Most of us know John 3:16 and Psalm 23 as some of the most quoted and read scriptures in the Bible. But here are a few passages that explain God in a little more detail that may not be mainstream knowledge. The following scriptures are taken from the NKJV. I will keep adding to this hub as time goes on and comments are welcomed.
God speaks to animals / A rainbow represents God's covenant with mankind
Genesis 9:8-12 – Then God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying, “And as for Me, behold, I establish My covenant with you and with your descendants after you, and with every living creature that is with you: the birds, the cattle, and every beast of the earth with you, of all that go out of the art, every beast of the earth. Thus I establish My covenant with you: Never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood; never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth. And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant which I make between Me and you, and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth.
God Can Turn Back Time
2 Kings 20:10-11 – And Hezekiah answered, “It is an easy thing for the shadow to go down ten degrees, but let the shadow go backward ten degrees. So Isaiah the prophet cried out to the Lord, and He brought the shadow ten degrees backward, by which it had gone down on the sundial of Ahaz.
When Jesus Wrote In The Sand, This Act Was Recorded In The Old Testament
Jeremiah 17:13 – O Lord, the hope of Israel, all who forsake You shall be ashamed. Those who depart from Me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the Lord, the fountain of living waters.
- Once I heard a preacher mention this scripture and then referred to Jesus writing in the earth during the accusations of the woman committing adultery. It struck me as awesome at the time and something to meditate on, so I decided to include it here.
Birds and Fish Dying
Hosea 4:1-3 – Hear the Word of the Lord, you children of Israel, for the Lord brings a charge against the inhabitants of the land: There is no truth or mercy or knowledge of God in the land. By swearing and lying, killing and stealing and committing adultery, they break all restraint, with bloodshed upon bloodshed. Therefore the land will mourn; and everyone who dwells there will waste away with the beasts of the field and the birds of the air; even the fish of the sea will be taken away.
- Is it possible God is judging the land for stealing, killing, lying, committing adultery? Does this go on in the United States? Is the mystery of the massive amounts of birds and fish dying off the judgment of the Almighty?
There Are Times When God’s Voice Is Not Quiet
Jeremiah 23:29 – Is not My word like a fire? Says the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?
Tornadoes / Hurricanes
Jeremiah 23:19-20 – Behold, a whirlwind of the Lord has gone forth in fury – a violent whirlwind! It will fall violently on the head of the wicked. The anger of the Lord will not turn back until He has executed and performed the thoughts of His heart. In the latter days you will understand perfectly.
- Completely read verses 23-29. God sent tornadoes because the “preachers” of the day were committing adultery, telling lies, and walking with evil doers. They spoke a vision of their own and did not consult with God. Their message to the people was you shall have peace and no evil will fall on you. If the preachers would have consulted with God for a message and turned from their wickedness, God would have heard them. Read it, it’s in there.
God Doesn’t Like Bratty Kids Either
2 Kings 2:23-24 – Then he went up from there to Bethel; and as he was going up the road, some youths came from the city and mocked him, and said to him, “Go up, you bald-head! Go up, you bald-head! So he turned around and looked at them, and pronounced a curse on them in the name of the Lord. And two female bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the youths.
God Does Not Want Anyone To Perish in Hell
2 Peter 3:9 – The Lord is not slack concerning His promise as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
- “Go to Hell” is a popular phase when a person is angry at another. I bet the devil loves when people say that to each other. We should not wish anyone to go to hell. God does not want anyone to go to hell, but to repent and turn to Him. We should not wish anyone to hell. Are you mad at someone? Jesus said pray for your enemies. Pray for them and trust in God. If God doesn’t want people to go to hell, we shouldn’t either. I know sometimes it’s hard but God will revenge against evil when He sees fit.
Jeremiah 50:38 – A drought is against her waters, and they will be dried up. For it is the land of carved images, and they are insane with their idols.
- Does America have idols? Is this country in a drought now?
Deut 11:13-17 – And it shall be that if you earnestly obey My commandments which I command you today, to love the Lord your God and serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul, then I will give you the rain for your land in its season, the early rain and the latter rain, that you may gather in your grain, your new wine, and your oil. And I will send grass in your fields for your livestock, that you may eat and be filled.
Take heed to yourselves, lest your heart be deceived, and you turn aside and serve other gods and worship them, lest the Lord’s anger be aroused against you, and He shut up the heavens so that there be no rain, and the land yield no produce, and you perish quickly from the good land which the Lord is giving you.
Haggai 1:3-11 – Then the Word of the Lord came by Haggai the prophet saying, Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, and this temple to lie in ruins? Now therefore, thus says the Lord of hosts: Consider your ways! You have sown much, and bring in little; you eat, but do not have enough; you drink, but you are not filled with drink; you clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; and he who earns wages, earns wages to put into a bag with holes. Thus says the Lord of hosts: Consider your ways!
“Go up to the mountains and bring wood and build the temple, that I may take pleasure in it and be glorified,” says the Lord. “You looked for much, but indeed it came to little; and when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why? Says the Lord of hosts. “Because of My House that is in ruins, while every one of you runs to his own house. Therefore the heavens above you withhold the dew, and the earth withholds its fruit. For I called a drought on the land and the mountains, on the grain and the new wine and the oil, on whatever the ground brings forth, on men and livestock, and on all the labor of your hands.
- So we can see in these few verses that worshipping idols and not worshipping God, and not honoring Him can bring some drought. Does this happen in America?
Isaiah 64:1-3 – Oh, that You would rend the heavens! That You would come down! That the mountains might shake at Your presence – as fire burns brushwood, as fire causes water to boil – to make Your name known to Your adversaries, that the nations may tremble at Your presence! When You did awesome things for which we did not look, You came down, the Mountains shook at Your presence.
God Sings Over You With Joy, and Rejoices in You
Zephaniah 3:17 – The Lord your God in your midst, the Mighty One will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.
We Can Be Faithful To God And Centered In His Will, And Still Be Attacked By The Enemy
2 Chronicles 32:1 – After these deeds of faithfulness, Sennacherib king of Assyria came and entered Judah; he encamped against the fortified cities, thinking to win them over to himself.
- King Sennacherib came to make war with King Hezekiah. Keep praying. Even if you don’t get an answer from God, keep praying.
Come Into Our Hearts Is Scriptural. So It’s Not Just A Southern Baptist Thing After All
Galatians 4:6 – And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, Abba, Father!
There Are No Other Gods Besides The Holy God
Deuteronomy 4:35 – To you it was shown, that you might know that the Lord Himself is God; there is none other besides Him.
Deuteronomy 4:39 – Therefore know this day, and consider it in your heart, that the Lord Himself is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other.
Isaiah 44:8 – do not fear, nor be afraid. Have I not told you from that time, and declared it, you are my witnesses. Is there a God besides Me? Indeed there is no other Rock; I know not one.
Isaiah 45:5-6 – I am the Lord, and there is no other; there is no god besides Me. I will gird you, though you have not known Me, that they may know from the rising of the sun to its setting that there is none besides Me. I am the Lord, and there is no other.
Acts 4:12 – Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.
God Knows When You Are Under Attack
Zechariah 2:8 – for thus says the Lord of hosts: He sent Me after glory, to the nations which plunder you; for he who touches you touches the apple of His eye.
- If I am the apple of God's eye, then I'm confident He is watching over me all the time.
How Does Jesus Relate To Non-Believers? He Doesn’t Look His Nose Down On Them
Mark 2:16-17 – And when the scribes and Pharisees saw Him eating with the tax collectors and sinners, they said to His disciples, “How is it that He eats and drinks with tax collectors and sinners?” When Jesus heard it, He said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”
John 4:7-10 - A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.” For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman? For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, Give Me a drink, you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”
Read the entire Chapter 4 of John.
John 8:10 -12 – When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, “Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.
Read the entire Chapter 8 of John.
The Word Of God Is Only Good If You Have Faith In It
Hebrews 4:2 –For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the Word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it.
- The Word of God must be combined with faith. To know God’s Word is one thing. But to live it, apply it, trust it, act on it, cling to it, that is another thing altogether.
Dwelling On God All The Time Keeps You In Peace
Isaiah 26:3 – You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.

