I Killed a Wolf! How would you interpret this Dream?

I had this dream over 10 years ago, but it is still very vivid to me.

Chasing the Wolf

In the dream I was among a group of people, we were running along a road chasing a wolf! The wolf was very ferocious and dangerous, and we were trying to capture him by 'herding' him towards a cage at the end of the narrow road.

After a tiring chase we at last managed to get him into the cage and everyone began to cheer, they were so relieved that we had caught the wolf.

Fighting for my Life

However, they had not realised that the cage door had not been closed securely and just as I yelled out "Quick! Someone lock the cage!" the wolf burst through the door and jumped straight at me!!

He was huge, and looked rabid, and he went straight for my throat!

Somehow I managed to put my hands up in time to grab him around his neck and shoulders, and was able to hold him at arms length.

The wolf was snarling viciously, saliva dripping from his fangs as we struggled.

No one tried to help me, they just stood around with their mouths open, gawping, while I was fighting for my life!

Killing the Wolf

With super-human strength I was able to hold the wolf away from my throat and I gradually moved my hands up around his muzzle, holding his jaws closed and then, as he struggled again, trying to shake his head free... I squeezed... tighter and tighter... and crushed his skull. I had killed him...

Immediately I felt terrible. I had killed a wolf. I love wolves, I think they are beautiful, fascinating creatures... besides which, I could never kill an animal. I began to cry, in fact I was sobbing so hard that I woke myself up!

I lay there in bed crying for a quite a long while, I was so upset to have killed the wolf in my dream... I was panting too - exhausted from the struggle.

The dream had been so very vivid. I can even now, years later, still feel his warm, soft fur and hear his blood-curdling snarls. I can feel and hear the bones cracking and splintering as I crushed his skull with my bare hands...

Many of the people who have heard about this dream came up with the explanation that, in taking the life of the wolf, I also I took on the power of the wolf, the wolf sacrificed itself for me.

To me, the wolf, as an animal totem, has always stood for 'teacher' he passes his knowledge on to his family... if this is the case, then I am very grateful to have had this dream experience.

What do you think? How would you interpret this dream?

I hope you have enjoyed reading about my dream and found it both interesting and entertaining? You are welcome to leave a comment and share your thoughts and please feel free to rate this story (preferably 'up')... Thanks!

I had a similar dream as well. I was in an older house, apparently one i lived in, and my dad was in his room in his closet n so i went to go talk to him when all of a sudden i saw a wolf jump out of no where n chased me out to the living room. I fell on the couch and the wolf leaped onto me and went straight for my throat, but i grabed its neck with my hands and tried to choke it as hard as i could and we wrestled to the ground where i ended up on top of the wolf pinning it down. I grabbed a knife and went to stab it in the eye but when i did i couldnt quite pudh it threw. Like it was my body resisting but i knew if i let the wolf get away it could attack my Dad so i finally was able to to push the knife from its eye to the back of its skull which was all pretty graphic in my dream, i could here its skull crack from jamming it in and everything. However i felt a mixture of feelings after. I was happy that it was over and the wolf was dead because that ment i was out of danger n my dad was out of danger....but at the same time, i had a disapointed/kinda depressed feeling because i had ended the wolfs life. I love wolves after all. Theyre my favorite animal. I often refer myself as a lone wolf because most of my life ive felt like its just been me surviving in this world, only reseving help here n there from people, idk its just ive never had a dream like that befor, it didnt feel normal.

I too have had a dream very similar to yours. I was walking with a group of people and there was a pack of wolves, five of them. We were walking through a narrow bridge and at the end of the bridge we spotted the pack of wolves. After that the alpha wolf attacked me and bit my leg. At that moment I grabbed a knife that I had in my pocket, and stabbed him in his left eye. I felt and heard the crunch as the knife penetrated the inside of his skull. After that he was struggling and still was latched onto my leg, I then forcefully shove the knife across the top of his skull to the back of his spine and sever his spinal cord feeling and hearing every second of the blade cutting. Finally he let go of my leg and I watched as he died in front of my eyes howling with a very sad howl. I woke up feeling sad that I killed an animal that I like.

These dreams feel so real and can be very upsetting Cynthia. They are not easy to interpret either - because we each have different views on the symbology. That's why they say that only each of us, ourselves, can really interpret our own dreams...

cynthia on May 28, 2014:

So weird I had almost the same dream I just woke up crying from it.

I didn't actually kill the wolf, it was a group of boys (about 4-5) that i knew in my dream but i forget who they are now. They had the wolf in a neckhold using one of those snares commonly used by animal control for aggressive the end of my dream i was crying because We did not have the proper tools to swiftly kill the wolf (in my dream i mentioned with deep regret that an axe could have been used to quickly kill him)and that he had to suffer such agonizing pain to be killed.

My mom and her new husband (who i do not like or relate to very well in my waking life) were sitting at a table in the mall and i went to go seek comfort but they basically ignored me and so i went off to cry alone. (In my waking life my mom and i live in different states and we hardly keep in touch anymore)

The actual killing of the wolf was graphic to me. Many stabs were made all around his body and he finally died when i witnessed his throat being slit from a distance. There was blood stained all around the mall floor and it was a huge battle to try and kill him until his ultimate death. I woke up crying and feeling so sorry for the poor wolf, even though in the beginning of the dream i thought it was dangerous and needed to be killed

just woke up from my dream of me being attacked by a black werewolf jumping from a forest hill and some how i had most of my arm in through his mouth and i was beating him against the concrete floor and the corners of some stairs and then all of a sudden i realized that i only had his head left on my arm and i went towards a light where some people were and i some how managed to take the head off with a surprise that i didn't have a single scratch on my arm or anywhere on my body and i walked away but for only i had taken a few steps when this guy came towards me with a face of admiration i looked at him straight in the eyes and walked away to only wake up from the dream

