Welcoming Religion and Spirituality to a New Pope
Pope Francis the New Pope Religion and Spirituality. This has been a year of religion and spirituality that will be marked in history. First Pope Benedict retires and then a new Pope is elected outside of Europe. It is not surprising that Pope Francis a cardinal from Latin American is elected. Latin American makes up 39% of all Catholics in the world. Argentina is rated 11 across the world Catholic religion and spirituality.
Pope Francis is 76 years old which is considered young in pope years. Jorge Mario Bergoglio is the first non-European pope during our lifetime. He is expected to give a fresh presence to the Catholic Church which has been in the middle of major controversies in the past few decades. Pope Francis is the first Jesuit (to take a vow of poverty) to be named pontiff in history.
All the world celebrates the much anticipated leadership he is expected to bring to the world and the church. Pope Francis is making his mark in history he is the first Pontiff to choose the name Francis.
Pope Francis Breaking with the Past
Pope Francis set a new precedent by breaking tradition with past practice. On his first Sunday appearance to over 150,000 by spontaneously addressing his audience rather than using a tradition prepared speech. Since he is very comfortable with the Italian Language it appears as if he will be speaking to his flock in only one language, unlike his predecessors.
His fresh style has already entertained crowds, with humor and personalized commentaries. Pope Francis has been however tweeting in several different language with his heartfelt comments. It seems that he will be speaking in Italian at least for now for most of his public appearances. His off the cuff remarks and comments to have intrigued many as he greeted passerby at a local parish church.
At Last A Pope for Women
Many anticipate that Pope Francis is now in a position to instigate change within the Catholic church. Society has change dramatically and women are looking to become more involved in the church. The time is right for Pope Francis to appoint women to positions in the Vatican in an effort to bring the practices of the church into the modern world. Many women look forward to these changes and anticipate that the Pope will surround himself with women consultants in effort to successfully bring about these changes
Some have suggested that this will take time. While the church has been out of sync with society it will take a Pope like Francis who is willing to break precedent to instigate more widespread roles within the church. Although women have had more opportunities in the Catholic church for education and meaningful work it has not kept pace with society.
There is also hope that other issues will be addressed. The issues of gay rights, divorce and contraception, which some women believe excludes them from the church. Although there is no guarentees Pope Francis appears to be open to change and a leader willing to listen to the issues needed to bring the church out of the past an into the future.
