Working With The Spirits Of Trees

There are Spirits dwelling within and all around Nature....

There are Water Spirits, Rock Spirits, Tree Spirits, Plant Spirits, and so forth and so on. Each has its own deep wisdom and power. When we befriend these Nature Spirits, our own lives are made incredibly more richer by the contact.

Today, we are going to focus on working with The Spirits Of Trees.

Now if you love trees, this article will give you a means, a language if you will, for further communication with trees. And if you do not love trees (shock of shocks!), then it is my sincerest hope that this information will help to open up a new path to you.

Have you ever noticed that when you go into the forest or a peaceful park, how you feel relaxed, calm, refreshed and renewed? This is the gift of the Tree Spirits who are surrounding you; and they emanate vibrations of peace and serenity, sharing with us their highly evolved consciousness, out of love.

You can talk to trees and they can talk to you. You can also enlist their aid and their incredible strength - and most importantly, you can help them in return. Trees are, simply put, remarkable beings! They are ageless, patient, strong, serene, loving, giving, nurturing and kind. Your life can be renewed and rewarded by befriending the trees. And I will be teaching you how to commune with the trees in a language that they, and indeed all of Nature's Spirits, understand. Always remember that theirs in not a world of logic as we understand it, although they do possess intelligence and wisdom - it is different from, and in many ways, beyond our own. For theirs is a Way that reaches back to the beginning of time, before the Age of Dinosaurs... and is infinitely more ancient than any humans can know or understand.

So how are we to communicate with trees you might ask? Through LOVE (The Universal Language), with creativity, with passion, humor and playfulness - all the range of positive human emotion. Please bear in mind though, that when communing with Tree Spirits, one must not do so in a mechanical, hollow, unfeeling manner - for this will not work very well at all. One must sincerely put their heart and soul into the prayer for it to be truly heard - This is the language the trees understand.

Now to be totally frank with you, I believe that tree prayers are best done when they are spontaneous and from the Soul, so any ideas you read here are just that: ideas. Hopefully they will inspire you and get you started in developing your own joyful and powerful relationship with the Tree Beings.

Please Remember: Only ask the tree beings for that which is positive and for the good for all. Be ever mindful that what you do comes back to you in Mind, Body, and Spirit - which is what I think of as the "Rule Of Three". So never try to use their power for selfish or hateful ends as they will refuse you. Only use the power of the trees only to help and to heal.

Step 1: Learn To Appreciate Trees

The first step to establishing good communications with trees is to nourish a sincere love and respect for them. Visit nature often. A tranquil forest is the best, but unfortunately, this is not always possible. So in instances such as this, a local park or your back yard will suffice.

Be mindful of all that trees do for humanity and the world. They give oxygen, shade, prevent soil erosion, create homes for birds and other animals, create shelters for us, cool the air in the summer, create paper and other wood based materials and most importantly - provide a beauty that is one of the main features of this green and blue planet.

Walk amongst the trees often.... stand or sit in reverence and contemplation, with you back touching the base of the trees trunk, in contemplation of your favorite tree. Speak your gratitude to it... speak your love and respect out loud to the Tree Spirit.

Never, ever, destroy a tree or any part of it needlessly. That would be like asking a favor from a friend, only to turn around and physically harm them!

Step 2: Be A Tree Hugger!

This may sound a bit silly to some folks, but there's good reasons for hugging trees! Trees are unique beings, their roots reach deep into the Earth to draw upon its energy. Therefore, trees know of the Deep Mysteries of the Earth. But they also know the Mysteries and the powers of the Heavens - of Sun, Moon and star-lit sky, for their leaves reach ever upwards drawing upon the energy from above. It could be safely said that Tree Beings reach further in both directions than any other beings on Earth!