I'm so sorry, my life has been pretty hectic these past few months, a bit of a rollercoaster ride, and I haven't logged in here for quite a while. Just popping in to say "Thank you so much for your comments!" and for sharing your thoughts, ideas and experiences. Sue B - I think your interpretation seems to fit in most with what was going on in my life at that time... Thank you :)

Tom on August 12, 2011:

Of course, in any dream interpretation, the most important aspect is how you feel about what happened. This is the key to the message received. I had a dream about killing a large, black, ferocious wolf and what it meant was an aspect of my ego which was ferociously bothering me, was killed off finally after years of struggle. I defeated betrayal, (as is commonly believed in dream interpretation) but it was a betrayal of myself!

Sue B. on June 06, 2011:

Reading this dream and all of the interpretations you received was interesting.

Since my initial opinion of your dream was not shared yet, I will share it now.

My first thoughts were that the wolf was representing something within yourself you were attempting to suppress. From the details of this dream, it sounds like this was something that could not be quieted within you and it rebelled. I would assume the wold would represent your animalistic nature, your instincts, aggression, something that operates unconsciously for you. Since you were attempting to suppress it, I would say you were viewing this aspect of yourself as undesireable and were attempting to rid yourself of it.

You kill this wolf and weep about it when you wake. I think this sounds like at the time of this dream, you were not honoring an important part of yourself. I do not think you were ridding yourself of something bad, I think you were attempting to rid yourself of a part of you you were viewing as bad but was not. The dream left you with a horrible feeling and sadness because you were not living in harmony with all aspects of who you are and you needed to find balance. There can be an outcome where the wolf and the person both live and are free.

I also had almost same dream yesterday night.. I googled fr d interpretation and its bizzzare dat every site has different interpretations. some say 'To dream that you kill a wolf, indicates betrayal. Certain secrets will be revealed to you.' bt I think d difference in mine n ur dream is dat I ws being threatened by d wolf n ws trying to protect myself n others(may b 2-3 people) by closing ourselves inside our house's gate bt my gate gt opend by mistake and wolf entered my house n hide in some place to attack afterwards. bt I gaind strength threw away my fear n intensionally closed d door to trap him inside my house only and fight wid him den n der only. I found him, as he ws trying to move away surprisingly now he was protecting himself n he came out of his hiding place n I catch holded his mouth tightly before he attacks me n turned around his neck several tyms n broke his neck and killed him. bt I think he was filled wid some powers and I ws afraid dat he may again get bak to life so I teard him apart in two and again ws afraid dat his each part may grow in a new wolf so I started bt those parts melted n flew wid water.. I also saw a hyena roaming in front of my door n I gt more frightened bt he didn't harmed me..I cald my parents n they insisted me to stay inside d house bt as I ws gng to close d door, the wolf with whom I ws already afraid came wid silent steps n enterd my place.. rest what happened I told.. I interpret it as fighting and killing my fears and problems I was facing.. as earlier I ws afraid of it bt later I gaind strength and fought wid it and killed him.. plz tell wat u interpret it as.. if m wrong plz tell..

i feel since no one helped you that it was something you had to do. maybe something was going on in your life and maybe the death of the wolf meant something like the loss of a friend or something

Linda on November 15, 2010:

I would interpret it as 'killing' your wild side.

any more dreams u have

CrystalStarWoman (author) from Pevensey Bay, East Sussex, England on January 23, 2010:

Thank you Ramtulip. Interesting thoughts... However, it does not 'feel' quite right to me, in relation to what was happening in my life at that time.

It is fascinating how the symbology and the interpretation of archetypes differs from person to person!

ramtulip from india on January 23, 2010:

the wolf is one which sniffs with those whom u are associated with from waking life.its like a policeman and watches over you and see's whether u are entering dream world with clean mind.after following certains divine laws and then suddenly if u shift your mind in wrong direction then wolf is the first one to get hold of it.

trying to cage the wolf says that you dont wanted to be reminded whatever you do in waking killing wolf with your own hands says that u have break yourself free and whatever wrong acts u commit in waking life, that too after reaching certain spiritual levels, there will be no one to checkmate it in dream world.a wolf is a guardian and he smells if there is anything wrong associated with your soul.

it reminds u that there is no way you can cheat by pretending that you are following certain divine laws and in between commiting small errors.

now,u will never know what type of negative vibration you are going to encouter in dream world.

Thank you for your thoughts and interesting interpretation of this dream - you've given me lots to think about.

Over the years I have had lots of vivid dreams that have had quite an impact, ones that have stood out for me as being a bit different from 'the norm'. I wrote down most of them and will publish some of them on my Hub pages, as it will be fascinating to read other peoples' ideas and interpretations of them.

Sanctus Vesania on October 25, 2009:

The very first thing that stands out in this dream is how the wolf was described as 'ferocious, dangerous, and even rabid'. The next thing that stands out is when you wrote "To me, the wolf, as an animal totem, has always stood for 'teacher'..."

It's hard to say what the dream meant as you had it ten years ago. The fact that you can still remember it, tells me that it still has an impact on you.

I suspect that the wolf, if symbolic for a teacher was a teacher of bad things; the fact that the wolf came after you appears symbolic of someone in your life having come after you with deceptive teachings. The fact that your friends didn't help you destroy the wolf, indicates that it was not their battle to fight.

The fact that you started crying about slaying the wolf indicates to me that you may not have been willing to fully give up on these teachings.

That's the interpretation I get.
