What the Bible Says About Kindness

Rev. Margaret Minnicks is an ordained Bible teacher. She writes many articles that are Bible lessons.

Kindness Defined

Kindness is the way we treat others when we are nice to them. Being kind is a behavior bestowed on others that makes them feel good.

Kindness is defined as being helpful toward others; especially when they are in need. Being kind means doing things for others without expecting something in return for what you do for others.

Kindness can be summarized as a providing a charitable act for someone else.

God's View of Kindness

God expects people to be kind to others. It is one way of pleasing God. We can't say we love God and mistreat His people.

God is kind. So we should be kind to others as well. Showing kindness to others is imitating God's character. When we show undeserved kindness to others, we are copying God's behavior and doing what Jesus would do. People are instruments through which we can show that we are also kind to God.

Kindness: A Fruit of the Spirit

Being kind to others is a fruit of the Spirit, according to Galatians 5:23. Kindness is more than saying you are kind. It is proving it with action.

There are some interesting things people should know about kindness.

  • Kindness should be followed up with a kind act.
  • Kindness to God's people proves your love for God.
  • When you are kind to others, others will be kind to us. It's a reciprocal factor because kindness begets kindness.

  4. Forgive others even when they hurt you.

  6. Don't manipulate people.
  7. Look down on people only when you are helping them up.
  8. Live and let live by not being so hard on people when they disappoint you.

Genuine Kindness

People respond to God's love by being kind to others. Genuine kindness is a response to God's love. Genuine kindness is not saying we love God and mistreating what God has been made in His own image.

God has commanded us throughout scriptures to be kind to others. Therefore, being kind to people is being obedient to God. We disobey God when we are not kind to others.

When we mistreat others, we destroy our relationship with God. That causes us not to receives all the benefits from God. We might think are love for God is genuine, but if we mistreat His people, we are not loving God to the extent that God wants to be loved and served.
