What Happens When You Call on the Name of 'Jesus'

Rev. Margaret Minnicks is an ordained Bible teacher. She writes many articles that are Bible lessons.

Jesus did not get His name from His parents or any other family member. Jesus' name did not come from a book of baby names. God bestowed the name of Jesus on His Son before He was conceived, according to Philippians 2:9-11.

When the messenger angel Gabriel visited virgin Mary when she was betrothed to Joseph, he told her several things that confused her at first.

"You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end” (Luke 1:31-33),

Those three verses show several things about the child that Mary would give birth to.

  1. The child would be conceived by the Holy Spirit.
  2. Mary would give birth to a son.
  3. His name would be Jesus.
  4. He would be great and called the Son of the Most High.
  5. He would reign on the throne.
  6. His kingdom will never end.

As a confirmation, Gabriel visited Joseph in a dream and told him the same things he had told Mary. So, it is not strange that when the baby was born there was no discussion about what to name Him or what He would grow up to be.

All of the above statements are true and important. They were bestowed on Jesus before His birth. However, this article focuses on what the name of Jesus reveals and explains why God gave His Son the name Jesus.

Why God Named His Son “Jesus”

The name Jesus is a prayer, a creed, and a confession of who Jesus is and what He accomplishes in us, through us, and for us. Therefore, when you don't know what to pray for or you don't have time to pray when trouble faces you, you can always immediately say one word: "Jesus." Saying that one word is a prayer within itself.

The English name is Jesus, but in Hebrew, it is “Yeshua.” The word “Yeshua” means “Yahweh saves” or “Jehovah is salvation.” Yahweh is Jesus in the flesh who came to save us from our sins. This name transliterated in the Old Testament is “Joshua.”

God wrapped Himself in flesh and became human as He was born through a human. Therefore, the very name of Jesus is a confession of His deity and His saving work. That is why the angel said, “You shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”

Jesus is a name of humility as well as a name of infinite exaltation. Paul tells us that His name is glorified far above every other name.

"Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father" (Philippians 2:9–11; cf. Acts 4:12).

Jesus: Not a Random Name

The name of God's Son is not a random name. Embedded within His name are two goals:

  1. Affirmation that Jesus is our Savior
  2. A reminder that Jesus is God in the flesh

Jesus: A Common Jewish Name

The name of Jesus is a fairly common Jewish name and is still used today. It is not usually used as an English name, but it is very popular among Hispanic, but it has a Spanish pronunciation.

In Jesus' Name: End of Every Prayer

We pray to God but in the name of Jesus. That's why just before saying, "Amen," we say, "In the name of Jesus."

Jesus: A Name and Not a Title

There are about 198 names and titles for Jesus in the Bible. However, "Jesus" is a name and not one of His titles. Sometimes Jesus' name is combined with a title, such as Jesus Christ where Jesus is the name and Christ is the title.

Jesus and others referred to Jesus by title, but the name "Jesus" was given to Him at the time of conception with the angel telling both Mary and Joseph that "He shall be named Jesus." The angel never said His title would be Jesus.

Jesus: A Name Above Every Name

The name Jesus is above every name. There is no name on earth that is above the name of Jesus. There is no situation on earth that is above the name of Jesus. No matter how much we adore and admire famous people including celebrities and authority figures, their names are not above the name of Jesus. Even demons have to bow down at the name of Jesus.

What many people, including Christians, don't realize is that everything has a name. Your illnesses, troubles of every kind, enemies, and everything else has a name that you should put under the name of Jesus because nothing is greater or more powerful.

If you are facing trouble of any kind, put the name of Jesus above it. Then it will have no power. It will wither like a plant in the desert that gets no water in the hot sun. When we pray or call on the name of Jesus, heaven responds.

Calling on the name of Jesus is the key that unlocks any door. It might sound unreal because it is something that is easy to say. It is just one word of only two syllables. Begin practicing saying, "Jesus" right now because there is power in the name of Jesus.
