The History of Vampirism dates far beyond the fictional stories from Bram Stoker of Dracula. Written accounts of evil blood-sucking beings have been found in medieval texts, and vampire-like remains have been unearthed at a number of archaeological sites around the world with findings published in scientific journals. There are modern day reports of vampire sightings, and even accounts of people stepping forward and admitting to being a vampire. Vampire-like animals and insects are scientifically known to exist, so is it so far of a stretch to believe that Vampire-like humans are among us as well? The following article outlines popular locations where Vampire sightings have been reported in the real world, followed by tips and tricks on how to improve your chances of finding a Vampire.
Read on to find out where to find a vampire.
Highgate Cemetery, London
Highgate Cemetery is a burial ground in London that dates back to 1839, and was dedicated to burying the dead of elite families. The reason the cemetery was dedicated to London’s elite was due to the exotic landscape design and stunning architecture; 15 acres was dedicated to members of the Church of England and 2 acres was dedicated to people who did not belong to the church. The very first person to be buried in the cemetery was on May 26, 1839, and was a 36 year old woman by the name of Elizabeth Jackson. In 1854, the cemetery gained an additional twenty acres due to economic prosper, and it was connected to the existing acreage by an underground tunnel system. Highgate cemetery boasts elaborate and eccentric architecture, with buildings and catacombs built in a range of styles that include New Classical, Gothic and Tudor. In addition to laying to rest many elite English families next to beautifully haunting above and below ground tomb markers, the cemetery is perhaps most famous as housing the burial plot of philosopher Karl Marx, who died in 1883. The gates to the cemetery closed in 1975 due to bankruptcy, however a society so named ‘The Friends of Highgate Cemetery’ was created in order to preserve the cemetery for those families who maintain grave ownership. Extensive conservation and restoration work has been undergone on the cemetery, and it is currently open as both a functional burial ground and popular tourist destination.
Highgate Cemetery: Then and Now
Exeder, Rhode Island
There were a total of 12 Vampire attacks that date back to the 1800’s in the region surrounding Exeter, Rhode Island. Perhaps the most famous Vampire legend in America is the case of Mercy Brown. A young woman at the peak of life, Mercy Brown died of consumption on January 17, 1892, a time in which the deadly disease claimed the lives of so many. It was particularly common in small rural towns, where medicine and medical help was scarce. The case of Mercy Brown is particularly interesting, as an investigation into her death at the time revealed chilling results. Mercy’s 24 year old brother Edwin also contracted the disease, and on his deathbed claimed to have seen his deceased sister sitting on his chest, drawing him towards death. Rumours around the town also began to spread, with reports from townsfolk having seen Mercy Brown walking through the area. George Brown, the father of the family, with the company of a Doctor from Wickford, examined the corpse of his daughter who had been buried in an above ground temporary grave. He was hoping to disprove the rumours that his daughter was a Vampire. To their horror, not only was his daughter’s body not decomposing, but it appeared to have shifted in the grave and her skin appeared very much alive. In order to confidently ensure her rest, they gave her a proper burial following the removal and burning of her heart. Despite the tendency to disprove this story due to the lack of medical knowledge of the time, people continue to claim to see the form of Mercy Brown wandering around her resting place. Is there truly a Vampire in Exeter, Rhode Island? Many tourists flock their each year to see for themselves.
