The Element of Fire

Fire is a powerful element. Prometheus went against the gods to steal it for all of humanity and for this he was punished. The Greek philosopher Heraclitus thought that our souls consist of both water and fire, but fire reflected the ultimate in us. According to him, our aim is to have our souls become pure fire. This could be analogous to the quest for enlightenment.

The elements are an important part of witchcraft. They are symbolic of the composition of our reality, reflecting parts of ourselves and the world around us. Fire is the part of us that consumes and is driven. It is our passion and the energy we put into our day-to-day life. It reflects our creativity. The spark of life itself is a manifestation of the element of fire.

It is a masculine or active element that is ever-changing and constantly moving. We use fire to cook food and heat our homes. It illuminates the darkness and provides us with light. You may wish to connect to the element of fire if you find you are deficient in this element. Perhaps you lack passion or you are having issues motivating yourself to get things done. Fire is always a big part of who we are. You don't need to be an Aries, Leo, or Sagittarius to tap into these qualities.

Fire is our inner light. The divine fire that lights up our souls. It guides us towards our dreams by lighting the way.

Are You Ready to Play With Fire?

Some say when we play with fire we are bound to get burnt. Fire definitely should be treated with respect. It is combustible and can be explosive. I recommend that you have stabilizing influences handy to deal with whatever comes up in your work. A grounding or earthing meditation can be of great use.

If we don't apply the balance to our fiery energies we can suffer burnout. This is why we need to set limits. Fire requires boundaries. If we are feeding it, it must be tended to.

Fire possesses a sense of danger. We are captivated by its beauty, but nobody wants to get burnt. If you are grappling with fear or repression the fiery element can help unfreeze some of your feelings. Getting comfortable with danger may be the cathartic thing you need to spring into action and get comfortable with change.

Gaze Into a Fire

You can do this by lighting up a bonfire or using a candle flame. Practice a little pyromancy, This is a form of fortune-telling where you peer into the flames and discern meaning. The human mind is skilled at forming pictures out of undefined shapes. This was one of the first forms of prognostication and it can be a lot of fun.

Pyromancy was developed back in the times when burnt offerings were made to the gods. A seer would interpret the flames searching for signs as the offering was made. A silent fire with no smoke was considered fortuitous. How the smoke rose, the sounds, the color, and its scent were all considered ways the gods could communicate.

Watch the flames. Observe the shapes and patterns. Allow your mind to free associate. What images enter your mind? What thoughts are coming? Listen to the sounds the fire makes. Feel the warmth it creates. What does your intuition read of the flames?

Don't worry if you aren't confident about your intuition just yet. A dream analysis book is another way of interpreting what you see or hear.

Enjoy the Heat of the Sun

Basking in sunlight is one of the easiest ways to connect with fire. Get outside and feel the Sun's heat. Meditate while taking in its light rays and energy. When the weather is cold find a patch of sunlight indoors. Crystals like Carnelian or Citrine make terrific meditational aids.

The Sun imbues us with confidence. If we require bravery we could use this symbolism. It is highly visible and lights up the world around us. When sitting in its light reflect on its qualities. Do a solar invocation by thinking about that which you wish to embrace. You can add elements of movement to meditation or ritual by doing Sun Salutations yoga poses.

What qualities does the Sun have that you want to bring out in yourself? Do you want to be a warm person? Do you wish to bring clarity to a situation or bring light to an issue in the world? The Sun is revealing. If you are involved in activism the Sun can definitely help you in your magick.

Initiating Change

Fire has a destructive element. It can be cleansing or banishing force. When we light a candle we are using this destructive energy in a controlled or limited way. If you are looking to make a significant change in your life working with the element of fire can be a good choice. Fire is often used to clear away brush in order to make room for new growth. Let it clear away the rubbish that is getting in the way of your dreams. Let it limit you to only what you wish to acquire. Work with the element of fire when you have bridges to burn.

If you are in a job that doesn't provide you with what you need or you have toxic relationships embrace the destructive element of fire. This can help you feel strong enough to destroy the negative things you grew too comfortable with.

Creating a Ritual Fire

A bonfire is contained within a sacred circle all its own. Fire requires boundaries. Instead of keeping harmful elements out of the circle, it is harnessing the power of the element within the circle. It is the witchiest of all elements. Fire must be tended to with care and fed if it should start to dim. Fire consumes, but it always gives back. It gives back warmth, energy, light, and cooks our food.

There are numerous fire rituals that can be done. Purification rituals where you burn items emblematic of that which you wish to cleanse from your spirit or life. Initiation rituals to mark a new path. To begin a new life the old one must die. The destructive capacity of fire helps clear the way for this new path. You may want to use fire rituals if you are looking to rebuild your life and wish to experience ego death. After all, it is the phoenix that rises from the ashes.

There are needfire spells where you can petition the gods with written requests. It is thought that requests are carried to the heavens on smoke. It is also customary to burn sacred herbs on the sacred bonfires of the Sabbats or Solar festivals.

Fires are celebratory and fun. I hope I have given you a few good ideas to incorporate into your magick practice. Remember to always be fire safe. Keep a bucket of water handy and make sure there is no fire ban in your area. Also, be conscientious of any neighbors living nearby who may be concerned about stray sparks.
