Why Are Christians Happier & Healthier, Better Spouses, Better Neighbors & Better Citizens, Who Live Longer Lives?

James A. Watkins is an entrepreneur, musician, and a writer with four non-fiction books and hundreds of magazine articles read by millions.

The Christian Faith is Transforming

Christians are systematically silenced in our colleges. Ask yourself, what would happen if other groups, such as Marxists, feminists, or racial grievance mongers, were not allowed to share their views on campus.

Christians rightly believe that Christ can and will improve the lives of individuals and our society in general. And yet their message is the only one denounced as delusional, ignorant, and dangerous in our public universities, most of which they built.

Separating Christians by calling them and their message 'religious' and therefore forbidden is a devilish trick that has been quite successful. No one is more religious than a devout leftist. The fact is that the Christians are the only one of these proselytizing groups that possess proof their program works!

Christians ARE less violent, less likely to commit crimes, have more stable marriages and families, and produce better future citizens. They are happier, healthier, live longer, and are far more generous with their time and money to the needy.

The Christian faith has made the world a far better place, having invented charity, hospitals, nursing homes, hospices, schools, colleges, social work, orphanages, and the abolition of slavery, et al.

The ideology of the Left, which is allowed to shout its ideas from college rooftops, has brought nothing to humankind except immeasurable suffering, misery, cruelty, torture, and death.

Christians are Happier and Healthier

The more often you attend church, the happier you are! According to the General Social Survey, those who attend church more than once a week are far more likely to say they are "Very Happy." People who never step foot in a church are the least likely to declare themselves “Very Happy,” less than half the percentage of regular churchgoers who do.

Americans who rarely miss church, exhibit better mental, emotional, and physical health. They live longer, too.

Christians have more stable marriages and fewer disabilities in their old age. They feel better about themselves, are less likely to be depressed or suffer from anxiety, and less likely to use drugs and alcohol. Their children have better outcomes, as well.

Renowned psychiatrist Harold G. Koenig, M.D., professor at Duke University, is one of many who have conducted extensive research into this phenomenon. He finds that the more devout a Christian is, the better off they are psychologically. Those who are serious about their faith are better able to cope with stress, are more resilient, and experience less mental illness. They are more satisfied with their lives than other folks, experience greater well-being, and a higher sense of optimism and hope.

Dr. Koenig also finds that serious Christians have more and more robust social relationships. They are more likely to provide support to others in every way.

Christians Live Longer

The Harvard School of Public Health studied suicide in America and found that people who go to church every week are five times less likely to commit suicide.

The New York Times published a study that concluded regular churchgoers are 1/3 less likely to die from any cause than those of the same age who never darken a church door, especially from cardiovascular disease or cancer. The report declares, "We have serious research that indicates regular church attendance can add as much as seven years to longevity for white Americans and 14 years for African-Americans."

A new study shows that Christians are far less likely to die from what has become known as "deaths of despair," meaning suicide or death from drug and alcohol abuse, whether an overdose or the long term effects. Harvard’s T. H. Chan School of Public Health found that regular church attendance was associated with a 33% lower hazard among men and a remarkable 68% lower danger of death from despair among women.

The more often you go to church, the healthier you tend to be. Study after study shows that those who actively go to church generally do live longer and happier lives.

Christian Teenagers are Happier and Healthier

Much academic research shows that the children of married parents who are committed Christians do better in life than other children.

Teenagers who have been raised in the church are happier and live far more productive lives. The National Study of Youth and Religion, published by the Oxford University Press, shows that the more devoted to Christ teenagers are, the less likely they will smoke, drink, or use drugs. They are less likely to view pornography, skip school, cheat on tests, get suspended from school, or receive poor grades. They are unlikely to exhibit a hot temper, rebel against parents, lie to their parents, feel alone, misunderstood, guilty, or depressed, and fornicate.

The more serious they are about their faith, the more likely young people believe they are loved, trust that their lives have meaning, plan for the future, are satisfied with the way they look, and get along well with siblings.

Youth who report going to church regularly also report better relationships with adults, particularly closer relationships with their parents. They are more likely to say their parents care for them, understand them, and pay attention to them. They are more likely to have compassion for poor people and the homeless, to respect the elderly, and to volunteer for charities.