An eerie amount of evidence has literally been unearthed in Italy that proves what has previously only been believed to be common practice in burying those who were thought to be Vampires. Between the 14th and 18th centuries, the plague swept through much of Europe and was responsible for the death of a huge amount of people. Large burial sites were used to dispose of the dead, and these sites have been of interest to archaeologists today. Recently, remains have been uncovered of skeletons with bricks shoved in their jaws, which was common practice for people who were thought to be Vampires at the time. These bricks were believed to prevent the dead vampires from rising and eating the corpses of the plague-infested human remains that shared their graves. Recent archaeological findings have been located in mainly around Venice. As common practice for human beings to visit their dead family members in a cemetery, perhaps Vampires revisit these grave sites to mourn their buried kin.
Nowhere is Vampire lore more prominent than in Romania. In the small villages throughout the Carpathian mountains of Transylvania, it is common to hear stories of Vampire sightings and attacks, both historical and recent.
New Orleans, Louisiana
New Orleans is a city rich in dark culture, and is often thought of as the capital of voodoo and Vampire culture. People who are interested in Vampire culture seem to flock to the French Quarter, where many bars and hideouts claim to host Vampire patrons. The 'dark arts' in New Orleans date back to plantation slaves, who, in an attempt to hold on to their home culture, would practice voodoo rituals. Over the years, the fear of these practices lead to the common understanding that voodoo is dark, where in fact it originated as an uplifting spiritual practice. In any case, it is not uncommon to see locals and visitors alike moulding into the dark culture that seems to be so fashionable in that area. Whether you're interested in participating in the Vampire culture or simple observing, it is sure that you will find all sorts of interesting sights if you keep your eyes open. After all, what a great place for true Vampires integrate with society where people intentionally try to blend in with them.
In addition to the French Quarter being a likely hideout for Vampires, the above-ground cemeteries throughout the city are understood to be home to a number of Vampires. With reports of sightings a common occurrence, these large city-like cemeteries are a good bet for Vampire seekers. The cemeteries of New Orleans are a site in themselves, as due to the high water table, all grave tombs are located above ground. These tombs great grand avenues of death markers, where one could easily get lost amongst the dead. Be cautious, as you never know what human or undead entity might be lurking in the shadows.
New Orleans has become such a popular destination for Vampire seekers, that there are number of tours you can go on that will help you on your hunt. Click here for more information on Vampire tours of New Orleans.
How to Find a Vampire - Tips and Tricks
- Appear timeless. It is believed that Vampires do not age, and therefore may reflect the time they were born or created through the way the speak, dress or act. Human beings have a tendency to be drawn towards like-minded people when in foreign territory. For example, when travelling another country you may find yourself making friends with another person who is from the same town or country as yourself. If you find yourself somewhere where you believe to be Vampires, you are more likely to spark their interest if you yourself also appear to be of a specific time. Instead of following the current fashions, perhaps make a point of dressing from an earlier time period or wearing vintage jewellery or accessories that may suggest you are not of this era. By disguising yourself as someone who may have something in common with them, you may in fact draw their attention towards you.
- Put Away The Camera. If Vampires truly do exist, there is a reason why their existence is hidden. You are less likely to come in contact with a Vampire if you look as if your aim is to photograph or document them and share it with the public.
- Become A Night Owl. Nearly all accounts of Vampire sightings or attacks happen at night, and for good reason. It is unclear if Vampires are able to go in the sun or if that is just a common fictional stereotype, however any interactions during daylight would bring unnecessary attention to the encounter. If you're serious about trying to find a Vampire, then you're most likely going to need to go hunting after dark.
- Be Careful. This may not be a trick to FIND a Vampire, and it can't be known for certain if they even exist or not, however I must implore you to heed caution if out hunting for a Vampire. If all these reported attacks are in fact true, you should be careful to make sure your hunt doesn't turn you into the hunted.

