 2013:

I've been using the twelve chakra model for just over a year since doing a Quantum Touch Level II seminar. As I haven't done much work with chakras prior to that then I have found it difficult opening the chakras. The Heart chakra is one they use quite a bit as well as the other eleven.

meditationhowto1 on January 10, 2013:

Great to see a piece that has been expanded past the usual 7 chakras people discuss and on to the 12! Very nice!! :)

rootchakrahealing on December 24, 2012:

That's interesting, I've worked with 9 chakras most of my life but during my tai chi and qi gong practice I could always feel the gateway chakra you describe at this giant chalice where all of my energy radiates. I figured it was just my aura but now I'm going to consider it differently. I'm working on a website to pass some of my own teachings and healing techniques. I'm also a musician if you'd ever like to collaborate. I love that you talk about Atlantis, it makes me want to reread Plato's Timaeus!
