Using the Dimmed Light Seen #13

Over three decades ago I become interested in the Bible, having drank from the heavenly cup once, I have not been tired to drink more

I have in the previous article written on someone who though has lost all, for he was equally thrust out of his father’s house, and the world becomes a detestable place for him. Despite all that he has suffered from the hands of his brethren the only thing left for him was his self-confident. It was this that the Lord used to turn around his life positively. I want to continue with the exegesis, showing us another minute thing that could be seen when we have lost all.

Some of Those Minute Lights Seen by The Ancients Continues – Michal and David a Case Study

The author of the book of Ecclesiastes says, there is no new thing under the sun.

The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. (Ecc. 1:9)

Sometimes when we are passing through some situations on earth we would think we are the only one passing through such and in some instances we shall think that such has not been experienced by anyone before, but on walking far, as it is being said in Yoruba adage that when walks far one would see squirrels with hunchbacks (congenital anomalies), one would come across different strange things which abinitio if we have heard of we shall not believe.

Due to this, I therefore want us to see the story of two lovers from the bible, who are in the darkest moments of their lives and the only thing they are sure of is that the partner they are involved with deeply loves them.

5. Love of One’s Partner:

The world cannot be lived in in isolation. We all need one another to successfully live in the world. One of the key thing that keeps us going in the world is love. We have been enjoined to love one another, to love our neighbors as ourselves. (Mat. 19:19)

However, there is a love that is special, and it is the love between opposite sex.

When this kind of love originated in the hearts of matured males and females it grows and becomes a fire that nothing can quench as stated by the author of the Songs of Solomon.

Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned. (SOS 8:7)

It is this kind of growing love in the hearts of lovers that make them say they would like to live together for the rest of their lives, this kind of love leads to marriage.

However, there have been instances when the duo who are in love would be antagonized by some people from coming together as one, husbands and wives. In some other instances, such a partner may be given as a a snare to his or her lover.

When such situation happens to them, they become a shadow of themselves, would not be happy and sometimes it can lead to other forms of diseases like depression.

There are several reasons that can cause this, few of the reasons are what we want to see from the scriptures to show that and there is no new thing under the sun. (Ecc. 1:9b)

(i) Seeing Your Son’s (or Daughter’s) Spouse a Threat:

Michal King Saul’s daughter loved David and the love between them grew such that it could not be hidden from the maiden’s father. However the maiden’s father has always seen David as a threat to the continuation and establishment of his kingdom, therefore he wants him dead at all cost to ensure that his kingdom be established and be handed over to his son. (1 Sam. 20:30-31)

Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said unto him, thou son of the perverse rebellious woman, do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thine own confusion, and unto the confusion of thy mother's nakedness?

For as long as the son of Jesse liveth upon the ground, thou shalt not be established, nor thy kingdom. Wherefore now send and fetch him unto me, for he shall surely die. (1 Sam. 20:30-31)

Since he has seen David as a threat therefore he would not give his first daughter who loved David to him. This was what was in his mind too when he learnt that his other daughter loved David, he does not want him to have her thence he was thinking of what he will do so that he will not have her. Having succeeded in not given his first daughter to him, he thought he will succeed too on the case of Michal and David but the love between them was deep and he couldn’t succeed.

(ii) He Must Have Persuaded Her to no Avail

I perceived that King Saul must have persuaded his daughter that he should crush to death within her the love between her and David, for it will not be immediately that they started eyeing each other that the father would know. Thence, when he gets to know this he persuaded her to leave the man and be married to someone else, an important person in the society.

(iii) Likely to Have Presented the Reason to Her:

He probably would have presented the reason why he wants her to abolish in her heart the love she has for the man as he did for Jonathan his son later.

I will continue with the exegesis in the next article.