alucardcount on June 06, 2020:
Immortality in the sense of a human or a vampire would suck. Mentally humans and even Vampires wear out from the daily rituals. Ann Rice wrote about this in her book: "Interview with the Vampire" Eventually even immortality takes it toll except in a spiritual sense like in the Bible. My believe is that in heaven we are life forces or energy that has some sort of intelligence. Enough intelligence to seek out our kindred spirits so in the sense we do indeed meet again in heaven. Not as a body and shape as on earth but an energy that can communicate and sense each other.

I have never met a vampire in my entire life and I really want to become an Immortal vampire for the rest of my life and never go back to being a human being., ever.
Logical thought on July 19, 2019:
I for one would not want to be a vampire.. because the reality is, is that we know nothing about them, only a very few details that were gathered by only a number of sightings. This whole vampire thing could be a disease, it also could be some form of demonic possession, or maybe it could be this raging bloodthirsty animal that just has the same physical features as human. I'm reading all these comments and it's like wow! People are begging to be turned, and some people in these comments were even claiming to be vampires! In real life if there is such thing as vampires our government would step in and prevent any significant evidence from reaching the public eye faster than you can say heaven help me. I heard of a statistic one time, over a hundred bodies in America alone are found without any blood, NO NOT EVEN ONE DROP!!. (Now clearly in such a case cults can be blamed for it, but at the same time you just don't really know). It is arrogant and it is ignorant for me to say that I know what kind of life is in our world what kind of life is not, therefore for me to learn anything I must keep a open mind.

I have always been fascinated by myths & legends, especially vampires.
it would be wonderful to meet one of them (maybe someone has crossed my path ... who knows)
it would certainly be breathtaking to be able to talk to someone from another epoch ... what such a person must have experienced & seen ...

Well I´ve always believed that vampires are real. No, I don´t think they are Twilight style. They are creatures that might seem beautiful, but they are the opposite. I have never seen any, but I know they are real. Ever fact, every article, may have something in common...vampires were known before Christ. I won´t deny it, I would love to meet one, but just to make sure that all those legends are real. I´m fascinated but at the same time, a part of me is dying of fear.

Real or not, why would anyone go willingly looking for trouble? Seriously, lions and Tigers are beautiful animals, but would you willingly walk up to one wearing a meat suit?
I love a good vampire story and movie as much as the next person. The ones that were pre-twilight, vampire diaries, ect that is. If that's your thing, that's great. Not mine, though. Dracula is my all time favorite vampire book and I love the Lost Boys (R.I.P. Corey Haim :-( you are missed!). However, I ain't about to run around and wear a sign that says 'Bite me'. I like me just the way I am, thank you.
Great artical, though. Very cool read.
Unknown on July 13, 2016:
For those of you who have been bitten, find a coven and secure your futer. If humans ever find out you will be in grave danger. Humans only need one common attacker to unite them. That could be immortals. I am warning you, stay away from humans, only hunt them and move on. For my safety I will not say whether I am or an immortal. Thank you for keeping your existence a secret for so long, do not revel yourself now.
For humans, I advice you to stay away from vampires. Vampires are not something that will fall in love with a mortal. They may choose to make you immortal, but it is more likely that they will choose you for a meal. Thank you, for being interested in learning the wonders of the world.

Very interesting.. I love hearing vampire stories .. I'm very curious person but not daring .. I'm sure there are vampires out there.. Vampire comments are right.. Once you are there you can't turn back .. You have to be willing to leave all your love ones behind.. My question is .. Is it a disease they developed and can infect someone else.? How were they created.. We all have questions that maybe we will never get our answers..

I have met one vampire who literally had fangs shoot from his gums but luckily for me a police officer shot at him and he ran off after biting me only briefly , his name was Jordan McDaniel's! He was super cute 16-20 years old (looks like it but not really)! Ever since when I see bright light my head feels like it's going to explode and my teeth have slowly been getting sharper over the entire 3 month period. By the way this was in Transylvania, Romania!

We do not hide from everyone. Most of the time we attack fir the lack of boredom. Twilight ana every ither vampire movie\Show is wrong. Vampires aren't oh bella come save me. We ate more bella run before i kill you. And if you bleed in front of us it doesn't make us all pscho. We can control that. But if you mess with us its more like why don't you just shoot yourself because your as good dead. I have been here for 347 years and earth is weird. Everyone changes. And yes there is a way to turn into a vampire but you need a vampire for that. I wad turned. I hated it. I was gumb and askef for it. My advice to you is not to ask for it. Because as soon as you do there is no going back. You guys know that show the Vampire Diaries? Well little tip Vampires can walk in the sun. We just prefer the night because oeople can hardly see us coming. But one thingis right. We do have to be invited in. I can't believe how many people want to be vampire when they haven't seen the obstacles. Not ageing. Kind of weird. Wanna be a vampire. Look nice when you die.

