Characteristics of a Godly Person

Rev. Margaret Minnicks is an ordained Bible teacher. She writes many articles that are Bible lessons.

What makes a godly person? What is required for someone to be called “godly”? Here is a good definition along with a few characteristics.

Godly: Definition

First of all, a godly person is someone who loves God and the things of God. That being said, a godly person is someone who is obedient to God and abides by His commandments in order to live a righteous life.

1. A Godly Person Loves God

A godly person is one who loves God with all his heart, body, mind and soul and others as himself. Notice this is two-fold. You must love God and others. You can’t love God without loving what He has created.

You can’t love the Creator without loving His creatures. We are sons and daughters of God Almighty. We are a family. As godly people, we should love others...even our enemies.

2. A Godly Person Loves Others

A godly person treats everyone as part of the family of God. We should be concerned about others... our sisters and brothers in Christ. When they hurt, we hurt. When they have a problem, that problem should become our problem. When they rejoice, we should rejoice with them. When they become successful, we should feel as if we did as well.

There should be no jealousy in the heart of a godly man or woman because God is no respecter of persons. What God has done for your brother or sister, He will do for you... in His own proportion to your obedience to Him.

3. A Godly Person Follows God's Commands

A godly person follows the commands of Matthew 6:33 by seeking first the kingdom of God and His righteousness knowing that all things will be added unto him.

A godly person knows the word of God and shares it often with others. That person uses every “teachable moment” as a golden opportunity to witness about Jesus Christ and the Kingdom of God.

Godly people share what they have learned. Their gift of knowledge never lay dormant. It is renewed over and over as they share it with others. What they share will live on even after they have left this world. Their teaching could be their legacy.

A godly person is one who has high moral standards and is a good example and a role model for others. There is no question about a godly person’s integrity and honesty. His word is his bond. People believe in him because he is dependable. He is not wishy-washy. He can be trusted.

Godly people practice what they preach. They are not one way in public and another way in private. They don't act one way on Sunday morning and another way Monday through Saturday night. They know their reputation is what others think of them, but their character is who they really are.

A godly person sees a need and fills it without finding fault, whining, or complaining. A godly person is part of the solution instead of being part of the problem.

A godly person is part of the solution instead of being part of the problem.

4. A Godly Person Follows Jesus' Examples

A godly person follows the example of Jesus. Throughout the gospels, we read that Jesus had compassion on people because He loved them.

A godly person loves others to the point of putting them first and foremost. A godly person loves the unlovable and people who are different.

5. A Godly People Are Special to God

Why are godly people so special to God? Godly people are so special to God because they live by the commandments of God. They glorify Him and edify others. They let their light shine so that others might see their good work by giving God the credit without trying to make a name for themselves.

God loves godly men and women because they go out of their way to live for Him, to honor Him, to glorify Him, and to praise Him for who He is rather than for what He can do for them.

Keep these things in mind if you are unsure whether you are a godly person or not.

  1. You are godly if and only if you love God with all your heart and you strive to please Him.
  2. You are godly if and only if you follow the examples of Jesus Christ by keeping your face like a flint toward what is good, honest, true, and just.
  3. You are godly if and only if you allow the Holy Spirit to empower you to be led and guided into all truth.

Amen to that.

PoetikalyAnointed, thanks for reading and responding. You are absolutely correct about forgiveness. It is hard to do, but once a person does it, it is so liberating.

PoetikalyAnointed on December 04, 2018:

This was another Blessing to read. The Hardest thing to do as Christians is FORGIVE! It's so Humbling to Forgive those who hurt you, especially if it was done purposely. Forgiving oneself is also a huge struggle. I have been HURT so badly that I Know God allowed the betrayals I've faced. He is the only one that can Heal me from it.

It's all working together for Our Good!

I was reading proverbs 10 this morning and decided to google what makes someone a godly person. This article came up and I'm so glad I found it! Very clear and concise, exactly what I was looking for.
