Is Astral Projection Real Or Is It A Hoax?
Is astral projection real? This is the question I will attempt to answer in this article.
I have been asked numerous times this question, ever since my friends have heard about me learning astral projection to achieve an out of body experience.
Like many other rather esoteric subjects, astral projection is even till today cloaked in a haze of mysterious, unknowing and many people still think of it as something supernatural, paranormal.
Many people learn just now to open up to "other" things that are out of the realm of our 5 normal senses, and of course, with the nature of human beings, they are skeptical of what they hear or read about.
In fact, astral projection is very real. And contrary to popular belief, every single person on this earth had out of body experiences, except that most of us don't remember them because they usually happen when we are asleep during the night.
How to Have an Out-of-Body Experience - by William Buhlman
This is one of the best courses on out of body experiences that I came across while learning astral projection.
A set of 6 CDs by the master of astral projection William Buhlman, it teaches you everything you need to know to have a full blown (and conscious) astral projection from your home, day or night.
Unconscious Astral Projection
When we sleep at night, we usually dream. And we usually wander about outside of our bodies.
The problem is though that just like we don't remember our dreams in the morning (at least most people don't), we also don't remember our nocturnal travels.
For example my husband even today doesn't believe that he is dreaming during the night. It is simply because he never remembers his dreams. And yet, science has long determined and proved that dreams are real, they happen during our REM cycles. Not only that but we dream several times during every single night.
Unconscious astral projection happens during these dreams. We get out of our bodies, wander about, even learn from astral beings, but in the morning we usually don't remember anything.
How many times did you wake up either in the middle of the night or in the morning with the solution to an urgent (or serious) problem that was bugging you for days now? We usually say to this that the solution came to us during our dreams.
However this is not entirely true. Our dreams are only fragments of our imaginations with all sorts of weird things happening to us (flying on elephants, breathing underwater without equipment, living in a car in our bedroom, etc).
When we get useful information that will help us in our waking life, this information usually comes to us when we astral project. We are in the astral plane learning all sorts of things about the universe, about ourselves and our own problems.
One of the most fascinating encounters described about the astral world has been given by Robert Monroe in his set of 3 books starting with the book Journeys Out Of The body (I have all 3 books, which will remain forever in my personal collection).
And let me say that Robert Monroe is by no means a scammer or a crook. He is one of the most respected authorities on the subject of astral projection and OBE experiences.