David.M.M.-I too was really amazed at this passage when I learned of it. If God can turn back time then He can certainly speed it up too and we will be that much more closer to seeing Him. Thank you for reading. I am very glad you had your eyes opened on this verse. When our eyes are opened while reading the Word, it is an awesome thing indeed! God Bless You!

James - thank you. It reminds me that anger can be a bad thing when it turns into grudges. Thanks for reading and commenting.

Hi Mhatter99 - I don't know if I'm entertaining or not but I have gotten comments that the preacher I listen to is way too right wing conservative. Once a southern baptist preacher's wife got really ticked off with me when I pointed out that it's true witches visit the Christian church to cause division among the brethern. Boy was she mad at me.
I usually don't get laughter when discussing the scriptures. However the one time I did get some real laughter is when I tried to explain to an Engineer that Bigfoots talk to each other by knocking on the trees. If you research Bigfoot you will see this over and over. Well he laughed so hard I really felt stupid, so I stopped talking. I am sitting here chuckling as I type this because the situation is funny now in hindsight.

Hello Logos831 - thanks for your comment. I heard a preacher once point out the passage in Jeremiah 17 about writing in the earth, and he also mentioned Jesus writing in the sand and I thought it was awesome, so I decided to include it here.
The verse in Zechariah does not encourage revenge - at least I don't see that but the bulleted section is my opinion on it. On second thought I don't want to harbor anger towards anyone, not even enemies so I think I will make a revision to my bullet.
Thanks for your comment and for stopping by.

Well, this was a take I haven't seen. I bet you are very entertaining when discussing with "witnesses". thanks

Interesting hub. Love that first one. I always think about that when I see a rainbow. I think the Jeremiah 17 one is a stretchhhhhhhhh though! And I don't see how that Zechariah verse promotes praying for revenge, but maybe I misunderstood you?
