Are You Ready for a Breakthrough?

Rev. Margaret Minnicks is an ordained Bible teacher. She writes many articles that are Bible lessons.

If you want to see a traditional church go wild, let the minister start preaching about a breakthrough. That's because everyone is looking for a breakthrough these days. However, people just hear the word "breakthrough" and desire it without knowing what it really is or if they are ready to receive one.

Breakthrough: Definition

According to the dictionary, a breakthrough is an act of moving through and even beyond obstacles. It is not uncommon for people to desire a breakthrough if they have been struggling with some issues and seem to be stuck. Therefore, they need to get unstuck to get through what they are going through. They need a break in the cycle. A “breakthrough” is simply the end of some struggle.

There is more than one kind of breakthrough that people desire.

  • A financial breakthrough
  • A health breakthrough
  • A spiritual breakthrough

In order to pray an effective prayer for a breakthrough, one must identify the type of breakthrough he really needs. Then, he must be ready to receive the breakthrough when it happens.

Financial Breakthrough

A financial breakthrough is needed when a person has a problem making ends meet. He can't pay his bills on time and is always struggling because he doesn't have enough money for basic needs for himself and his family. There is usually more month after the money runs out.

A financial breakthrough will help the person with a lack of money to get back on his feet and be relieved of the stress of not having enough for necessities.

Health Breakthrough

A health or wellness breakthrough is needed when a person is sick more than he is well. He needs to break the cycle of having health issues. A breakthrough will make him whole again.

Spiritual Breakthrough

A spiritual breakthrough is what a person experiences when he has reached a new level of spiritual growth. He feels the presence of God rather than feeling that God is missing from his life.

There are several examples of people in the Book of Acts who had a spiritual breakthrough.

  • Paul experienced a spiritual breakthrough on the Damascus Road when he had an encounter with Jesus and was converted (Acts 9). Because of his experience, he preached the gospel for the rest of his life. He went on to write 13 books of the New Testament.
  • Peter experienced a spiritual breakthrough on the rooftop in Joppa when he had a dream and learned that the gospel was for all people, including the Gentiles (Acts 10). For the rest of his life, he lived with that knowledge.
  • Lydia was converted and had a spiritual breakthrough down by the riverside at Philippi after hearing Paul's teachings (Acts 16). She was so inspired by his teachings that she invited him to stay at her house so she could hear more about the saving power of Jesus Christ.

Spiritual breakthroughs are not limited to biblical people. Today, disciples of Christ might seek a spiritual breakthrough when they feel something is blocking them from being in God's presence. A spiritual breakthrough is needed so people can get back to praising and worshiping God on a daily basis.

Be Ready for a Breakthrough

Paul says in 1 Corinthians 3:2, "I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready." In other words, breakthroughs happen when people are ready to receive them.

There is an acceptable time for a breakthrough. The metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a beautiful butterfly is a perfect example. There are certain stages of development that start with the egg, then the larva, the pupa, and then the butterfly. There is no butterfly at the egg stage, the larva stage, or the pupa stage. It is only at the final stage that the butterfly emerges.

Time is needed for a baby to be born. An embryo must go through a gestation period to become a healthy baby. Mothers don't mind being pregnant for nine months until the baby is ready to break through the womb and be born.

In order for any effective breakthrough to take place, the timing must be perfect. You might have prayed for a breakthrough, but God will never allow it until the timing is right and the person is ready for it.

A Disservice

Pastors do a disservice by continuing to promise parishioners automatic breakthroughs without teaching them the dynamics of them. People need to know several things about breakthroughs.

  • The type desired
  • Being ready for one
  • Perfect timing
  • Various stages

People experience a breakthrough when they are ready for one and God is ready to give them one. Breakthroughs are not doled out to people just because the pastor says they will get one.

Yes, Ellison, EXACTLY! Thanks for sharing your comments. Blessings to you!

I think a lot of people misunderstand religion with a view of entitlement. They don't realize we need to thank god every day, and try and live more like Jesus every day, treating others as we would like to be treated, becoming overall better, kinder, more loving people...then you are ready to open your heart and feel close to God and receive that breakthrough you have been wanting

Margaret Minnicks (author) from Richmond, VA on September 28, 2018:

Ellison, yes indeed. It is so unfortunate that people don't realize that being ready is important for receiving a breakthrough.

So true! Everyone wants one, not everyone wants to work to get ready to for one.