Conscious Astral Projection
Conscious astral projection can be achieved in several ways and which you choose to go with will strongly depend on how much time you have on your hands, whether you can sit for a while uninterrupted at home, the type of personality you have, whether you recall easily your dreams, etc.
One of the easiest ways to achieve astral projection (one that I'm exploring right now as well) is through lucid dreaming. The main idea here is that while you are in the middle of a dream, you suddenly realize that you ARE dreaming, at which time you become "lucid".
Being lucid is just like being awake (in your mind) because you are conscious (even though you are in a dream).
Once you are lucid, then using some of the astral projection techniques you can propel yourself onto the astral plane or simply get out of your body in the real time.
Let me say that usually exiting through lucid dreaming is the easiest technique for most people. Exiting consciously, while we are in a state of being awake is much more difficult, because we first have to bring our body to fully relax, while when we already sleep and dream, our body is already in a state of sleep paralysis.
Another way of having a conscious astral projection is through meditation. By using some of the easy meditation exercises you can get your body to completely relax to a level that will basically bring about body paralysis. This is the step just before you can exit your body.
Many people are faithful to listening to binaural beats and getting into a very relaxed state that facilitates OBEs with ease. Personally I tend to get headaches when listening to binaural beats, so I usually don't use this method.
And then there is the method of simply trying to stay awake for as long as possible just before going to sleep, so that you get into what is called "body asleep, mind awake" state. Again, the body gets into the sleep paralysis state and the mind is still conscious, awake.
This is a bit harder to achieve because our bed is the place that our body knows that it is programmed to sleep in (especially in the night), so staying conscious might take a lot of effort.
OBE vs Astral Projection
Another question I've been asked a lot is whether there is a difference between OBE - out of body experiences and astral projection.
In general, there isn't. People use these terms interchangeably. However there is a difference that is related to the type of exit your body makes.
Let me explain.
There are two types of out of body experiences: In the real time zone (right next to your bed, where you can actually see your body and your immediate surroundings) and in the astral plane.
The astral plane is a different plane entirely, one that has nothing to do with our life here on Earth. When you are in the astral you won't see your body, or your room, or or you street at all. You will be in a "different dimension" so to speak.
Some people find this a bit difficult to swallow (especially people who can not imagine that there is something more out there, that there is life beyond our limited physical world), however let me tell you that once you've experienced this, your whole point of view will shift completely. While you now suspect, or hope, or imagine, then you will know.
And that makes all the difference.
Generally an astral projection is considered a type of OBE, although an OBE is not necessarily astral projection. This is because OBE includes lucid dreaming and NDE (near death experiences) as well.
The Astral Plane Is Better
Initially all I wanted was to have an out of body experience, to float outside of my body, and see myself lying on the bed (and maybe to travel over to my friend and spy on her and then next day to tell her what she was doing).
However over time I've realized that while this sounds exiting (in a mundane world), it would be so much more interesting to experience the astral plane.
Just imagine being out there and realizing that there is more to life than what we know. That there is life beyond death...imagine how much less we would all fear death throughout our lives.
We all live our lives in fear of death. It is a constant in our lives, for most of us. Wouldn't it be worth experiencing the astral world just so that we let go of this fear that we live every single day with? I think it would.
A Few Astral Projection Books I Have At Home
Authoritative Works On Astral Projection
Even if you don't believe in astral projection, you can try it from the comfort of your home. The truth is that learning astral projection is one of the cheapest hobbies and interests around. Seriously.
It is nothing like getting a Reiki attunement to become a master practitioner (which can cost a few thousand dollars) to channel energy. You don't have to go to any expensive courses and you don't have to be a guru, zen master or anything of that order to learn to have an out of body experience.
What you've got to lose? At most a few hours of practice, some time reading some truly interesting astral projection books and possibly getting a higher level of vibration (even if you never learn to AP), which is only a good thing.
For example I have a friend who tried to learn astral projection but she never could. I think she was not really so much into practicing it for real. Nevertheless, she got something very interesting out of all her practice. She suddenly started to see auras around her heard and that of people near her.
Not much, mind you, just a white murky band around the head, but that was enough of a proof that "there are more things to life than we can see, hear or smell), to truly get her to learn seeing auras for real. Now one of her side businesses is reading auras for customers. She is doing more for fun really, but she enjoys it immensely and she gets to help other people, which she now knows it's her calling in this life.
And all this because she raised her vibrations during her exercises in learning to astral project.
So give yourself the chance to experience, and start practicing, read the books below and then report back with your interesting results.

I can astral plane and I have been doing it for a long time. I find it to be quetionable in terms of being able to see things on this World. I am not certain that I float around viewing people on this planet. There is much to quetion in terms of where I go however. Most things seem dream like but once in a while something quetionable happens. I attempt to comunicate and only once did I get a strange answer. Who ever it was, was not human. Hearing bells when you cross over and going to different levels seems true. Perhaps its an interdimensional thing and we would only be ghost in some other world. Its an odd thing and very different from dreaming.

Those who have already experienced it, knows it is real. No more evidence needed. It won't be possible to prove it scientifically. So you have to try it and experience it.

I think it is real, I've always been interested in Astral Projection, Lucid Dreaming, etc. I've had a lucid dream (just once and it was very short) after a lot of practice. I didn't ever achieve astral projection though. Something I've always been interested in, especially in my younger days.

I did "astral projection" several times during my shamanic journeys and had out of the body experience in my dreams ( I became conscious I was dreaming and was out of my body - even experimented a little bit by going through the wall of my room with my astral body)

I might have done something like this when I was sleeping. Are there hoaxes out there? Sure there are and sometimes you just have to use your own judgment. But it's certainly possible.

Astral Projection and Dreams to me are both very powerful tools thank you for this insightful article
satto76 on February 18, 2012:
Yes, astral projection is very real. As it is subjective, it is difficult to prove. Why should one try to prove it anyway?
Maria-Zuzeena on October 30, 2011:
It is and for me it has been harder than every astral projector claims. Can't someone just come and pull me out of my body???
