What does Islam and the quran say about loving your neighbor

Part Four in the what you don't but should know about Islam series.

What Islam Says About Loving Thy Neighbor

"O mankind! Allah created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know each other (not that you despise each other). Verily the most honored of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things)." Nobel Qur'an (49:13)

Many people ask, "How can we live together in peace? What must be done for us to be happy with one another?" And how many other questions must we ask? Every person on the planet would have a say in this. No one person could possibly answer this question alone. We are all in this together, and we are all just about the same. We all live with one another. We all sleep, eat, drink. We all have families that need us. We are all made the same way. We have the same basic makeup. We all need, want, and feel. We all frown, cry, smile, laugh, hate, love. Are we really so different?

But we all come from different cultures. We worship different, talk different, dress different, judge different, and are taught different, but we are all still human. We all still come from the same place and we have the same destination.

The root of most violence, hate, and difference lies in one word. Ignorance. Ignorance of others breeds hate, and discontent with your fellow man. Being close minded and unwilling to learn about others just compound the problem. When a person just takes another persons word about a nation or religion instead of finding out for themselves, this also breeds hate and discontent.Only when a person is willing to break free of this and open his or her mind can we solve this problem. When one seeks knowledge from all available sources and shuts out the propaganda of governments and power hungry groups that harbor hate, our minds begin to open and hate and ignorance slowly begin to fade away. When we travel and see new lands and learn the beauty of the whole world we are then loving all of the Creation and the Creator. As Muslims we should obey God, and live in peace with all of our brothers no matter what their nationality or skin color, or language. No matter what wrongs one people has done to us, we should not hold one responsible for the actions of another. We all came from the same place, Adam and Eve.

The Prophets of God (pbuta) were sent to us as role models. We are supposed to live as much like them as possible. They were humble, tolerant, kind, giving, loving and respectful. They had honor and obeyed God, and all of his rules. They did not hate, and they did not dislike. There were 25 Prophets for us to follow from many tribes and countries, out of these 5 were the most important. Noah(pbuh), Abraham(pbuh), Moses(pbuh), Jesus(pbuh) and Muhammad(pbuh). When we learn to live with just half of the love for man they had, this world will be a new place. As you can see the Prophets of Islam are the same as Christianity and Judaism, so why do we hate each others religion so much. Why are we fighting all the time? Why do we hate each other so much? The Qur'an says this:

"We believe in God, and the revelation given to us, and to Abraham, Ishmai'l, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, and that given to Moses and Jesus, and that given to (all) Prophets form their Lord: We make no difference between on and another of them: And we submit to God." Nobel Qur'an (2:136)

Muslims are required to ask others to read the Qur'an without force of any kind. To invite others to worship our Creator with out associating Him with any other gods. In Surra Al-Imran it says:

"O people of the Book! Come to common terms as between us and you: that we worship none but Allah; that we associate no partners with Him; that we erect not, from among ourselves, lords and patrons other than Allah. If they turn back, Say:"Bear witness that we (at least) are Muslims (bowing to Allah's Will)." Nobel Qur'an (3:64)

If we are to live in peace we have to realize that we are not the best, that we are not "gods gift to the world". We must stop being self centered and egotistic. We have to realize that there are those better than ourselves and many if not all people are better than our self. No man can ever truly know the heart and mind of another, but Allah is most knowing of what men keep in their hearts and minds. So how can we judge another man, when we know not? The true people of God are those who serve only Allah and fear God, and love all people.

"Of the people of the Book are a portion that stand (for the right); they rehearse the Sings of Allah all night long, and they prostrate themselves in adoration. They believe in Allah and the Last Day; They enjoin what is right, and forbid what is wrong; and they hasten (in emulation) in (all) good works: They are in ranks of the righteous. Of the good that they do, nothing will be rejected of them; for Allah knows well those that do right." Nobel Qur'an (3:113-115)

Muslims should be the most loving and understand people of the earth especially to the non-Muslims. Throughout history Muslims have proven they can do this. They have lived in peace with people from almost every nation and religion on the planet and have always lived in peace. There are those who call themselves Muslims and spread hate to trick you, but they are not Muslims. They can not be believers and live such lives. As Allah has said this is wrong therefore they are not what they claim to be. We God-fearing people from all nations should put away petty differences and open talks and promote love and kindness. We must approach each other with our similarities not our differences. We must come with open minds and as much knowledge of the other as we can, and promote talks with every one not just those we chose.