When you hug a tree with an open heart, you will become aware of the flow of energy between Heaven and Earth. That is the Energy of the Universe, coursing through the tree. As you feel this flow, you can better understand the power of the world and the forces of the Universe. Tree hugging will also helps to balance our own energy. For example, let's say that you are what some might call a "spacey" person, or that you "aren't very well grounded".... Well tree hugging can get you grounded and in touch with the firm and stabilizing energies of Mama Earth. On the other hand, if you are considered too mundane, too practical, and would like to be more intuitive, psychic, and free flowing - tree hugging can grant you celestial, spiritual energy.

Step 3: Opening Communications

Not only do we hug trees to balance ourselves, we do it to communicate with them. There is no rule that says while you are hugging a tree you can't be talking to it as well. Simply lean your cheek to the bark and whisper to the tree how you feel, or what you are thinking. I say "whisper" to the tree, because trees tend to communicate through whispering. This can best be heard through the whispering of a trees leaves. Talk to the tree like a dear and precious friend. Open your heart and listen to what the tree has to say to you... Now some folks say that they "hear" the voice of the tree speaking to them inside their minds. Others say that they hear them in their heart. Then there are those who can see with the inner eye what the trees are trying to convey to them. And then there are those who can not put into words how the exchange takes place.

Scroll to Continue

Just remember to be open to hearing the trees voice, however it should choose to speak to you. This may not be as easy as you might think at first. It could take a week or more - or even months before you can hear what they are saying, but don't give up! The trees want to communicate with us, and a faithful effort on the part of humans is usually rewarded.

Step 4: Sharing A Gift

It is very important that we humans don't just take from our tree friends. What kind of one-sided friendship would that be! So it is always proper to leave a gift for the trees that you develop relationships with. Be mindful that the tree you choose to work and commune with, is symbolic of all trees.

Traditionally, Native Americans gift trees with cornmeal, because cornmeal is sacred to them. You too may also decide to use cornmeal or another type of food or drink offering. You decide what is a relevant gift for you to leave for the tree. Some folks decide to leave money, by burying it at the base of the tree or by leaving coins on the earth around the base. Some sprinkle food around the tree or leave it in a little pile at the trunk's base. Some leave crystals or other semi-precious or precious stones. Then there are those who leave tie-on offerings of brightly colored ribbons or strips of cloth as offerings of friendship and thanks. I have also heard of people pouring a good drink of water at its roots during a dry season, or leaving manure around the tree base. Always be sure that the spirit of thanksgiving and love is in your heart as you leave your offering, whatever it may be. Just use your own intuition, imagination and good judgment to choose the appropriate gift for the Tree Spirits.

Step 5: Ask Your Question

After lovingly gifting the tree with your present, you may then ask the tree your question. I highly recommend keeping the question simple, to the point, and brief. Speak clearly, and honestly from your heart. Please do not get into the habit of asking for something each and every time you work with a Tree Spirit. Sometimes it is just good to be thankful, period.

Now once you have given your gift to the tree, take a moment to be still and listen what the tree has to say to you, and you might find that the tree has a gift to give you in return, even if you haven't asked for one.

In Conclusion

Well my friend, I hope this small blog has given those of you who already love and adore trees, the inspiration to get out there and start up a magickal working relationship with one; and for those of you who have honestly never considered trees in this manner, I hope that I have given you pause to stop and re-evaluate how you think and feel about Tree Beings/Spirits.

This is awesome. I had a relationship with a tree once... it was like a mentor. It was an 800 yr old tree, and I would go to it and sit with my back against it and relax, it would always just fill me with good energy and thoughts. If I was confused or upset or had a problem, I'd sit against my tree for a while and the answers would just come to me. This is such a true thing, everyone should try it. Great guide.

I have a back yard that is a forest because I didn't do as other do cutting down trees. I love them, as well I come to find out that my guarding angels loves trees and rock like I do. Due to ticks I don't go into the forest but every now and again I speak to them. They gotten so big in the last 20 years that they tower over my deck and provide shading. I love nature it is truly my only true friends.