Koran on July 19, 2015:
Anything is possible, voodoo is real as are witches but we all have seen how people reacted to that when many innocent women were executed due to speculation. People fear what they don't know so why would a vampire risk exposing themselves to encounter hatred and jealousy. We can't even get along as different ethnicities let alone something otherworldly. So, if they are real I wouldn't want to be one nor be a meal or killed by one, but be able to at least know one and keep their secret as well as pass it on to those who would follow in containing it. Unless said vampire is just killing mercilessly.

Person on March 12, 2015:
I'm not going to address any of what has been said on these comments for some of which are pathetic and ridiculous..
I've always been drawn to the thought of the supernatural and their possible existence. I have numerous theorys of my own on how they came to be. I've tried to reaserch the topic for as long as I can remember but to my disappointment, it always brought me back to nothing. I believe anything is possible, including "vampires" as they are referred to as many different names. I have thought of the possibility of inheriting a "vampire gene". Speaking from my own personal fasination with blood and strange unexplained urges I've had, also taking into account of some bizarre things that have happened to me.. Whether it be me having psychotic behavior or tendencies, or a possible gene I inherited that could be awoken or "triggered" by taking a human life or feeding on a human.. I guess I'll never know? I dislike the daytime, I've always felt better, more at ease during the night. I literally salivate at the sight of blood, and my heart races when I can see a pulse onsomeones neck, or feel it. I have this darkness in me that takes over, a hunger that is so difficult to fight. It comes and goes but once it returnes its stronger each time. I'm young and it's scary to think how bad it may get over the years.. I have kept this to myself for years in fear of being placed in a nut house. It's a battle I face everyday of my life. My mother died of unexplained causes at 36 years old. I was informed later on by my father that she had sight. My grandfather can be in two places at once.. my father also has sight, and as do I. I dabbled in Wicca, mostly dark magic.. I could have just picked up a demon for all I know but living this long with it seems unlikely. I age, I have no inhuman abilities. Just a lust that is almost impossible to control. My eyes have glowed, my teeth have extended.. I have had black outs.. it's hard to believe, I know but it is the truth. I am afraid of what I may be or become. I have NEVER spoken of this and I am a little intimidated to share it. It is my deepest darkest secret. This post is anonomys; however, so I think it will be okay? Who knows with the technology and internet? Anyway I do apologize for any gramatical error or misspelling. There is more or course but I think I've said enough already. Goodbye all and blessed be.

kellie on December 26, 2014:
I believe in vampires, however I do not think that any of us will ever meet a vampire. Whether it be Stephanie Meyers twilight or some weirdo legend on the internet they should be treated the same as us humans who try to hunt them down and disrupt their lives. I don't think that a vampire would come out to some weirdo human they don't know about being a vampire, because think of the consequences whether it be twilights power crazed volturi or simply humans ruining their peace and quiet and going and blabbering about it to everyone I don't think it makes sense to tell I mean if I was a vampire I sure wouldn't tell. Again I believe in vampires but the probability of any of us ever meeting a vampire is very slim, so don't get your hopes up, and please don't go out hunting for vampires and painting a bad picture of humans, but what do I know i'm just a kid. Also, I would like to thank you for creating this website for us to learn more about vampires and for us to give our opinions about the topic.

No one will ever know if they are real or not. They could be fake, they could be real. Why would anyone want to put their life in danger just to find that out? I'd love to know for myself, but I don't think I'd risk dying just to know. I live in shitty Akron Ohio, and i'm out by myself quite a lot at night. I think I'm a little more afraid of being raped then I am being attacked by a creature of the night. But nevertheless. if they truly exist, I say lets keep that a secret forever. I'd love to learn more about them, and their history of course. But I'd also like to keep on keepin on.

Some of these stories are pretty intense. Ever since I was a little girl, I've loved vampires. And it makes me mad to see all these girls wanting to date one now? It's kindof annoying to see some girl be like "omg I want a vampire boyfriend" honestly, I find it dumb. These are beautiful dark creatures we are talking about here. Not something out of twilight. (Which in my opinion is quiet dumb). This website has definitely sparked my interest though, good job with the interviews and stuff!!!