Some steps we must take in order for peace to work are as follows:

- We must first think of what we can do for others, then ask what they can do for us.

-We have to let go of selfishness, and realize that there are other people on this earth, and we are not better than another.

-We must realize that not all people will accept Islam and that we should love them no matter what their religion.

-We must realize that God created many people with many colors, and He did this so we could come together no matter our differences. So we could become stronger for overcoming this. And be better servants to Him.

-We have to realize that even though we are different we have the same goal. And we can work together even if we are different.

-The future will not improve unless we accept the past and forgive on another and learn from it, accept all culture and ways of life.

Scroll to Continue

-We have to realize that no man is better than the other, No nation has the right to Judge another. But God will have His day of Judgment where no man will have power. And no matter what you social status you will bow before Allah, the One, the only One worthy of worship.

-We must realize that all men and women are equal. And the law of man must apply to one just the same as the other. No man is above the law. Allah is the only one above the law. Because He is the Law.

-We must provide help to all people in need. Not just one race or nation. This aid must be given without any conditions. You should never make a man pay a charity back. And a man must not force an unwanted charity onto another.

-Leaders are not born, leadership is earned, through hard work and God-fearing rules. No person is worthy of leadership unless put in place by the people they rule.

-We must realize that the rights we enjoy were not free. Some one had to pay for them. And if you want to enjoy these rights you must realize they are not just something that is given out. They cost blood, sweat, and tears, even if they weren't yours, you should act as if they were and be humble and respect these rights.

-We must realize that military might does not give a nation more rights. People of the entire world should stand against such actions by any nation. Power through fear and strong arming should be shunned and should not be tolerated.

-Change starts with one, at home, in the family. Our charity should be given freely to those who need it. Raise your children to give excess to those in need. Raise them to love your enemy instead of hating them. Teach your children that kind actions reap kind actions, and Bad actions sow more bad actions. The children are the key. Raise them to love, and love they will.

People of the Earth I beg you, Please, for the sake of us all, Stop hating one another. We are all people. We all have feelings. We all love. No matter how we praise God. No matter what color our skin. Stop believing propaganda and learn for yourself. Stop associating the bad of one with the good of the whole. Stop focusing on the bad and remember and encourage the good. The thought of this brings tears to my eyes, my brothers and sisters, Let us love one another.

This blog is dedicated to my butterfly, and All the God-fearing people of this world. May God bless us all no matter where we live or what color we are or what language we speak. May all we do be for the Glory of Allah. And may all we do prosper in his name.

Neighbours are the ones who live around us. In some circumstance they are even closer to us better than our own relative who live far from us. It's nice to read your hub, Pintails...! Keep writing....! on January 04, 2016:

Noallah just like Christian Bible the Qur'an says that for specific battles. It never says to kill them where every you find them. Please show me that verse. If you read those same verses which I doubt you even know which ones in the bible say that, you will see what I am talking about. In fact the Qur'an has thousands of verses that talk about loving your neighbor, same as the bible does. But both include verses about specific battles that suggest to totally destroy that city. I suggest you familiarize your self with the Bible before you hate another religion (a direct violation of what Jesus says) without even knowing the history of your own religion. When you do that come and talk to me, we can have a very productive discussion.

If so loving, why does the Koran say to kill the unbelivers where ever you find them? Why does it say it is okay to lie, steal, rape, etc... from the infidels? So to me, anything a muslim tells me is a lie, & I had better keep an eye on my stuff, & watch my back. Somebody is lying or the Koran is contradictory.