Fifteen years ago, Christian Smith and Melanie Lundquist Denton published a gold-standard study of "the religious and spiritual lives of American teenagers." They measured teens on their level of devotion to Christianity and how they were doing on 99 different measures of physical, emotional, educational, and relational health. The more religiously devoted teenagers came out better in all 99 categories. Every. Single. One.

Conservative Christian Women are the Happiest Women in the World

The New York Times published a study of married couples that stunningly showed the happiest wives in America by far are those in politically conservative, Christian marriages. The survey conducted by the University of Virginia, Brigham Young University, and Georgetown University, revealed that “wives who hold conservative gender values and attend religious services regularly with their husbands are 33% more likely to have high-quality marriages.”

Many studies have found that married people who are members of a church are far less likely to commit adultery or get divorced.

Other research shows that traditional couples that agree on the traditional roles of complementary sexes, male and female, reported the highest quality relationships. The results are consistent across the Western Hemisphere, Europe, and Australia. Religious norms and the reinforcement of religious communities are generally offered as possible reasons for this correlation. The happiest women are housewives, not working women.

Christian Men are Better Husbands

Men who attend weekly worship services are only half as likely to commit violence against their wife or girlfriend. No matter how the data is analyzed, regular attendance at church "has a strong and statistically significant inverse association with the incidence of domestic abuse" of any kind, according to Marripedia. And religiously active conservative Protestant men are the least likely of all men to engage in domestic violence.

As reported in the New American, "Put simply, there is no link between traditionalism and domestic violence, as feminism has charged. It is liberal men — feminist-oriented men — who are most likely to abuse women."

Feminists describe domestic violence as "wife-beating," which obscures reality. The fact is that married women are far less likely to be abused by men than single, divorced, or cohabitating women. So it ought to be called “non-wife beating.” Contrary to feminist doctrine, getting married dramatically reduces the likelihood that a woman will be the victim of any type of crime.

Christians are Better Neighbors and Better Citizens

According to scientific research, Christians are more helpful people, more generous neighbors, and more conscientious citizens than Unbelievers. Christians not only volunteer twice as often for charity work, but they are also even twice as likely to volunteer for non-Christian charities than do Unbelievers, especially in service to the poor, elderly, and young.

And there is a remarkable difference in giving money to the needy as well. An Unbeliever is five times more likely to have given nothing to the needy last year as a Christian. Moreover, the amounts given are three times larger by Christians. They give four times a more significant percentage of their income to the needy. Christians are significantly more likely to give money to strangers and far more likely to provide financial aid to family and friends.

In a survey of fifteen possible good deeds, e.g., helping someone find a job, donating blood, letting a stranger cut in line, spending time with a depressed friend, or looking after a neighbor's house, Christians are far more likely to help others.

In fact, in every category, Secular people prove to be more selfish, self-centered, stingy, and narcissistic. Christians are also twice as active civically as Secular Americans, belonging to far more community organizations.

Unbelievers trust deeply religious people more than they do other Unbelievers! Christians are more trusting of all other people than Secularists are. Christians express more trust in shopkeepers, neighbors, co-workers, people of different races and ethnicities, and in total strangers than Secular individuals do.

Practicing Christians are more than twice as likely to adopt a child than the general population. While Christians have built a reputation for many of the things they are against, adoption and foster care are emerging as a cause they are for. While only 2% of all Americans have adopted, this rises to 5% among practicing Christians.

Contrary to widely-held assumptions, Pew Research shows the church doesn't have a "moralistic busybody” reputation among Americans. Fifty-four percent of religiously unaffiliated Americans believe the church plays a vital role in preserving moral standards in their community. Agnostics and atheists? Fifty-two percent of agnostics and 31 percent of atheists believe churches' moral influence is essential to their communities. Only 7 percent of American adults express mostly negative views of the Church.

Every one of the top ten countries on the Human Development Index has centuries of Christian heritage.

A clear majority of all the Nobel Prize Winners in Science are Christians.

Christians are More Tolerant too

Christians are more tolerant of different viewpoints than Atheists, according to researchers in Europe. A new study concludes that atheists and agnostics think of themselves as more open-minded than those with faith but are less tolerant of differing opinions and ideas. This proves that the dominant view taught to Americans through our schools, colleges, and media - that secular people are more tolerant and open-minded - is a carefully crafted lie: a deception. Who is the father of lies?