Laura Brown from Barrie, Ontario, Canada on March 15, 2012:

Very lovely post. I'm going to see what else you have written. You put a lot of care into this post. I came just for the topic itself; I really like trees and rocks.

Parker on August 22, 2011:

I really like this hub. I'm really confused religion wise, but tgis helps me turn to something involving Earth and the delicate connection of spirits it holds. I am a nature lover and am excited to try this! Thank you for this hub!

Stephanie Garrett on August 20, 2011:

That is very interesting that I must do. I always wanted to believe in spirits ever since and I still do. Everywhere I go the spirits are following me not in the bad way but a good way.

Wendy Mason on June 15, 2011:

Thanks for this. I love trees too and honour them

Ever on March 16, 2011:

I'm an eclectic Pagan, which means that I take aspects from many religions that I like and mix them into a blend of my own religion, and I love working with Spirits. I believe that everything has a spirit/soul, including rivers, rocks, and trees.

A great Hub the world needs to get back to nature or else there will be range of social problems

Keep it up Raven

wildheart on October 04, 2010:

i love what you wrote raven and could totally relate to what you said about trees, as a young girl i spent many hours alone with my horse and a grove of willow trees, looking back i can now see how much comfort and joy and love i got from the trees, pure love. as an adult i love nothing more than to be in a forest somewhere with the trees, have had some incredible conversations with them and healings too, i just LOVE them so much,i too have kissed and hugged many trees, i wonder if other people sometimes pick up on a female or male energy about the tree, i have, but when i talk to other people about this they look at me as if im weird, i know im not, i have had a tree tell me that they were female or male

Beth on September 16, 2010:

Lucy, I think that both the wind and trees work together to speak. The human body has a voice box, but sound doesn't come from it without the wind from our lungs. If you think of the earth as a whole body, than it's kind of like the wind is the earth's lungs and the trees are it's voice box. Everything is connected and works together for a purpose. And yes, I think trees understand nonverbal communication from the heart as well :)

Charlotte on August 28, 2010:

I find that it's much easier for me to connect with trees/nature when I am barefoot. It's almost as if my shoes are a blindfold, and when I take them off I can really "see" the world around me.

Lucy on August 28, 2010:

Must we speak to trees verbally? A mute would speak from the heart, and the trees would still understand. And when the wind rustles through the leaves, do you think it is the wind or the trees speaking?

What a lovely hub! I have met many pagans who were drawn to trees as children without knowing why. I know that I always wanted to live in a tree house. My first clue that I was meant to be a Druid, I guess! And thanks for all the book recommendations. Some very good sources!

Lisa on June 26, 2010:

Awesome hub! I love trees, and have found that they actually do have a soul-- as do all living things. When I sincerely hug a tree, I feel a loving response in return, even though I don't expect it.

sunra on May 22, 2010:

May I put a drawing of souls in trees as that is what I have been doing the past 8 years of trees in SA. Even on paper it has an energy and speaks to one. Trees are there for the healing of us people, and where I live they are going down at a fast rate. There is much to learn from trees, they always answer your questions, not exactly what you always want to hear, but truthfully, they are always comforting. I have sat under them, a few in particular, (induna) trees, chief ones of the area, and they enfold you and comfort you like nothing else, one goes away enriched.

Paula, the universe always calls one to where you must be, to receive a message.

Waiting for the yes to post a treedrawing.

