A silent observer looking around. At times he must protect his identity with avatars and weird sounding names.
Years of staying into the realms of the internet taught me one thing. People now has the means to be militant. The internet gave them all the protection they need to shove their beliefs into their hapless victims, all while staying anonymous and in the comforts of their basements. They don’t have to worry about getting grounded and pounded for being mean. And yes, there are times where you need to grow thick skins just to post comments in social media. For anytime soon, these low lives will troll you for the sake of trolling.
The internet and social media seem to make a toddler out of grown men. It seems that being militant is in. Extremism and fanaticism to one’s belief is rampant, that’s why me and my friends agree that stuffs like religion are best discussed outside social media. That will be another topic, but the fact that a mere mention of religious experience, or healthy criticism of religion will likely trigger toxic remarks. Once I noticed that people who shared some insights about their beliefs will be likely attacked, even though they are not seeking debate. And there is one reason why. Fanaticism coming from atheists and Christians. These two sides are like flame and gasoline. They will blow if mixed together. They are volatile bunch, but I tend to notice how these two have many similarities. They might be different, whereas one is a hardcore believer, the other is a raving non-believer. But below are the things that those two fanatics have in common.
Special Mention; Anti Catholic
There is a running gag among our circle of friends that in order to be a fundy, one must become an anti-Catholic first. We joked how members must first express their deepest hate to the Catholic church in whatever form.
It’s just a joke, but with basis.
It seems that any fundamentalist we met online had posts smearing the Catholic religion, calling them names like “idolater,” or “pagan.” According to their interpretations of the scripture, Catholics are damned to hell.
And as for internet atheists, the Catholic church is also their favorite punching bag being hated religion overall. “Pedos,” “delusional,” “corrupt,” are just the few these people could come up with.
Healthy criticisms are welcomed, but these fundies will even resort to fabricated news just to smear the church.
1. Loud and likes to argue
To be straight, these guys are obnoxious. They will tell the world who they are and will announce to everyone their unchallenged status. Worst these guys simply like to argue and prove to anyone that they are always right.
Once a random fundy infiltrated a Catholic page and shouted insults to every believers. The Catholics are celebrating an important tradition, and the jerk wanted everyone to know they are going to hell due to idolatry.
Then when is the last time some faceless internet atheist trolled you for expressing your beliefs online. You are not asking for a debate, but the neckbeard claims how illogical and delusional you are for believing in fairy-tales.
It was a good thing that we got block and report buttons.
2. Closed minded
This is the reason why you should not debate some random fundy online. You are better off talking to a wall, as these guys simply won’t listen. You may present the best evidence, the most reliable sources and the most logical reasoning. But what good are they if the fool won’t listen. Cognitive dissonance run in both sides, both on religious fanatics and Dawkins fanboys. When is the last time hardliner listen to evidence of evolution, while any raving neckbeards will laugh at you if you show them the evidence of the historical Christ?
3. Literal interpretation of the scripture
Many people will agree, that you don’t want to literally interpret the Bible. With its words having deeper meanings, not to mention the ancient culture presented in the Biblical civilization being different from our modern ones, one might end up with wrong interpretations that could lead to social toxicity. Priests, theologians, pastors, and scholars will spend years studying the scripture to get the understandings right before they convey the messages to Sunday masses or services.
And yet we are still wondering why fanatics are fond of the literal interpretation of the Bible, which caused them to deny stuffs like science. Literal interpretation also caused them to isolate themselves from their fellow men, by believing that they are the only ones to be saved. Internet atheists are not helping either. To “debunk” the scriptures, they will cherry-pick certain passages and interpret them literally to “prove” their points. They usually do this when they claim that the Bible is evil.
Ever wondering why, they react violently when you do non-threatening posts. As what’s mentioned before, you post something and never wished to debate, then some random guys will claim your belief is invalid. This is rampant among the two sides. When simple posts never agreed with what they thought was right, they will be up in arms to mob you. To be short, simple stuffs will offend them. Christian fundamentalists will troll anyone they thought is a threat to them. And nowadays saying something religious will offend internet atheists.
5. Poor debater
Extreme beliefs equal to poor logic. The loud and obnoxious voice they displayed means that they really have no idea on what they are doing. That’s why you won’t get good and civilized answers when engaged them into discussions. Christian extremism is rooted in emotions, so expect no effective defense when you challenge them. And yes, internet atheists are also like this. They will claim how their ideas are scientifically sound, but you may find these neckbeards putting up poor reasoning.
The irony is, these guys are the ones who love to argue. And when their defense crumple, you may find yourself in a rather sticky situation.
I like to create a separate article on this, but if you have full belief in your faith, or confidence in your unbelief, then there is no need to be loud. Mere social media OP will never offend you. And the reason for the violent reaction is that beyond the obnoxious facade, these guys are insecure and doubtful in their own beliefs.
With this article going longer than expected, we will just take note some stark similarities between those internet jokes. They are known to display certain levels of bigotry, which was caused by their inflexible doctrines. These groups are also known for their Islamphobia, and their tendency to spread fake news.
To be short, both are nasty human beings.
