Who We Are #1

Over three decades ago I become interested in the Bible, having drank from the heavenly cup once, I have not been tired to drink more

I have taken this topic from the book of Psalms 82 and the sixth verse which says, “Psa 82:6 I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High.” I want us to see the mind of God for believers as being exposed by the writer in this wonderful book of Psalms. It is no gain saying that many believers do not know who they are in faith and this sickens the mind of God. It is undoubtedly not good when a person fails to know whom he is in a family, anyone who fails to know whom he or she is, the devil will continue to cheat the person. God however does not want that to happen to us thence he has inspired a writer millennia ago to clearly spell out to all who we really are in God.

About Psalms 82 in Brief

This chapter is written by Asaph who was a young man and a Levite in the land of Israel during the days of King David. He wrote twelve Psalms namely, 50, 73 to 83. He was commissioned and prayed for by King David.

In this Psalms, 82, God shows himself as the judge among the mighty people of the world and the “gods”. He therefore establishes judgment among the people and puts man in the same position as he is occupying overseeing and judging all the people of the world.

Disturbingly we discover according to the writer that some people use the position they are occupying wrongly by not judging right.

How long will ye judge unjustly, and accept the persons of the wicked?” (Psa 82:2)

This essentially God is not happy with, as he wants us to judge rightly, defend the poor, the fatherless, the afflicted and the needy in the society.

Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.” (Isa 1:17)

It is for this reason that we have been put into the position but since people, leaders put in that position are not doing as expected God was not happy with that.

Asaph in his words in this chapter is saying that the leaderships and the people in authority of the land, are doing what the Lord does not like despite putting them in the position and he stated in un-equivocal terms what they were doing as beneath.

Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy.

Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the hand of the wicked.

They know not, neither will they understand; they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course.” (Psa 82:3-5)

The position the Lord has put the leaders yea everyone who is in the position of authority all over the world is ensuring that we stand in the position which God will occupy on earth which is ensuring that we judge rightly, save the widow and the fatherless as prophet Moses says of God that, He doth execute the judgment of the fatherless and widow, and loveth the stranger, in giving him food and raiment.” (Deu. 10:18)

Since they are not doing what was expected of them, as one of the Levites and a religious leader, Asaph therefore put the people in remembrance as he is by extension putting us all in remembrance about the position God has placed each and sundry and it is that position that I want to speak on in this article.

Meaning of The Name Asaph

Asaph in Hebrew is “אסף” which when romanticized becomes 'âsâph (phonetic spelling is aw-sawf') which means collector. It worth mentioning that the name Asaph is being bear by three Israelites.

A) Putting Us in Remembrance

It is good to herein say that sometimes we forget some things because of what we are passing through, either good or bad. This equally applies to the fathers of old because they were also humans like us.

When we are passing through good times we can forget our position and who we are, in the same vein when we are passing through hard times we can forget who we are. Let us see some of the things we can be passing through that can make us forget who we are.