Well Rd I would get a new "teacher" read some of my hubs they should be very helpful. Also I write for an Islamic magazine from time to time, I am more than happy to answer any questions you may have. I have several articles on this site. There are many many great Qur'an search apps for yoru computer and smart phone.

Learning Islam is like learning to swim. You would not jump straight into the ocean on your first day. No you would take it slow and easy and not try to rush yourself. Knowledge will come with time and at your own pace and will. If another is forcing it on you then this is wrong. Again feel free to pm me and I can provide you with my email or you can pm yours to me if you wish to chat. i have several great books for beginners. I got them for free from my Mosque, however I would bet you can find them free online in print or pdf. I would share them with you if I had a way to get them to you. Anyways, I hope you will not give up and may Allah guide you in the right path what ever path that may be. Salam.

I just converted to islam and I'm trying to learn but the person "teaching" me is doing so in a forceful non appealing manner. I'm trying not to slow this to effect my learning and growing experience but every discussion becomes an argument.... This cannot be islam! What should I do

How true your words are Quran. Sad but true. Unfortunately all we can do to fix it is agree that we ourselves will not act in this way. Hopefully we can teach our children the same, and they stick with that belief. Maybe just maybe we rub off on one person that has the will in their heart but just needs a little nudge in the right direction.

Everyone today is only interested in quid pro quo. They do not care what they can do for you at all, they only care what you can do for them. Often times they wont do anything unless they feel they are the one coming out ahead in the deal.

Quran on May 05, 2011:

Yes pintails i agree with you. now in this world people are all mean and they just care for other only if they want some thing in return. true love, affection, care for other are diminishing from the world day by day.

pintails7886 (author) from Memphis TN on March 10, 2011:

Yes Quran tuter, you are correct. But even more so than must share, one should want to share. Not for their benefit but for the benefit of others.

in Quran it have been difiened many time that to pay a special attention to your neighbours, and have to talk with then in nice way,,, even you are eating some thing in your food and they cant, you have to share with them,

Like neighbors we should also respect other religions too. People often think that their religion is the best and others is not good but that is not right. God created Christianity, Jew-ism and Islam and as he created some people white other black, some people rich other poor, in the same manner he created different religions and their followers. The reason he made this discrimination is to check the righteousness in each human being. So please don't think conservatively and make the world a peaceful better place.

usat from Sarawak on October 22, 2010:

Preaching is different than understanding of the holy context. Christian teaching never deviate from the biblical context and so are the muslim. Whatever it is, some of the muslim community are the most sensitive community on earth especially from certain muslim sector from Arab world and Persian Gulf. Why not the other sector like Mindanao, Africa, China. Do they use different teaching? Chinese muslims from China are the best muslim in the world. Their population could be more than the entire middle east Arabs or the Pakistan/Iran combine. Why they have good tolerance of understanding. May be we learn from them. Christian people pray for peace for everybody regardless of religions and races. I dont know if Muslim do the same. What i understand, they portray hatred ideology

Freya Cesare from Borneo Island, Indonesia on February 28, 2010:

Sallam, Brother.

Such a great reminder. You already gather together the standard list of how Muslim genuine heart supposed to be like we all already had been taught by Al Qur'an, but missed from many of Muslim Sight and awareness.

The world will become far from what we have today if this characteristics really become all Muslim characteristics. Sadly, it is not what we have. The game of Satan really hard to beat by many of us. racialism, conceit mind and ignorant existed in our community.

For example, like what happened with Indonesia. My country hold the largest Muslim community in the world for non Arabic language. But for people from Arab they thought that we are the second class Muslim (What?!). Or the never ending disputed between Sunni and Shiah; really hard to understand.

Al Qur'an already put great standard, but ummah seem keep failed to follow it.

I wish there will be many people who have, even if only half of your awareness, and then the world, also our community will become great place to live.

Well done, my Brother. Well done. With this thought in your head become based of your daily acts, you will reach far to the beautiful life here and hereafter, inshaallah. ^_^
