Over three decades ago I become interested in the Bible, having drank from the heavenly cup once, I have not been tired to drink more

In the previous article, I said for in depth understanding of what I want to share here, there is need to explain what preceded the migration of Naomi and her family to another land. this I have started and will continue with in this article.

Some of Those Minute Lights Seen by The Ancients Continues – Ruth a Case Study

The bible is full of many intriguing and interesting stories, which essentially are compiled for all believers to learn from. Let us see more points about the incident Elimelech’s family as recorded in the bible.

(xxxii) Decision Time:

Naomi having discussed at length with them, strongly urging them to return to their land and their people, each person has to take a stand. If they had been lured and or compelled all the while to do what they were doing, it is now time to take decision for themselves.

From the previous explanation about the developments, what was running through their minds when their mother in-law was presenting the lacuna to them we see that their decisions were not the same, they had abinitio been having the same “decision”, but now it becomes clear that each person needs to decide on what to do.

(a) Orpah’s Decision:

What Orpah did is common the in the western culture, when spouses wanted to part from each other they will give each other the last kiss and then leave without looking back. This was what Orpah did, she kissed her mother in-law biding her bye as she left the scene, because according to her she has reasoned or viewed what her mother in-law presented to them beyond what she has said.

And they lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother in law; but Ruth clave unto her. (Rth 1:14)

The Hebrew word for kiss here is “נשׁק” when romanticized it becomes nâshaq (phonetic spelling is naw-shak') which means touch “lightly”. This she did and take her leave of her, not waiting for her second because she does not want her to influence her decision again, she has been influencing her decisions all these while, she does not want that happen again it is time to be free, it is time to take her life in her own hands and do what will give her happiness, it is time she be freed from bondage.

(b) Ruth’s Decision:

Like the westernized culture Ruth too perhaps kissed the mother in-law like her second, Orpah, did. However she took an additional step which her second did not add to hers’ and it was that she cleaved to her mother in-law having known what has ran through her mind in the past few minutes that her mother in-law has been pressurizing them to leave her to her fate and her shame.

And they lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother in law; but Ruth clave unto her. (Rth 1:14)

Hebrew word for cleave here is “דּבק”, when romanticized it becomes dâbaq (phonetic spelling is daw-bak') which means cling, adhere, stick, be joined to etc.

Instead of her lightly touching her mother in-law like her second has done, she cleaved to her.

Many a one too has kissed Christ Jesus after hearing the word and or listening to the message of the cross or reading the message of the gospel as being shared, with the world.

After reading they would love the world but self, and other material things of the world would not make them stick to the message as they would turn back from the message to the world and sin.

(xxxiv) Naomi’s Expectations:

Naomi was expecting perhaps the time she will let her go so that she continues with her lonely journey back home as she believes she last all. She perhaps may have thought that if she were the one that her husband died as their daughters in-law husbands have died, she cannot do more than they have done, she also would turn back.

(xxxv) She Was Surprised:

However she was in for the surprise of her life as the person who cleaved unto her would not let her go, since she remained standing she keeps standing with her, wrapped up with her, feeling each other pulse and heart beats.

In the next article I shall continue with the exegesis.