Christians' Enormous Contributions to Education and Medical Care

As Catholic News reports, "No single group in human history has contributed more to education than Christians. No group in human history has contributed more to healthcare than Christians. Christians, more than anyone else, have contributed to the welfare and protection of children." No other group in human history fought the slave trade more than Christians. No other single group in human history contributed more to the cause of charity than Christians.

"The Church is the largest single provider of healthcare and education in the world, working primarily in some of the poorest countries where there is no other care or teaching available," asserts Catholic News.

Consider how many hospitals have the words “Baptist,” “Presbyterian,” or “Adventist” in their names. Others bear the names of Christian Saints. Are there any hospitals named after Charles Darwin, Karl Marx, Friedrich Nietzsche, or Sigmund Freud?

Christian Charity

According to the Colson Center: "The average North American congregation provides its community with about $184,000 worth of social services every year. And churches sponsor more than 1.6 million social service programs in America annually, with 7.6 million volunteers. You’ll never hear such facts in the mainstream press," which leads to inaccurate and unfair perceptions of Christians.

Half of all volunteering in America occurs with Christian Faith activities. Half of all charitable giving is to Faith-Based Charities. Half of all associational memberships are church-related.

As Robert Putnam writes in Bowling Alone: “Religious worshippers and people who say religion is very important to them are much more likely than other persons to visit friends, to entertain at home, to attend club meetings, and to belong to all sorts of clubs, groups, associations, and organizations.”

God's Moral Law is Good for You

Christianity played a decisive role in American history. Its ideas of the sacred spread all across the traditions and ceremonies of life. Christian Civilization ingeniously endowed our institutions with religious authority without demanding faithful obedience from all Americans. Love your neighbor applies no matter what his beliefs are and does not command conformity from him. Christians are obligated to tell others about Jesus but never to force others to follow Him. We do not demand our critics be silenced. We declare our faith without threatening violence to those who scoff.

God revealed Divine Law to Man. No government should contradict God's Law—only protect it. The divine pattern of law for human happiness includes reverence toward God and acknowledgment of His supremacy over all things. Marriage is sacred; adultery bad; human life sacred; lies wrong; stealing a sin.

Do not covet; work for what you want; no murder allowed; be honest in your dealings; support law and order; keep the peace; honor and obey your parents; respect the elderly; cherish women.

Men must protect, feed, clothe, and shelter their women and children. Help the helpless—the disabled person, the injured, the sick, the widow, the orphan. Do not participate in vice or promote it. Be morally upright, not filthy, nasty, and evil. Support personal and public standards of decency. Not for God's sake. For the sake of yourself, your children and grandchildren, your neighbors and community, your country, and world.

True Believers are the Happiest of All

The happiest of all Americans are what are sneeringly called "Fundamentalists."

According to Social Science, eleven percent of Americans are ‘True Believers.’ They go to church regularly, and their faith is fundamental to their identity and daily life.

The True Believers firmly believe that Objective Truth exists; Sin is real and awful; God's Moral Law defines Good and Evil; the Bible is the True Word of God; telling others about Jesus and His program for Salvation is needful; God created everything that is, including men and women as they are - not 'descended' from lower life forms; all sex outside Holy Matrimony is wrong; abortion is murder; there is a Hell; all persons will face Judgment Day; Christianity is the only True Religion, and Jesus is the only way to Heaven.

This 11%, these True Believers, are the happiest of all people in the world. Isn’t that awesome.

Hi, A great article- I believe if you give your heart to God--you are truly a happy spirit. I talk to him so many times a day to thank him for all he has done for me in my life.

I don't mean my life has not seen pain--very much so--but my Lord was with me through it all.

I was raised in a Baptist Church, but also went with my grandparents to their Church of God Church.

I pray for America and it people to find peace on our earth each day. Stay safe.

Until Later,

Bobbi Purvis

At no time is faith more comforting than during times of tribulation, and we are entering those times today.

A very timely reminder of just who is in charge, James.

We’re living the dream James! And thank you for explaining that!

George Bernard Shaw said:

“The fact that a believer is happier than a skeptic is no more to the point than the fact that a drunken man is happier than a sober one.”

Only the mind of a socialist would come up with such a comparison!

You have thoroughly demonstrated how inane his comment was.