Paula D. Brown on May 03, 2010:

I took a walk in the Park one day and in my mind I was directed to go another direction. Then I arrived at the spot where there was a grove of trees and I said to the trees, "Hello my brothas and sistahs!" Suddenly a breeze came and the trees that I spoke to swayed simultaneously. I knew they said hello back to me. (smiling)

bobsmybaby on March 25, 2010:

Thank you so much for this information! I have a tree that i used to visit with my father as a child. I had no idea at the time why I loved the tree so much, but it was a huge part of my childhood memories. In recent years the area it is in became badly flooded and due to environmental and man made changes, I thought the tree was lost forever. The land has finally been drained and new walkways created, when I walked my dog down the path I could not believe my tree was not only still there, but had survived! I knew it instantly and must confess I cried when I saw it. Much hugging and muttering to it followed, but i noticed that kids had hammered hundreds of nails into its trunk and lower branches. I offered it some healing, not that I am trained in any way, just sent it my love really. I was surprised at the warmth i felt from that trunk. The next visit I took pliers and a hammer and started to remove the nails. Most are out, just a few high up left which my son is going to climb up and remove for me. But I need to offer a gift of healing.... now I have read this I am thinking a healing crystal of some kind... do you have any suggestions?

Thank you so much

I too am a tree lover and hugger and appreciate the energy they give me. Thank you for the great hub. I had never thought about the whispering aspect, I usually just talk to them through my mind.

Thanks again

Wow excellent hub! I had no idea that we could talk to the trees and ask for favors. I'm a practicing Wiccan and a Vegetarian and I try to embrace nature and respect all living things on earth. I'm definitely going to take your advise and stat practicing. Thanks for the hub!

salt from australia on November 21, 2009:

thankyou, how wonderful. We hug trees and I talk to them. The idea of giving them a lovely drink is a wonderful one especially in the current Australian climate.

Our eucalypt trees especially have a cooling effect on the earth in the on a summers evening which is valuable to us all. They also have an anticeptic quality that clears the air.

The earth is a magical planet!

This article touched me deeply on a spiritual level. I am 16, and I am pagan. I believe in Father sky, Mother Earth, The Moon & Sun, and all fellow brother and sister creatures. Thank you very much because now I wish to be more in touch with my tree brothers and sisters. I only hope now is that I get to be close with a tree and that we may commune through love and understanding :)And may I recommend moon gazing, and meditation under the moon, because it has helped me, along with conversing with trees :)

Wow, great Job you did on this hub. I sure hope you get a bunch of views for this because people often overlook the other life forms we share this planet with. Trees ROCK!

Brilliant Hub Raven! i enjoyed this teaching on trees, as a student of celtic and african spiritual path(i once studied to become a sangoma but chose not to finish) I can attest to the beauty and efficiency of communicating with trees, i found out when resting against them in my teens that they had lessons to share, and witness all the actions close to them in their psychic field, they impart the events and feelings of anything that happened there a veritable well of emotion..

Greetings monografiaac,

Sounds exactly like Pagan beliefs! We usually think of life as a great Web, in which all strands are interconnected. A great book to read about this belief is called "The Web Of Wyrd" by Brian Bates, (see the listing for it above), which gives an excellent description of it.

Thank you for the delightful comment and blessed be!

monografiaac from Brazil on April 24, 2008:

Really, connect with trees is just like connect with your deepest nature part. I'm spiritualist, and we believe that everything alive is connected and will evolve, always evolve, always pointing to perfection.

Dearest Kitchy Wytch,

Well you are most welcome!

And I couldn't agree with ya more; communicating with trees is indeed a very personal experience. And speaking of experiences... what a *lovely* experience you had! Thank you so much for sharing it with me!

{{{{Huge Hugs!}}}}

Excellent, you are an excellent teacher. I'm so glad you joined my "fan club." I will be back to read more hubs. Also, if you get a chance, please go by my site and check out my hub on water messages. You will be pleased to see that science is actually learning what you knew all along.

I talk to my trees (trees on our property), but I never thought to ask them for anything. Of course, they give me so much already.

Kitchy Wytch from Alabama on April 21, 2008:

I love this hub! I think communicating with trees is very different for each person - but so connected at the same time. I remember the first time I revisited a tree to talk and was greeted by "I remember your soul". What a feeling that was!

Thank you for a terrific hub, as always. :)
